As an Ambassador for Equality In Energy Transitions, I am thrilled to promote this opportunity to recognise the valuable contribution of women working at all levels across the energy sector in areas including industry, academia, advocacy, NGOs, government, and research. Nominations are open until 1 August 2024, 11:45 PM EDT and will be accepted from individuals, associations, universities, industry, professional societies, organizations (non-profits and for profits), and any other entities working in the energy sector.

There are huge benefits that will come with the effective integration of CER including - a reduction in overall system costs, improved reliability, and the delivery of a secure, low-emission energy supply for all consumers. As we see more households adopting technologies like solar panels and batteries, it's crucial that our electricity pricing, products, and services evolve to meet changing consumer needs. This review will enable the Commission to take a fresh look at how we can deliver the best outcomes for all consumers across the electricity supply chain, regardless of whether they have CER at home – providing them with the right products and services, as well as clear information, choice, and the appropriate protections.

This rule change is a key component of a broader reform package aimed at integrating CER into the wholesale electricity market, enabling energy, security, and reliability services to be provided more efficiently. Improved visibility will lead to more efficient generation use, lower system costs, and potentially reduced energy prices for all consumers. It's a win-win that doesn't require changing behaviour, just enabling smarter market operation. And over time, this integration will also reduce the need for large scale generation and storage infrastructure, ultimately decreasing costs and emissions for all consumers.

''By integrating Virtual Power Plants and similar resources, we're not just enhancing market efficiency; we're empowering consumers and paving the way for a more sustainable energy future.'' - Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC) Chair Anna Collyer on our draft determination, released today, proposing Virtual Power Plants (VPPs) be allowed to compete directly with large-scale generators in the energy market, to the benefit of all consumers through significant cost savings, lower emissions, and reduced energy prices. The Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC) has initiated a broad, forward-looking review to address the important role that electricity pricing, products, and services will play in supporting the diverse needs of customers, including delivering the consumer energy resources (CER) necessary for the energy transition.  The review will examine: 👉 how markets and regulatory frameworks can provide the products and services that best match consumer preferences, now and into the future 👉 the role of distribution networks in enabling the right products, services, and incentives for consumers, and the efficient cost and pricing outcomes that result 👉 the role of retailers and energy service providers in effectively packaging and pricing electricity products and services to match consumer preferences.    More: https://bit.ly/4fiV04h

AEMC staff recently presented at the Economic Society of Australia's annual conference to share the latest research and findings on economics-related topics:       💡Andrew Pirie and Ashwin Raj presented on Facilitating the delivery of critical transmission infrastructure in the NEM. 💡Howard Zhang and Dan Condon presented on Reliability standard design for the Australian energy market in the energy transition. “We are taking down barriers and getting the regulatory settings right for the next phase of the transition.”   Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC) commissioner Tim Jordan spoke in a session on ‘a renewables-ready market’ at the 2024 Australian Clean Energy Summit today. He talked about some of the challenges of the mid-transition stage, recent modelling of reliability risk in a weather-dependent system, and the future design of the electricity market. #ACES2024

If you ever feel the world's energy transformation is taking a personal toll, you're not alone. We are all managing in a revolutionary environment that is changing at an extraordinary pace and scale. Today at the Australian Clean Energy Summit 2024, I spoke with a wonderful panel of energy professionals about their experiences of wellbeing over the past few years, and how that has affected their work, families and personal lives. We discussed the importance of wellbeing for leaders, remembering to 'put on your oxygen mask first' so you can deliver the support your colleagues and families need from you. It was a moving and inspiring session and I thank Kane Thornton, Rachel Watson, Andy McCarthy and panel sponsor Matt Rebbeck for their candour, vulnerability and humour as we navigated this important topic. Your empathetic approaches and practical suggestions were much appreciated and will help more conversations like this happen in our sector. #aces2024

I’m looking forward to chairing a session next week on a topic I think is really important to us all. I’ll take a break from talking energy market reform and facilitate a wonderful panel discussing the role of leaders in the energy transition, and how they look after themselves so they can look after others, and we can work on this enormous complex transformation together.
