Catch.com.au buying assistant Rhiannon (Rhi) lived an active life and enjoyed dancing both as a hobby and competitively until she experienced a loss of feeling in her legs in 2019.    While originally attributing it to an intensive gym workout, the numbness later extended to her waist and down to her feet, sparking a series of tests and hospital visits for the then 22 year old.   With her results revealing an active lesion on her spinal cord, she was sadly diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), a chronic disease that affects the central nervous system.   “I was energetic and did dancing for 17 years so it came completely out of the blue,” she says. “I didn’t know much about MS before this and often thought it only came about in older people, so I was surprised to learn it was common for women in their 20s and 30s to be diagnosed.”    Rhi started her treatment program last year where she now receives infusions every six months. The process kills off the B-cells in her immune system so that the effects stop multiplying, but it isn’t without other side effects.    “I’ve had three treatments so far and it’s been a big adjustment as my body struggles. One of the side effects that I’ve experienced is migraines and I’ve been hospitalised for vertigo.”   “I also struggle with heat sensitivity. Being overheated slows down the messages passing along nerves which have already been damaged. This causes my old symptoms to return which is the tingling and numbness in my legs. I have needed to scale back being active and have suffered what’s called MS Fatigue.”    Rhi says she is grateful that her MS was caught early and the challenges have been made easier knowing she has a supportive team environment at work.    “Catch has been very supportive especially when I’ve needed to take time off or work from home if my immune system is low. It’s been so important in helping my body get back on track after treatment and especially as there are days I’m in pain even if I might look okay on the outside.” To support people just like Rhi and hopefully find a cure, Catch’s charity of choice for August and September this year, was MS Australia. Catch shoppers generously donated over $30,000 to MS Australia as part of the round up function, with all the donations to go directly to the foundation.  #MSAustralia #CSR
