The ABSC is excited to recognise International Repair Day, October 19th as part of our strategic pillar – “Reuse”. At the Australian Bedding Stewardship Council (ABSC), we stand behind the Right to Repair movement and are committed to extending the life of mattresses through safe, effective reuse and refurbishment processes. By focusing on sanitation and repair, we can contribute to a more sustainable, circular economy in Australia’s bedding industry. Here’s how we’re taking action: 1️ - We’re developing ways to reuse discarded mattresses that aren’t at end-of-life, promoting product longevity through thorough sanitation and refurbishment processes. 2️ - In collaboration with our industry partner, Remuve, we’re exploring the use of TGA-approved UV light technology to sanitize mattress surfaces safely. We're also planning a trial of this innovative solution with Remote OpShop Project in the Northern Territory to sanitize donated mattresses for redistribution. 3️ - We’re expanding our network of ethical, responsible recyclers to ensure that refurbishment practices are safe and effective, reducing improper repairs and promoting quality in reuse. ABSC is excited to be at the forefront of these initiatives. We invite our members to drive tangible change in our sector and work together to make mattress repair and reuse a reality. Are you part of the bedding industry? Not a member of the ABSC yet? Join here. About us
End-of-life mattresses are a growing problem in Australia. Placed end-to-end they would stretch from Darwin to the tip of Tasmania . Many of them end up in landfill and some even on our streets. The Australian Bedding Stewardship Council (ABSC) is a not-for-profit, industry partnership established to tackle this problem. We are a product stewardship program that aims to get mattresses and bedding out of landfill and off our streets to be recycled. We work with supply chain, manufacturers, retailers and recyclers to move towards a circular economy for mattresses. The ABSC partners with key stakeholders to improve recycling outcomes for bedding products from start to end of life. Mattresses cause significant issues in landfill, taking up valuable space, breaking down slowly and burying non-renewable resources. There is also a consistent problem of illegal dumping by the community because mattresses are a bulky, heavy item that is difficult to dispose of. All this leads to unsafe landfills, unsightly kerbsides and unnecessary carbon emissions [or resource loss]. The ABSC is the answer. We’re working on solutions that make recycling easy for consumers, so they can share the responsibility for their used mattress. We work with supply chain and manufacturers to utilise inputs that work towards a circular economy for mattresses and bedding. We engage with retailers to encourage recycling at the time of purchase. Finally, we work with mattress recyclers to maximise diversion outcomes, research new recycling opportunities and create sustainable jobs.

This Christmas, the ABSC is supporting Remote Opshop Project’s Christmas Giving Campaign. Join us in spreading joy and making a lasting impact in remote First Nations communities across Australia. Many of these communities are located 300-800 km from the nearest town, often only accessible by dirt roads that are closed during the wet season. This makes it especially difficult for families to access essential goods at Christmas, and your gift will make a real difference. Over the past five years, this appeal has helped Remote Opshop Project connect with these communities, providing tailored support and spreading holiday cheer. How it Works. - Choose a Gift: Select a gift, and Remote Opshop Project will purchase it on your behalf, tailored to the specific needs of the community. - Direct Impact: The Remote Opshop Project will deliver your gift directly to a remote community, ensuring it reaches those who need it most. - 100% Tax Deductible: Your gift is tax-deductible, making it not only generous but also rewarding. While Remote Opshop provides gift suggestions, the actual items may vary as they customise them based on each community's unique needs. Help spread joy and provide essential goods to families who face the greatest challenges, especially during the Christmas season. A bit of Friday fun. Introducing Our Product Stewardship Myth Busters Series! There’s some confusion around product stewardship, and we’re here to clear things up. Over the coming months, we’ll be tackling common myths and highlighting the real impact of effective stewardship practices. Get ready for some valuable insights! Let’s kick off with Myth #1: "Recycling = Product Stewardship" 🚫 Busted! While recycling plays an essential role, it's just one piece of the puzzle. True product stewardship goes beyond recycling to encompass the entire lifecycle of a product, ensuring that it’s designed, used, and managed responsibly at every stage. Recycling is a step in the right direction, but it's not the full solution. To achieve a circular economy, we need to think about materials, reuse, and more sustainable systems across the value chain. Stay tuned for more myth-busting insights! #ABSC #ProductStewardship #CircularEconomy #Sustainability #MythBusters #EcoFriendly #WasteReduction

Why Circular Economies Are Essential for Our Future In a world facing escalating environmental challenges, the traditional "take-make-dispose" economic model is no longer sustainable. It’s time we rethink how we design, produce, and consume products—and that’s where the circular economy comes in. A circular economy isn’t just about recycling; it’s about fundamentally transforming our entire approach to production and consumption. It’s about creating systems where waste is designed out, materials are kept in use for as long as possible, and products are regenerated into new ones. Here’s why circular economies are crucial: 1. Reducing Environmental Impact: Circular economies minimise waste and pollution by keeping products and materials in use. This reduces the strain on natural resources and lessens the environmental footprint of our industries. 2. Boosting Economic Resilience: By designing products to be reused, remanufactured, and recycled, businesses can reduce dependence on volatile raw material markets. This not only supports sustainability but also strengthens economic resilience. 3. Driving Innovation: The shift to a circular economy encourages innovation in product design, manufacturing processes, and business models. It challenges companies to think creatively about how to deliver value while minimising waste. 4. Creating New Opportunities: Circular economies open up new avenues for job creation and economic growth. From recycling and remanufacturing to the sharing economy, the potential for new business models is vast. 5. Meeting Consumer Demand: Today’s consumers are increasingly aware of the environmental impact of their purchases. A circular economy aligns with their values, offering products that are not only high-quality but also sustainable. The transition to a circular economy is not just an option—it’s a necessity. As leaders, we have a responsibility to drive this change, to rethink how our industries operate, and to create a future where sustainability and prosperity go hand in hand. What are your thoughts on circular economies? #ABSC#ProductStewardship #MattressRecycling #ReduceLandfill #CircularEconomy #Rethink #Reuse #Redesign #Recycle
