COX is a multidisciplinary practice with studios in Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide and Auckland.

About us

COX acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of the land and waters of Australia. Our practice is built around designers that collaborate with clients, stakeholders and communities. We are By the Many, For the Many. COX seeks to do more with less, tapping into resourceful Australian culture to build value through ingenuity. We strive for quality through our beliefs in equality and opportunity. We embed culture in our designs, taking time to listen and understand cultural context and social impacts. We continuously seek the brightest minds to innovate design, process, and typology. We welcome collaboration, from both traditional and disruptive sources, should it have the potential to contribute to better design. Our history in Australian architecture began with the transformative Tocal Agricultural College in New South Wales. Epitomising the renowned Sydney School, the project had a deep and sensitive understanding of context and place, blended with honest and expressive structure and craft. This has informed the work of COX since. This history has established key principles we continue to prioritise today. One being the planning of cities and design of buildings that are adaptable to change – cultural, social, technological, and economic. The other is the creation of sustainable spaces – environmental strategies that are embedded, rather than added, to our designs. Today we work across Australasia and the globe on projects of international significance. Our team brings experience and enthusiasm to every new project and client. Our projects demonstrate a dedication to research as well as an ability to work with clients to deliver successful design solutions on time and budget. What we bring to our work transcends design. Our innovative technology and structural design solutions place emphasis and value on the design of core elements. Our structures designed as destinations to bring people together to share experiences that are unique to their time and place

The urgency to decarbonise the built environment has put timber, a renewable and low-carbon construction material, in the spotlight. At COX, we're committed to cutting the carbon footprint of our projects by 50% by 2030, with timber being key to this effort. To support this goal, we recently hosted the 2024 Timber Hackathon—a two-day event that brought our experts together with industry leaders to advance the use of timber in architecture and construction. The Hackathon emphasised the importance of early collaboration and interdisciplinary teamwork to fully unlock the benefits of timber construction. Through presentations, workshops, and site tours, participants gained valuable insights, covering aspects like acoustics, fire safety, component standardisation, species selection, and material movement in timber applications. To read more about the Timber Hackathon, visit: https://lnkd.in/g_t-6xRv Day one, hosted at Sculptform, centered on the Macquarie Point Stadium in Hobart. On day two, the team visited Wurriki Nyal (Greater Geelong City Council Civic Centre) to experience the advantages of hybrid timber construction first-hand. We extend our gratitude to attendees, including representatives from Theca, Australian Sustainable Hardwoods (ASH), Rothoblaas, binderholz group, Arup, AECOM and schlaich bergermann partner sbp .

Market Way at 100 Franklin St is the new landmark development for Journal Student Living, nestled within Melbourne’s revitalised Queen Victoria Market precinct. Through stitching together a network of urban laneways and proposed green boulevard as part of COX’s master plan, the 38-level tower creates an active vertical student community atop a new southern gateway to the market precinct. “The tower’s articulated facade and laneway buildings draw inspiration from the market’s heritage fabric through materiality, structure and texture,” explains COX Senior Associate Johannes Lupolo-Chan. “A series of crafted masonry buildings along an expanded Blender laneway offer active retail edges, with wellness and entertainment spaces located above for resident use.” COX has retained the four-storey heritage Burbank House which has been adapted to house all the building’s unique common spaces, connected through a central atrium and vertical circulation net-work designed to foster a safe and welcoming building community. Now in its 16th year, the Restaurant & Bar Design Awards celebrate the world’s most imaginative food and beverage spaces, along with the visionary designers who bring them to life. Among 18 categories, the lighting category spotlights the artful use of decorative and architectural lighting. COX’s design for Poetica in North Sydney has earned a spot on this year’s shortlist. Poetica is where food, art, and place converge—a bar and grill that delights both the palate and the senses, drawing inspiration from the rich heritage of North Sydney. Floating above diners, delicate pendants add a touch of artistic whimsy to the raw, natural design, paying homage to local legends Brett Whiteley and William Blue. These lights transform Poetica from a bright, airy brasserie by day to a moody, intimate venue by night. ETYMON PROJECTS Read more: https://lnkd.in/gTJvznu5

Recently, Global Design Director Sacha Coles had the pleasure of presenting at Cox Architecture, alongside Jess Scully and Sophie Tatlow, where they explored the powerful influence of nature in our built spaces and the role of landscape design in shaping vibrant communities. Bringing the outside in by integrating natural elements into our built environments is essential for fostering a deeper connection with nature. This approach not only enhances our living spaces but also positively impacts our well-being and strengthens community connections. The discussion highlighted the vital role that biophilia plays across all areas of design, from large-scale public realms to its impact on textile design, emphasising that whether large or small, the integration of nature is key to creating spaces that resonate with people and the environment. A big thank you to COX for hosting such a generous and meaningful evening.

The reimagined Nicholas Hall is coming to life in the Wesley Place precinct, one of Melbourne’s largest and most beloved urban renewal projects.     During construction, an unexpected discovery was made – Nicholas Hall was constructed directly abutting the original 1888 Conference Hall. Designed to cut costs, the north wall of the earlier building was used as a party wall to create the south side of Nicholas Hall in the 1930s.    Abode Restoration has been painstakingly working on the restoration, which included taking plaster moulds of the original gothic windows and reproducing in pressed cement. Minicon Construction has recently removed the scaffolding to reveal the intricate facade beneath.     When complete early next year, Nicholas Hall will be a boutique workplace with more public green spaces to enjoy at Wesley Place.  Discover more: https://lnkd.in/gkZeuAqJ Lovell Chen Charter Hall

When you think of an Australian school, do you picture a traditional single or double-storey building sprawled across a large flat block of land in suburbia? Perhaps. But this archetype is being redefined with the rise of vertical schools. They already exist across the country, including the COX-designed Fortitude Valley State Secondary College and Adelaide Botanic High School (completed in collaboration with DesignInc Adelaide) - and we may be seeing more of them. Recently, the Adelaide Botanic High School expansion opened, also designed by COX, increasing its capacity by 700 students to keep up with demand.
