Did you know that around 40% of women in Nepal give birth without the help of a skilled birth attendant? Research shows that having a skilled attendant during delivery is one of the key interventions for reducing maternal mortality. Australian Himalayan Foundation's health programs in Nepal are primarily focused on improving maternal and child health care and access - ensuring a brighter future for families in remote communities. Jangmoo Sherpa and her partner, Lakpa Thering Sherpa, founded Action For Nepal in 2016 after recognising how people in rural communities of Nepal were suffering due to lack of basic healthcare. Already a qualified medical doctor, Jangmoo gave up her position as Chief Medical Doctor in Charge at a medical practice in Kathmandu and headed to remote villages. “I could see there were so many people coming to the hospital, walking for two or three days. There was obviously a need for basic health services in these remote communities.” Jangmoo is happy to say that their work is making a big difference. “In the past women delivered babies at home because there was no health centre. In developing countries people accept that women dying during childbirth is a very normal thing - but it should not be. Having a new life is something we should celebrate.” Thanks to the work of Action For Nepal supported by the Australian Himalayan Foundation, we have made significant improvements to maternal and child health in remote communities in Nepal. #health #nepal #maternalhealth #himalaya

Last October, our education partner REED NEPAL went on a field visit to five schools in rural Khaptad Channa in Far West Nepal to assess the post-earthquake damage to the schools and identify immediate needs. They decided to construct Temporary Learning Centres to minimise disruption to students education and provide a quick solution to the need for safe school buildings. In the construction of these Temporary Learning Centres they used local materials, and involved local labourers, builders and community members in the process, fostering community engagement and a sense of ownership. The photos of these Temporary Learning Centres underscore the importance of taking immediate action while also paving the way for sustainable, long-term educational solutions. #nepal #earthquake #education #schools

In Nepal, 72% of girls do not complete upper secondary education. For communities to prosper, we can’t leave half of the population behind. AHF is working to provide a quality education for girls from disadvantaged backgrounds in Nepal. Find out why and how this makes a difference through the words of women in Nepal: https://lnkd.in/gThHS35Y #education #girls #femaleempowerment #nepal

Nirmala is affectionately known as "Nirmala Sister" in Waku village. Born and raised in Waku, she completed her schooling and dedicated herself to community service by becoming an Auxiliary Nurse Midwife. She is now in charge of the Waku Health Post. Nirmala takes immense pride in the health improvements achieved in her village. She recalls a time when the absence of a birthing centre in Waku, leading to a high rate of home deliveries with limited options for intervention. Learn how our Solukhumbu Women’s Health Project in partnership with Action For Nepal has helped ensure the health and safety of local mothers and babies: https://lnkd.in/gYnr3N8E This project is funded by generous Australian Himalayan Foundation donors and Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade through the Australian NGO Cooperation Program. #ANCP #health #nepal #maternalhealth

AHF Supporter Spotlight: Sinora Tamang “In 2017, I moved from Darjeeling, India to Sydney to pursue a Master's degree in Education, specialising in Special & Inclusive Education. During my studies, I sought opportunities to volunteer with NGOs that focused on the Himalayan region, aligning with my community connections and expertise. I discovered the Australian Himalayan Foundation and was deeply inspired by their projects and how they resonated with my passions and background. I began my journey with AHF as a volunteer in 2017, gradually taking on the role of a pro-bono Disability Inclusion Advisor. Additionally, I served as a Safeguarding Officer, dedicating my efforts to ensuring inclusive and safe educational environments. Working closely with the AHF team in Sydney and in various Himalayan regions, I contributed to initiatives in inclusive education and safeguarding. It has been an incredibly fulfilling experience to witness the positive impact of our work on communities, providing quality education, healthcare and environmental protection. I would like to extend my gratitude to the AHF team and all the supporters. Your unwavering support has been instrumental in improving the lives of our community members, fostering a brighter and more inclusive future for all.” #education #himalaya #volunteer

The Australian Himalayan Foundation Himalayan Art Award was established in 2008 to celebrate and promote the rich cultural heritage of the Himalaya. It provides support to emerging artists throughout the region who may otherwise lack the resources to explore their talents. This award offers financial support for one year, enabling an artist to create a body of work that will be exhibited at the Siddhartha Art Gallery in Kathmandu at the end of the year. The artist retains the profits from sales, empowering them economically and artistically. We are currently getting ready to select our 2024 recipient of the AHF Himalayan Art Award.
