When Canberra Hospital’s new Critical Services Building (CSB) opens its doors on Saturday 17 August, it will mark an important day for Canberrans and ACT healthcare. Delivered with construction partner Multiplex, the CSB — also known as Building 5 — ushers in a new era as Australia’s first all-electric hospital building. Powered by 100% renewable energy, its emissions impact is reduced by approximately 1,886 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year (the equivalent of taking 780 cars from Canberra’s roads every year). Prioritising healing and connection, the CSB links into the existing campus via a generous Welcome Hall and outdoor terraces and courtyards – all co-designed with the community. These public spaces are enhanced with site-specific works celebrating Canberra’s culture and Country by locally based artists, including Hannah Quinlivan, Kate Vassallo, and Musonga Mbogo, as well as Ngunnawal, Wiradjuri, and Kamilaroi artist Lynnice Church and Ngunnawal artist Bradley Mapiva Brown. “We’re thrilled that this first build in our major expansion of Canberra Hospital will unite healthcare and community in an environmentally-friendly wellbeing-oriented campus.” — Principal Julian Ashton. Canberra Hospital Expansion is the largest healthcare infrastructure project undertaken by the ACT Government to date. It will support the Territory’s growing health needs now and in the future. “The opening of the Critical Services Building is a huge milestone for the ACT public health system and our community. It will help to meet the growing health needs of our city, attract health workers to the ACT, and provide staff, patients and families with a light and pleasant environment to work and heal.” — ACT Minister for Health Rachel Stephen-Smith Find out more about this important sustainable healthcare project: https://lnkd.in/gyH475wc Client: Canberra Health Services and Canberra Hospital Foundation Construction: Multiplex Art Curation: Creative Road Art Projects Photography: Tom Roe

Topped out! In a major project milestone, BVN and Hutchinson Builders are celebrating the topping out of Green Square Public School and Community Centre. BVN won the design excellence competition for a ‘revolutionary’ new primary school and multipurpose community space in Sydney’s Green Square and it’s great to see the building taking shape.    BVN and Hutchies were joined by Sydney independent Lord Mayor Clover Moore AO and representatives from the City of Sydney and School Infrastructure NSW (SINSW). When realised, the building will be SINSW’s first operational zero-carbon school. And, true to our initial competition proposal, the games court, accessible to the entire Green Square community, will feature one of Sydney's largest public artworks, currently being created by Archibald Prize winner Blak Douglas. The project is one piece in the urban renewal jigsaw that is seeing Sydney’s oldest industrial heartland transformed into a vibrant and sustainable community. The school is part of the NSW Government’s plan to rebuild public education and ensure growing communities get access to a world class public education. As well as advancing teaching and learning spaces, our design connects into the neighbourhood, its open spaces and amenities including the Gunyama Park Aquatic and Recreation Centre and nearby Green Square Library and Plaza.   Construction is on track for completion in 2025.

Applications Open: BVN Projects Manager. Some of us simply see a building. You see the resolution of complexity into clarity and understand the dedication and collaboration required to pull it off. If you are committed to design, detail and the contribution each project makes – to people, place and the planet – we have a role for you. The Projects Manager is an exciting new role in our projects stream—a new business service and ‘Centre of Excellence’ that supports the Projects Director and actively develops project leadership capability across our practice. As an agile expert adept at building rapport and trust, you’ll thrive on more than a project delivery. You will oversee the health of our project teams and assess gaps in project leadership and management, bringing a new level of technical purview and knowledge sharing between our global studios. We know it takes many talents to be a successful project leader. Projects stop and start more than they once did, and the construction sector is much more volatile. BVN is realistic about this scenario. We are committed to and invested in the continuous learning that our project leaders and teams need to succeed in this context. Together, we’ll continue to foster BVN’s culture of collaboration, mentorship, and care for staff development and wellbeing, ensuring our teams have the support and resources they need to excel. The future of learning looks bright, especially when viewed from the ‘versatile verandahs’ of St Patrick's College, Strathfield’s Scientia Building that has been honoured with the William E Kemp Award for Educational Architecture at the Australian Institute of Architects NSW Chapter Awards held on Friday 28 June 2024.   “As well as providing a new front door to the historic campus, the Scientia Building celebrates student-centred learning environments, the importance of community and the site’s natural and physical features,” said co-CEO and Principal Ali Bounds on accepting the award.   Scientia takes an outside-in approach to reimagining education opportunities where open air spaces blur the line between formal and informal learning and teaching. BVN has been commended for advancing a ‘design ethos that prioritises flexibility and adaptability, catering to diverse educational needs and future uses’. “Emphasising the importance of outdoor education, the Scientia Building features numerous outdoor learning areas, further enriching the educational experience. A unified facade treatment with folded sunshading elements enhances the building's aesthetics and maximises transparency. The design optimises access to daylight, fresh air, and views, enhancing the classroom atmosphere and overall learning experience.” – The AIA NSW Awards Jury citation.   Thanks to the Institute, jury, and our project team, client, and collaborators.  The Educational Architecture category is proudly supported by Bondor.
