Asif Sultani, UNHCR High Profile Supporter and a former refugee living in the NSW Hunter region, spoke to NBN Newcastle News about his emotional reunion with his mother. ❤️ Asif has shared a clip of the reunion on social media, which has captured the attention of more than a million people, including the band Coldplay. Patil grew up in Aleppo, Syria, a city ravaged by war. As a refuge from the conflict, Patil would play the piano, which acted as her “little window of hope.” She always dreamed of playing Chopin’s Grand Valse Brillante in front of a large audience. That dream recently came true at an Australia for UNHCR event.

Mariia and her children Anastasiia and Kyrylo are Ukrainian refugees who now call Sydney home. In this video (voiced by Anastasiia), the family shares their treasured recipe for traditional Ukrainian syrnyky, ricotta pancakes. “The food reminds us of being together as a family in Ukraine. We’d eat it together on weekends with my husband, who is still in Ukraine fighting in the war,” Mariia said.
