Vision is one of the most complex functions in the human body and is possible thanks to many systems and processes working in concert - from the clarity of the eye's front to the millions of photoreceptors at the back of the eye. In this explainer published in The Age, Professor Robyn Guymer AM, Associate Professor Penny Allen and Associate Professor Lauren Ayton go through the remarkable systems behind the eye, what can go wrong and how our research is finding new and better ways to make sure people can see throughout their entire lives. Thanks to Jackson Graham for speaking to us for this thorough, enlightening explainer.

One of the things that makes BV a unique investor, is our staff and their varied fields of expertise. Our Space Lead Eva Rodriguez Rodriguez recently returned from the 17th Australian Space Forum and shares her thoughts and learnings below.
Investing for Impact | Space for Earth | Superstar of STEM | Innovation | Strategy | Diversity and Inclusion (D&I)
Back to Earth after a couple of back-to-back days in "Space", and what a ride the 17th Australian Space Forum has been! Thrilled to be part of two panels, in two days full of talks and meetings focused on building a Resilient Space sector and Sustainability. Thank you The Andy Thomas Space Foundation and Peter Nikoloff and Darcey Watson for coordination and opportunity. Now that I've landed, the highlights - and snapshots! - from me: 💹 🛰 Space economics and investment: I got to give my view on the opportunities to invest in the Space sector, forecasted to grow to $1.8tn by 2035, how to get capital at the right time and the importance of return on positive impact on-Earth and off-Earth. VC continues to be a leading source of funding and Space is an enabler - touching all sectors. At Breakthrough Victoria we see this in our portfolio where companies such as: Infleqtion or Quantum Brilliance - working in quantum tech, sensing and computing; World View - stratospheric remote sensing and exploration; or Liquid Instruments - reconfigurable software-defined test instrumentation, are developing technologies and solutions set to play a key role in and for Space and related supply chains. At the same time, in the (downstream) Applications or Reach space companies such as Smart Paddock are leveraging global positioning and navigation to provide farmers with real-time data and location of livestock, and on farm asset monitoring. Terrific to share this session and discussion with fellow panelists Kate Ramsay GAICD, MBA, Imelda Alexopoulos, Jun Qu, Dr. Vinod Kumar, FIE, FIETE and expertly moderated by Tim Parsons. 🌏 ⚙ Moderating the R&D panel and having a first-hand opportunity to hear Samuel Forbes talk about AROSE Trailblazer, Ben Sorensen on ELO 2, Matthew Gilliham ARC on Plants for Space, Nick Carter and Simon Meik on the AquaWatch mission and Herve ASTIER talk about Neumann Space and their journey to R&D commercialisation. 🙋♀️ Meeting, greeting and reconnecting with: Katherine Bennell-Pegg, Australia’s first female astronaut and first person to train as an astronaut under the Australian flag. I met Katherine many years ago when we both were at European Space Agency - ESA, what an inspiration to hear her insights from the past two years, a true STEM role model and I cannot wait to see her fly! Catherine Roberts AO, CSC, Australia’s first head of Space Command, a trailblazer and inspiration, including in her role supporting the #SuperstarsofSTEM (note: alongside great Superstars Crystal Forrester and Dr Bianca Capra) Finally colleagues at iLAuNCH Trailblazer and SmartSat CRC, both kicking goals. It really felt like home. A small glimpse of the Forum. A lot happening, and a lot more to do. Let's get to work! PS. The "Kanga-naut" or "Astro-roo" pic as requirement to as a minimum elicit some laughs amongst the little ones and hopefully some curiosity #SuperstarofSTEM, the Space Nails on the plane home… too cool not to share.
