Congratulations to our Western Australian team for winning three awards at the Master Builders Association of Western Australia 2024 Excellence in Construction Awards. Our Waterfront Cottesloe – Stage 1BC project for Curtin Heritage Living received the award for Best Historic Restoration or Renovation. The project delivered 56 Independent Living Units for the community, and we leveraged a careful approach to programming and sequencing to manage labour shortages and supply chains. “A huge congratulations to all involved. The dedication, hard work, and commitment to quality has been crucial to the success of these projects,” said Shane Palfrey, Construction Manager, Built. Our Westralia Square 2 project also won the award for Best Office Building. As the decarbonisation of the built environment remains a key focus for our industry, we proudly joined Deputy Premier and Treasurer Hon. Rita Saffioti MLA, GDI Property Group, and Arup to officially open Perth’s first hybrid timber office tower, Westralia Square 2. “As a builder, we play a critical role in linking our clients and their sustainability aspirations and the materials that bring these to life,” said Jon Stone, Director, WA, Built. “With an embodied carbon saving of about 70% compared to a concrete equivalent building, WS2 sets a new standard for sustainable commercial developments and exemplifies the opportunities adaptive reuse and hybrid timber construction present in reducing embodied carbon,” added Jon. Partnering with Property Council of Australia, we were delighted to bring some of our industry's leading policymakers and advocates together in one of Sydney's most successful adaptive reuse buildings at Sub Station No. 164, to discuss how we can transform our vacant office towers into dynamic spaces for living, learning and creativity. Our panel experts, including Built's own Jono Cottee and City of Sydney's Graham Jahn, discussed how they will navigate the planning and regulatory complexities of adaptive reuse and the opportunities to harness architectural ingenuity into the future. "Our goal in the property sector should be to create sustainable and vibrant cities that serve the needs of our community. There needs to be some flexibility in the regulation around adaptive reuse to allow for more of these projects." The installation of our tower crane at TM@TRI (Translational Manufacturing@Translational Research Institute Australia) marks an important milestone in Australia’s first scale-up biomedical manufacturing facility for maturing, high-potential, biotech start-ups. Proudly funded by the Queensland Government and Translational Research Institute Australia, TM@TRI is being developed in response to market demand and aspiration from tenant start-ups outgrowing the original TRI while remaining in its supportive environment and continuing their commercialisation journey. TM@TRI will add 6,484m2 Gross Floor Area to TRI’s 38,390m2 GFA, making this the largest end-to-end translational research hub of its kind in Australia. TM@TRI will be operated by TRI and will leverage the research strengths and clinical synergies of its four shareholder partners: Queensland Health, The University of Queensland, the Queensland University of Technology, and Mater Research. Recently launched at Green Building Day, our latest guide “How to write a Building Disassembly Plan” aids to move the needle on the building industry and the development industry, taking on board the importance of designing our buildings not for demolition, but for disassembly. “So that we can bank components and kits of parts of materials that we use to assemble buildings, not just for the first life but for many lives into the future.” Joe Karten, Head of Sustainability and Social Impact, Built. Working with Coreo, Australia’s leading circular economy consultancy, we take this concept from theory to practice across all key economic sectors. “Both Coreo and Built care deeply about translating circularity into practice, and have brought together learnings from individual projects. We wanted to see change at pace and at scale and this paper was the perfect opportunity to do that.” Ashleigh Morris (GAICD), CEO & Co-Founder, Coreo.
