We are thrilled to announce the three talented university students who will join our 2024 Internship Program after receiving the inaugural Denise Hatzi Memoriam Award! Charlotte Chambers (University of Adelaide), Deborah Onofia (Flinders University) and Chelsea Billinger (University of South Australia) will be mentored by one of our female or gender-diverse senior leaders, spend a day work-shadowing a senior leader and have the opportunity to be shortlisted for our Graduate Program, following successful completion of their studies.  Named in honour of the late Denise Hatzi, the Award recognises exceptional women and gender-diverse individuals in civil engineering and provides a career pathway in the public sector. Denise dedicated 23 years of her career as a civil engineer to the Department and will be remembered as an industry trailblazer, who made strides with her advocacy for equal outcomes for people of all genders. Denise’s family were present at the inaugural awards. The real life consequences of collisions and near misses on South Australia's rail network should be everyone’s concern, all year round. During Rail Safety Week this year, we’ve been highlighting some confronting footage of close calls with pedestrians and motorists. The vision also highlights the impact these incidents have on everyone involved, including our train and tram drivers, emergency service workers and the wider community. Already this year, 123 near misses have been reported across Adelaide Metro’s train network, with a further 50 across our tram network. An exciting milestone today for our River Torrens to Darlington Project!

Network upgrades play a crucial role in improving traffic flow for local communities, prioritising safety and accessibility. New traffic lights, along with a signalised pedestrian and cycling crossing, are now fully operational at the Brighton Road and Edwards Street junction at South Brighton. The project includes upgrades to streamline traffic flow and provide better access to local businesses, particularly during peak hours. This project was jointly funded by the Australian and South Australian Governments and supported approximately 20 jobs during construction. Many disabilities are invisible. Contract Manager, Catherine Magraith, who is neurodivergent, is a passionate advocate for people living with invisible disabilities and is a member of our Disability Community of Practice. The Disability Community of Practice is one of six employee-led networks in our Department focused on specific dimensions of diversity. It aims to ensure DIT workplaces are inclusive and accessible for people with intellectual, physical, cognitive, sensory, neurological and psychosocial disabilities. It also aims to ensure our teams benefit from the different perspectives people living with disability can bring. Real life doesn’t rewind ⏪ This week is Rail Safety Week, a time for us to remind all South Australians to always be vigilant and take care around our train and tram network. There have been more than 120 near misses reported across Adelaide’s train network this year, compared to 132 at the same time last year. There have also been 50 near misses recorded across the tram network. Since 2019, there have been more than 582 near misses and 34 collisions, tragically resulting in eleven lives lost. Rail Safety Week is an initiative by the TrackSAFE Foundation. Adelaide Metro is working in collaboration with providers Keolis Downer and Torrens Connect to highlight the importance of rail safety. The State heritage-listed Urrbrae Gatehouse has been successfully relocated to its new home. The 1883-built gatehouse was deconstructed and rebuilt on Claremont Avenue at the University of Adelaide Waite Campus to allow the $61 million Cross and Fullarton Roads intersection upgrade. Our contractor G-Force Building and Consulting used 3D technology to map parts of the building, along with meticulous cleaning and labelling to reconstruct the historic building piece by piece to match the original layout. The project preserved the gatehouse’s historic elements and created a modern extension, designed by DASH Architects, which will ensure the building can be used by generations to come. #heritage #heritagepreservation #rebuild #design #engineering #infrastructure #southaustralia #adelaide

Andrew Excell, DIT's Executive Director, Transport Strategy and Planning, discussed the benefits of Adelaide’s North-South Corridor and provided updates on the progress of the T2D Project at the 2024 SA State Conference of the Australian Property Institute at the Pullman Adelaide on Wednesday, 31st July. He also provided updates on other projects undertaken by the Department, including the SA Freight and Supply Chain Strategy, Northern Adelaide Transport Study, road upgrades for the Mt Barker and Verdun interchanges, as well as the Majors Road Interchange. The $15.4b T2D Project is jointly funded by the Australian and South Australian governments. #infrastructure #southaustralia #adelaide

Critical road safety improvements will be delivered at 13 sites across South Australia, thanks to an $8.9 million investment under the Australian Government's 2024-25 Black Spot program. The program funds safety measures such as traffic signals, roundabouts, safety barriers and shoulder sealing at locations where serious crashes have occurred or are at risk of occurring. So far this year, 37 lives have been lost on South Australian roads. 🛣️ Almost $5 million will go towards projects in regional areas, complementing projects already underway to improve safety on our regional roads. 🚴🏽 $4 million will be used for safety measures in the metropolitan area, funding improvements to intersections and traffic signalling. This includes the installation of a median island with pedestrian and cyclist storage areas on Kensington Road across the intersection with George/Giles Street, Norwood.
