Just like the rest of the Beacon Legal team, Senior Consultant, Charlotte Turnbull, has significant experience in guiding candidates through interviews. Charlotte has put together 5 key interview tips for lawyers that, surprisingly, have nothing to do with CVs or reading the job description... “What deserves a mention first and foremost is your handshake - No one wants to grab a limp fish. First impressions and the general impression you leave through your body language, interpersonal skills and general presentation 100% matter in interviews. How much? Put simply, it's the difference between you being perceived as just a "technically strong" candidate and an exceptional stand-out candidate that Partners would be confident to put in front of clients and assist with managing their team. Obviously, firms are going to prefer and be more incentivised to bring on a well-rounded candidate who presents well interpersonally, and this can influence the $$ figure offered as well. Remember the 7/38/55 rule = only 7% of communication is verbal, 38% is through tone of voice, whereas 55% is non-verbal through body language.    ...   Keep the following points in mind to maximise your interpersonal presentation:    1️⃣ CONFIDENT HANDSHAKES & GREETINGS  Offer a firm handshake and a warm smile upon greeting, balancing professionalism and warmth. Something as simple as the strength of your handshake can significantly influence a first impression. As noted, don't have a hand like a limp fish. 2️⃣ CONFIDENT POSTURE & EYE CONTACT  Stand or sit tall with your shoulders back. This gives you a more powerful and assured presence from the get go. Also maintain steady eye contact with the Partners/Interviewers to convey confidence and engagement. Looking around the room can make you come across in-genuine and lacking in confidence. 3️⃣ ACTIVE LISTENING & RESPONSIVE GESTURES  Show you're attentive by nodding and using affirming phrases, and mirroring the interviewer's body language to establish rapport. You want to appear animated, energised and engaged. 4️⃣ PROFESSIONAL DEMEANOUR & NON-VERBAL CUES  Keep a composed facial expression, controlled hand movements, and a calm demeanour throughout. If you're nervous, make sure you're not speaking too fast. Remember to slow down. 5️⃣ APPROPRIATE PROXIMITY & SPATIAL AWARENESS  Respect personal space, maintain a comfortable distance, and be mindful of spatial boundaries. By mastering these body language cues, you can leave a positive impression on Partners and interviewers generally and enhance your chances of securing the role and maximising your salary.” Get in touch with Charlotte Turnbull to give you the best shot at landing your dream role.

We took a little break but... Beacon Legal is back on the slopes in 2024!   We’re delighted to be partnering with LAWSKI Inc. as silver sponsors at this year’s annual lawyers’ ski event!    The three-day spectacle will see hundreds of lawyers put their skills to the test in a series of social events, a day of competitive skiing and snowboarding, a black-tie presentation dinner, and, of course, the “Whiteout” on-mountain après party.   See you on the slopes on the 5th-8th of September!⛷️👋
