What puts the go into ‘escargot’? 🐌 🛑 Our research team in France under entomologist Dr Valerie Caron recently worked with French Master's student Cédric Kosciolek to look at snail behaviour. We found they like the colour red. But they don’t like garlic. One day this research, with the Grains Research and Development Corporation, could form the basis of strategies farmers could use to attract them (for trapping and removal) and repel them using safe barrier substances. Solving maritime mysteries. ⛴️ On 23 August 1969, the coastal freighter MV Noongah departed Newcastle for Townsville with a cargo of steel and 26 crew. Two nights later, the ship sailed into a storm and was lost beneath the waves, its resting place unknown. Until now. The wreck of MV Noongah has been identified after being tragically lost at sea 55 years ago. The loss of the coastal freighter led to one of the largest searches for survivors in Australian maritime history. The vessel's resting place had remained a mystery, until now. We collected data and vision to help identify the wreck as part of a collaborative project with Heritage NSW, The Sydney Project as well as several members of the public. Like a red rag to a snail. 🐌 Our new research has found pest snail species like red but dislike garlic. Researchers conducted laboratory and field tests on four invasive snail species as part of a $4.6 million Grains Research and Development Corporation national research program. The program is designed to provide Australian grain growers with new tools and management techniques to combat snails, minimise losses and improve market opportunities for affected crops. This milestone highlights the importance of international science collaboration to unlock the potential for groundbreaking advancements on global issues. “This partnership embodies the spirit of cooperation, innovation, and hope to tackle one of the most pressing environmental challenges of our time – plastic waste,” said Amelia Fyfield, our Counsellor Singapore and Director Southeast Asia. The signing event concluded with an impressive pitch session featuring three standout IPPIN alumni teams from Thailand: CIRAC, P S M Plasitech Group and Siegwerk.
