What an incredible start to #SpinQubit6, the 6th International Conference on Spin-Based Quantum Information Processing. The industry is buzzing with the best in quantum research here in Sydney this week. Day 1 featured UNSW Chief Investigators, CQC²T Director and CEO of Silicon Quantum Computing Professor Michelle Simmons and Deputy Director Professor Andrea Morello who led insightful talks during the on-donor qubits session. Our students showcased their research at a vibrant lunchtime poster session, engaging in tailored discussions with over 250 international delegates. This sold-out event made possible by dedicated UNSW volunteers, proudly sponsored by CQC²T and bringing together world-leading researchers in solid-state, spin-based quantum information processing. Exciting news from our Griffith University node. Our researchers have been awarded the prestigious 2023 Paul Ehrenfest Best Paper Award for the most significant paper in the foundations of quantum physics. The winning paper, published in Nature Physics addressed one of the most fundamental questions in physics: 'What is an observer?' The research team, led by Professor Howard Wiseman, (Node Manager), Dr Nora Tischler (Program Manager) and Associate Professor Eric Cavalcanti (external to CQC2T), tackled this concept with a novel approach involving quantum computer technology. “Quantum theory is one of the pillars of modern physics, but the textbook versions of the theory are really about what observers may observe, not about what exists in the world independent of the observer”. According to Centre Chief Investigator Professor Wiseman this research redefines the role of the observer in quantum physics. “This puts the observer at the heart of quantum physics, which is a famous problem.” Congratulations to all the researchers. The Centre is excited to share the latest research from RMIT University’s Associate Professor Alberto Peruzzo's team, advancing the field of photonic integrated circuits. Released this month in Nature, Scientific Reports our researchers have developed a novel tunable directional coupler (TDC). This TDC features a unique tuning mechanism that offers enhanced robustness to fabrication errors and scalability, positioning it as a strong alternative to conventional photonic components. This innovation has significant potential for applications in optical communication systems and quantum information processing. Quantum computing experts conquer an entanglement challenge in silicon chips at CQC2T. A team of Centre researchers has demonstrated a world-first: the quantum entanglement of two electrons, each bound to a different atom of phosphorus, placed inside a silicon quantum computer chip. Published this week in Nature Communications and led by Dr Holly Stemp this work made use of previously demonstrated quantum logic operations to generate entanglement between the two atoms and prove this entanglement with a high degree of confidence for the first time. UNSW Professor Andrea Morello is the research team lead, utilising research collaboration with Sandia National Laboratories. The phosphorus atoms were implanted into the silicon chip by a CQC2T research team at the University of Melbourne led by Program Manager Professor David Jamieson. Congratulations Dr Nora Tischler who is one of eight Queensland women working in STEM who have been recognised as a finalist in the 2024 Queensland Women in STEM Prize. Dr Tischler, Program Manager, Griffith University has been selected from an impressive pool of 75 nominations for her pioneering work involving next-generation technologies through quantum physics and information science. As a finalist, she has demonstrated outstanding commitment, ingenuity, and an unwavering drive to push the boundaries of what is possible. This week CQC2T would like to recognise science teacher Joyce Wu from Blacktown Boys High School for bringing her Year 11 Physics class to UNSW to explore the CQC2T labs and experience university life for the first time. It's fantastic to see teachers 'making science fun' and going the extra mile to ensure their students can see first-hand the possibilities of STEM careers. A special mention to our researchers Hassan Jamal Latief for his debut presentation to the group, with thanks to Justin Brown and Dr Alison Goldingay (Campbell) for delivering outstanding lab tours and Rodrigo Ormeno Cortes for his introduction to the Helium Liquefier. We would also like to recognise UNSW undergraduate student Jenny Tang for joining us to share her insights into her first-year of a quantum engineering degree.
