Partnering with Property Council of Australia, we were delighted to bring some of our industry's leading policymakers and advocates together in one of Sydney's most successful adaptive reuse buildings at Sub Station No. 164, to discuss how we can transform our vacant office towers into dynamic spaces for living, learning and creativity. Our panel experts, including Built's own Jono Cottee and City of Sydney's Graham Jahn, discussed how they will navigate the planning and regulatory complexities of adaptive reuse and the opportunities to harness architectural ingenuity into the future. "Our goal in the property sector should be to create sustainable and vibrant cities that serve the needs of our community. There needs to be some flexibility in the regulation around adaptive reuse to allow for more of these projects." The installation of our tower crane at TM@TRI (Translational Manufacturing@Translational Research Institute Australia) marks an important milestone in Australia’s first scale-up biomedical manufacturing facility for maturing, high-potential, biotech start-ups. Proudly funded by the Queensland Government and Translational Research Institute Australia, TM@TRI is being developed in response to market demand and aspiration from tenant start-ups outgrowing the original TRI while remaining in its supportive environment and continuing their commercialisation journey. TM@TRI will add 6,484m2 Gross Floor Area to TRI’s 38,390m2 GFA, making this the largest end-to-end translational research hub of its kind in Australia. TM@TRI will be operated by TRI and will leverage the research strengths and clinical synergies of its four shareholder partners: Queensland Health, The University of Queensland, the Queensland University of Technology, and Mater Research. Recently launched at Green Building Day, our latest guide “How to write a Building Disassembly Plan” aids to move the needle on the building industry and the development industry, taking on board the importance of designing our buildings not for demolition, but for disassembly. “So that we can bank components and kits of parts of materials that we use to assemble buildings, not just for the first life but for many lives into the future.” Joe Karten, Head of Sustainability and Social Impact, Built. Working with Coreo, Australia’s leading circular economy consultancy, we take this concept from theory to practice across all key economic sectors. “Both Coreo and Built care deeply about translating circularity into practice, and have brought together learnings from individual projects. We wanted to see change at pace and at scale and this paper was the perfect opportunity to do that.” Ashleigh Morris (GAICD), CEO & Co-Founder, Coreo. Working with DOMA, contributing sustainable design and smart construction, we were thrilled to uplift Green Star ratings at 42 Honeysuckle Drive Newcastle. Recently achieving practical completion, this mixed-use vertical precinct combines DOMA's award-winning Little National Hotels, and a commercial tower which is targeting both Green Star and a 5.5 Star NABERS Energy rating. Consisting of a Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) and Glue Laminated Timber (GLT) mass timber structure, the timber structure showcases exposed ceiling services allowing for the timber ceilings, beams and columns to shine through. 5,750m2 of commercial space is spread across the eight-level building with car parking, café space and end-of-trip facilities in the shared podium. The Little National Hotel includes 181 hotel rooms, a lounge, library, meeting rooms and gym. Andrew Phillips #thenewwayforward #newcastle #sustainability #development #construction #clt #glt

“Design for Disassembly is a technique that entails designing structures so that its materials and components can be dismantled in a non-destructive way in the future so that it can be reused, sold, recycled or donated.” Filomena Beshara, Sustainability Manager, Built. Aiding in the solution to several current challenges, it reduces the carbon footprint associated with manufacturing new construction products, minimises the impact on nature and the need for virgin materials, and productivity. “The construction industry represents a large part of all the waste that gets created in Australia, therefore Design for Disassembly becomes a crucial tool for us to become a more circular economy.” That's why, Built and Coreo have created “How to write a Building Disassembly Plan”. Find out more and start planning for a greener future now. https://lnkd.in/gQhMrp-Z Joe Karten Filomena Beshara Ashleigh Morris (GAICD) Cameron Kaufman #designfordisassembly #dfd #sustainableconstruction #sustainablebuilding #greenbuilding #circulareconomoy #circularaustralia #circularity #thenewwayforward

As we celebrated the opening of Machine Hall as the new home of #Vivid Music, we’re proud to have delivered on the City of Sydney’s vision to create a unique cultural space that contributes much-needed affordable infrastructure to the city centre. Giving new life to a former liquor warehouse and substation, Machine Hall’s transformation represents a new cultural partnership with government and sets a benchmark for how underutilised buildings are reactivated for the future. “What we love about this [project] is that you are giving the building its second or third life and the fabric is much richer than a new building. It has a story of the history of what came before it,” Jono Cottee, Development Director, Built. Now Sydney’s newest arts and cultural precinct, Machine Hall is the destination for diverse, dynamic, and visionary music this Vivid Sydney. Congratulations to our Victorian team for winning two awards at Property Council Victoria’s 2024 People in Property Awards. Alun Welsh, Digital Engineering Manager, was the recipient of the ‘Tech in Property’ Award. Alun won this award for his digital-first approach, building 3D Virtual Reality (VR) prototypes for Sunshine Private Hospital and Latrobe Regional Hospital Stage 3A projects. This fostered improved collaboration among project stakeholders, expedited design approvals, championed sustainability best practices and saved time and money for our clients. Our Latrobe Regional Hospital Stage 3A project team were the winners of the ‘Regional Team of the Year’ Award. The delivery team relocated from Melbourne to Traralgon for the two-year project. To optimise delivery and address supply chain disruption, the team developed an early planning strategy to manage procurement and lead times, where they achieved a 30% local labour rate.
