Clean Up Australia supports and advocates for the right to repair in Australia. Repairability ensures products can remain in use for as long as possible –keeping them out of landfill! It’s an essential component in Australia’s journey to become more circular. As proud members of the Australian Repair Network, we were honoured to attend the Australian Repair Roundtable last week, which was organised and run by the incredible Leanne Wiseman and team. The Roundtable included discussion and presentations from a wide range of stakeholders seeking to elevate repair and develop legislative and policy changes that enhance repairability. We were blown away to hear from David Warren, Head of International Relations in the Welsh government, who explained that Wales’ culture of repair cafés has been instrumental in the country’s progress toward a circular economy. Wales maintains a waste-to-landfill rate of only 1.3%! We’re all about elevating repairability and a culture of repair within Australia. We would like to say a huge congratulations to our avid Clean Up supporter Jessica Fox OAM who won the gold medal in the Canoe Slalom K1 final at the Paris Olympics! Jessica also carried the flag for Australia at the opening ceremony. You are a superstar, and we are all very proud! ✨

Clean Up Australia is proud to support local community-run campaign ‘Save our Sydney Harbour’. The campaign calls on the NSW Government to remove decaying wharves, jetties, abandoned vessels and other junk from the harbour water, to protect marine life from toxic pollutants and return the harbour to full and sustainable ecological health. In 1989, Clean Up Australia Founder Ian Kiernan AO initiated an incredible Clean Up of Sydney Harbour, which saw 40,000 residents rally to remove litter and junk from the big, blue bay. Now is the time to continue that legacy! The ‘Save Our Sydney Harbour’ campaign has united communities north and south of the harbour, including Berrys Bay, Snails Bay and the Waterfront Action Group. The campaign is also supported by local MPs Kobi Shetty MP and Felicity Wilson MP, and mayors Clover Moore AO and Darcy Byrne. 20,000 signatures are required to ensure the petition is debated before the NSW Legislative Assembly. Did you know that 1.8 million mattresses are disposed of in Australia each year? If placed end-to-end, they would stretch from Darwin to Hobart. The Australian Bedding Stewardship Council (ABSC) is working to keep as many mattresses out of landfill as possible. Key initiatives include: Building a national network of ethical mattress recyclers. Working on solutions for recovered materials – such as identifying uses for shredded foams and fabrics. Connecting mattress recyclers with mattress retailers, councils, and consumers. Designing a fully recyclable bed base. Collaborating with Remote OpShop Project to develop a fit-for-purpose mattress for First Nations people living in remote communities.
