Being named the Cameron Baird VC MG Award for Most Outstanding Soldier is an incredible achievement. Earning that title after turning around a tough childhood is remarkable. Private Jaylahn Hearn is keen to share his story. In two short years he’s gone from the Brisbane Youth Detention Centre, to gaining his Year 10 equivalency, to joining the Indigenous Pre-Recruit Program and marching out from 1st Recruit Training Battalion, Kapooka. On a visit to the Brisbane Youth Education and Training Centre, Indigenous Specialist Recruitment Team members, Army Warrant Officer Class One Serge Pirard and Air Force Corporal Karla Sewell-Blacklock, discussed the possibility of a career in the ADF, and two former Army corporals-turned-youth detention workers. As WO1 Pirard says “I'm so passionate about this kid because 26 years ago someone took a chance on me – I saw myself in him.” Read PTE Hearn’s inspiring story 📰 https://lnkd.in/gDiPjFvU #GoodSoldiering #NAIDOCWEEK24

Our North West Mobile Force, or NORFORCE, patrols the top end of our nation. Private Buddy Worrigal grew up around remote areas of regional Western Australia, and his father did a short stint with NORFORCE when he was a kid. To PTE Worrigal, his dad’s stories sounded “cool like something out of the action movies.” After a chance meeting with a former Regimental Sergeant Major, PTE Worrigal drove himself to the nearest troop and enlisted. Now he’s a proud member of NORFORCE. “Army and NORFORCE are doing incredible work and upskilling the soldiers . . . doing the community proud, serving country on country and I’m honoured to be part of this organisation and continue to serve.” NORFORCE is an excellent opportunity for someone seeking adventure, mateship and learning new skills as I have learnt so much in my time. I feel I have purpose and feel part of something big. Being indigenous I haven’t had much to do with my culture or learning the traditions as we travelled a lot during my childhood. The soldiers from the top end and in my squadron are very knowledgeable in this area . . . they share that knowledge and are like family, I am privileged to serve with them.” #GoodSoldiering #NAIDOCWEEK24

Mastering the art of the boom 💥 🎓 A higher education into the science of things that go bang is now available in Australia to nominated ADF personnel, APS staff and approved Defence contractors. The Master of Explosive Ordnance degree is being offered at ADFA, run by the University of New South Wales in Canberra. It’s the first degree of its kind in Australia. Some would call it an explosive education... 🗞️ https://lnkd.in/gbVJfNVs 📸 SGT Matthew Bickerton
