Today, we celebrated NAIDOC Week and the launch of our Marrageil Strategy – Supporting Aboriginal Self-Determination. On Monday 15 July, Banyule City Council unanimously endorsed the Marrageil Strategy, meaning "Powerful" in Woi-wurrung, marking a significant milestone. At our NAIDOC Week event, keynote speaker Jason Mifsud, a proud Kirrae, Peek, and Tjab Whurrong man, encouraged us to maintain momentum in our reconciliation efforts. This strategy builds on our 2009 Statement of Commitment to Indigenous Australians and subsequent plans. Developing the strategy involved extensive collaboration with First Nations community members through the RAP Advisory Committee, Barrbunin Beek Aboriginal Gathering Place and the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Corporation. We would also like to thank community members who participated in surveys and information sessions to support us to explore trends and opportunities to develop objectives, commitments and outcomes that are relevant to our community. Learn more about our commitment and the Marrageil Strategy at https://lnkd.in/gt3h8QxW

Supporting NAIDOC Week 🖤💛❤️ NAIDOC Week is a time for celebrating, reflecting, and learning from First Nations people across Australia. At Banyule, we are committed to building a more inclusive and connected community by acknowledging our history and embracing reconciliation with First Nations peoples. This year, we offered employees access to cultural awareness training, educating them on Indigenous culture, history, and identity. This training empowers our employees to become allies, support Indigenous communities, and ensure our workplace and community projects are culturally respectful. In December 2022, Banyule City Council endorsed the Uluru Statement from the Heart, reaffirming our commitment to reconciliation. To find out more, visit https://lnkd.in/gGcf9-ee This year's NAIDOC Week theme is 'Keep the fire burning! Blak, loud and proud'. To learn about the theme and find out how you can get involved, visit www.naidoc.org.au #NAIDOC #NAIDOCWEEK #NAIDOC2024 #KeepTheFireBurning #BlakLoudandProud

Last week, we hosted our first music bingo night at Jaga Jaga Bar in Greensborough! 🎉 The $5 ticket fee covered entry and was donated to the Banyule Community Fund, supporting local charities, particularly in high-need areas like Emergency Relief, Homelessness, Mental Health, and Food Insecurity. We raised $858 in one night! That's enough for 650 food parcels for vulnerable families in Banyule through BANSIC in Heidelberg West. Banyule Community Development Fund Officer Catherine Corbett said, “The music bingo, live entertainment, and pizza were a huge hit. People sang along, laughed, and enjoyed each other’s company while supporting important causes.” Stay tuned for more exciting events! #CommunitySupport #BanyuleCommunityFund #FunWithPurpose

👋 Meet Miles, a Year 10 student doing work experience at Banyule City Council.   Miles spent this week with the Communications team, learning about how local government operates and the importance of keeping staff and the community informed. Miles visited the Waste and Parks Depot, where he observed the team surveying outdoor staff and helped make a video about a new internal program. He also took photos at Malahang Reserve for the Banyule Banner. Miles loves skateboarding and works part-time at a skate shop, so he was especially interested in the skate park. When asked about his experience, Miles said, "I had fun getting in the car, taking photos and editing them. It was cool to see what the comms team does." Thanks for joining us, Miles, and best of luck with the rest of Year 10! #workexperience #studentplacement #localgovernment

Today, Banyule City Council hosted a special event for Men's Health Week. Phil Cleary, a former football player and independent Australian MP, was the keynote speaker. He shared the tragic story of his sister's murder and how he dedicated his life to campaigning to stop violence against women. He emphasised the importance of resilience, treating others well, and sticking together as a community. This event provided a great opportunity for employees to learn about preventative measures and healthy habits that can improve overall wellbeing for men. #menshealthweek #wellbeing #health #mentalhealth
