Representatives from Spark, Capella Capital and Major Roads Projects Victoria joined workers at the North East Link site in Watsonia as the finishing touches are now being putting on the Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs). A traditional Aboriginal smoking ceremony was carried out to mark the occasion, and the TBM was blessed by a local priest. In keeping with long-held traditions on tunnelling projects, work at the site has been overseen by Saint Barbara, the patron saint of tunnellers and miners. The 200-metre long launch box is now complete and both cutterheads for the TBMs have been lowered into place. The 90-metre long TBMs which weigh 4,000 tonnes each will start their 6.5km journey from Watsonia to Bulleen in the coming weeks.

North East Link milestone as TBMs begin assembly In a huge milestone for the North East Link project, the first segments of the two tunnel boring machines have been lowered into place at the project’s Watsonia site. The first piece lowered was a segment of the shield, closely followed by one of the three huge gantry pieces.   Crews are now progressively lowering the rest of the pieces with tunnelling on track to start in the middle of the year. Once they are fully assembled, the two 90-metre long TBMs will begin their 6.5km journey towards Bulleen and the tunnelling crew will install tunnel walls made of nearly 43,000 individual concrete segments coming from Benalla. The tunnels package of Victoria’s largest road project will create more than 8,000 jobs with more than 3,500 workers across the five project locations already. https://lnkd.in/gPTJUPu6

Capella Capital makes big inroads to renewables sector with NT RAAF Defence solar farm announcement.    Capella Capital was the bid leader and equity investor on behalf of Lendlease to Assure Energy, which entered into agreements with the Department of Defence in April 2019 to design, construct, operate and finance two solar farms at RAAF Darwin and Robertson Barracks in the Northern Territory.   The Assure Energy consortium was supported by Lendlease’s energy and technology team to provide an integrated EPC delivery solution across the microgrid, bringing together solar and battery technologies.   Assistant Minister for Defence, Matt Thistlethwaite, said it will save about $130,000 a year for the RAAF base in electricity costs. “It’s a 3.2-megawatt system, 9,000 solar panels, and that will provide about 40 per cent of the base’s energy needs.”   Managing Director of Capella Capital, Malcolm Macintyre said a project of this nature goes to the heart of what public and private sector collaboration can achieve in the renewables industry.    “We are incredibly proud to have achieved this important milestone working in partnership with Defence, Lendlease, industry partners and the whole supply chain – in particular those First Nations and Territory subcontractors.” https://lnkd.in/gzMzADwt

It’s been a big year for Spark on the North East Link, building Victoria’s longest road tunnels to fix the ‘missing link’ in Melbourne’s freeway network.   Works are continuing in Watsonia as we finish digging out the 40 metre launch box area for the tunnel boring machines (TBM), ahead of tunnelling starting next year. The TBM pieces have started arriving and are currently being assembled, including one of the biggest cutterheads in the southern hemisphere measuring 15.6 metres in diameter and weighing 14 tonnes. Nearly 8,000 concrete tunnel segments have been precast at a purpose-built facility in Benalla supporting local jobs in regional Victoria. Work is also progressing at the Lower Plenty interchange site as we build the large foundation walls that will form the new on and off ramps to the North East Link tunnels in Yallambie. In Manningham, we’ve completed demolition and earthworks and relocated underground services to prepare for the next stage of tunnelling works to construct the Manningham interchange ramps. Earlier this month we achieved a significant milestone diverting Bulleen Road so we can now start building the Yarra Link green bridge and tunnel entrance. A crew of more than 200 people worked during the 10-day closure, laying more than 8,000 tonnes of asphalt.  See the progress we’re making - https://lnkd.in/gAkDMb34

The team might prefer to spend the whole conference at the beach, but your senior leaders have to do some 'update' presentations...how should you approach this? Keep them SHORT! Whatever time you think the presentations need - try to halve it. For most senior leaders, presenting isn't their day job, so the longer it is, the greater the risk of disengagement. Yet, shorter time limits also help them focus on developing an important leadership skill: clear and concise messaging. Congrats to the leaders at Capella Capital who did this last week - very well. And then went to the beach! Congrats to organisers Malcolm Macintyre Jessica Devine and Talia Rea for making it happen!
