NEW SECTOR ANALYSIS | AAMRI has analysed NHMRC's 2023 grant outcomes across Investigator Grants, Ideas Grants, Synergy Grants and Clinical Trials and Cohort Studies. Why, and what did we find about our medical research institutes? Grant outcomes for medical research institutes are often not visible in publicly available data, as their grant successes are usually attributed to Organisations administering their grants, such as an affiliated university. AAMRI conducted its own analysis of the medical research institute sector. We found: 🏢 Funded rates for our sector in 2023 were higher than the average funded rate of all sectors. 🔬 Our researchers were awarded between 45-54% of all grants. 💰 In dollar amounts, this was $382.8 million across the four funding schemes, representing over half (50.7%) of total funding available. 👩🔬 Women in our sector had lower funded rates in 2023 compared to men for Investigator and Ideas Grants, but not Synergy Grants. 👨🔬 Looking at Investigator Grants only, women in our sector received almost $13 million more in 2023 compared to 2021. Men, received almost $40 million less in 2023 compared to 2021. AAMRI welcomes the opportunity to provide input to the NHMRC’s draft Good Institutional Practice Guide - we strongly support the importance of promoting an institutional culture that supports the conduct of high-quality research. While the draft guide provides a good overview of approaches to fostering a positive research culture, to enable medical research institutes to continue to deliver high-quality, impactful research, consideration needs to be given to funding the full costs of research and the development of tools and resources that can be shared throughout the sector. 📣 A turning point in unifying funding for Aus health and medical research. We welcome news that our two major funding bodies NHMRC & MRFF will work together under a new structure. What does this means for our sector? For our world-leading medical research institutes, better aligned funding will mean reduced grant duplication and administrative burden, as well as more sustainable and rewarding careers for our talented researchers. Our granting systems have needed reform. Now, collaboration between NHMRC and MRFF funding bodies represents a step forward in creating a cohesive and strategic approach to how medical research is supported and carried out in Australia. "We look forward to this new era of improved funding approaches and working with Government to play our part in shaping a sustainable and integrated system to secure the future for Australian medical research," says AAMRI CEO, Dr Saraid Billiards. We are delighted by today's announcement of better coordination between #NHMRC's Medical Research Endowment Account and #MRFF through a new advisory structure. AAMRI has long advocated for strategic alignment of our two major research funds to unify our health and medical research system, support our essential workforce and deliver better return on research investment and capabilities. We look forward to supporting and being part of next steps in this new era of positive reform. Watch this space. National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC)
NHMRC, in harmony with the MRFF, are pleased to announce the establishment of a new advisory committee structure to address Australia’s pressing health and medical challenges. NHMRC Council and the MRFF’s Australian Medical Research Advisory Board will work strategically together to provide advice on our national health and medical research landscape, while a range of other advisory committees will further support both NHMRC and the Department of Health and Aged Care. “This is a significant step forward in our shared mission to address pressing health challenges and this collaborative approach leverages our combined expertise to drive innovation and improve health outcomes for all Australians" said NHMRC CEO Professor Steve Wesselingh on this announcement. AAMRI welcomes the appointment of the inaugural Board of the Australian Research Council announced today by Jason Clare MP, Minister for Education. We look forward to its positive impact and outcomes for Australian research!
We are delighted to see the appointment of the new Australian Research Council Board, announced today by Minister for Education Jason Clare MP. We are pleased that respected research infrastructure leader and friend of STA, Mark Stickells AM, has been selected alongside other amazing Australian research leaders to be part of the Board, which will be led by Professor Peter Shergold AM as Chair. STA strongly advocated for an ARC Board in its submission to the independent Review of The Australian Research Council Act. That review – by Professor Margaret Sheil AO, Professor Susan Dodds and former STA President Professor Mark Hutchinson – recommended 10 changes to the ARC’s governance and independent decision-making processes. “This is a highly experienced board of some of the nation’s stellar research leaders, collectively drawing experience across government, academia, research and research infrastructure,” said STA CEO Ryan Winn. https://lnkd.in/gSqFd3NA
