TRAILBLAZING ASC COHORT BEGINS PEARL HARBOR VIRGINIA CLASS TRAINING The first 28 ASC personnel to travel to the US to learn how to sustain Virginia Class conventionally armed, nuclear-powered submarines (SSNs) is now officially in training. Expert staff at the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility started the highly skilled ASC group (pictured) on their learning journeys last week. This is a significant milestone for ASC in its role as sole sustainer of SSNs in Australia – initially maintaining US and UK boats rotating through Submarine Rotational Force – West (from 2027), then sovereign Australian Virginia Class (from 2032) and Australian-built SSN-AUKUS (from 2042). More than 100 ASC workers will undergo this training over the next 12 months, and opportunities are still currently available if you’d like to be one of them. PASSION FOR SUBS TAKES ASC ENGINEER ‘BACK TO SCHOOL’ If ever there was a story to sum up the sense of purpose shared by ASC team members, it’s graduate engineer Jordan’s. When the Australian Government announced in 2021 its intention to acquire conventionally armed, nuclear-powered submarines via AUKUS, Jordan was living in Sydney and had just started his career as an aeronautical engineer. “I’d been working on jet engines and electrical aircraft with a couple of start-ups,” says Jordan. “But I’d always had an interest in submarines, and AUKUS really captured my imagination.” He made the momentous decision to move to Adelaide in early 2022 and enrol in the Master of Marine Engineering degree co-developed by ASC and The University of Adelaide. While studying, he joined the ASC Graduate Engineer Program and learned of our support for the national ‘Subs in Schools’ submarine-building competition. Keen to share his passion, he volunteered to play a part. “I initially just helped out as a mentor for participating schools, but am now co-managing ASC’s entire involvement. “I’ve also joined an ASC team working to develop a more affordable and capable model kit to help make the competition even more accessible and engaging for participants.” Interested in following in Jordan’s footsteps? NAIDOC WEEK 2024 COMES TO ASC This week ASC team members in SA and WA had the privilege of being welcomed to Kaurna and Whadjuk Country, and learning about their cultures through performance, as part of NAIDOC Week 2024. At our Osborne shipyard (SA) the welcome was delivered by Ngarrindjeri and Kaurna man Petiola Wilson, with support from Michael on didgeridoo and Corey singing. At Henderson (WA) the welcome was delivered by Wilman, Balardong, Binjareb, Whadjuk Noongar man Olman Walley, with the Boorloo Dance Group then taking the floor. The performances reflected this year’s NAIDOC theme, ‘Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud’, and captured Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures’ enduring strength and vitality. “We’re incredibly grateful to Petiola, Olman and their accompanying performers,” says Bridget, who leads ASC’s Reconciliation Action Plan Working Group. “It’s humbling for ASC team members to be welcomed by Kaurna and Whadjuk peoples to their lands, and be given the opportunity to broaden our understanding of their connection to thousands of years of continuous culture.” For more information about NAIDOC Week 2024, visit: https://www.naidoc.org.au (Images from SA event only – WA images unavailable.)

CELEBRATING THE OLDEST CONTINUOUS LIVING CULTURES ON EARTH ASC joins the nation in recognising and celebrating the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples during NAIDOC Week (7-14 July).   This week provides an opportunity for all Australians to learn about First Nations cultures and histories and participate in celebrations of humanity’s oldest, continuous living cultures through activities and events held across the country.   This year’s theme is ‘Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud’. The fire in the theme’s artwork (pictured) represents Indigenous cultures’ enduring strength and vitality, passed down through generations. It’s a symbol of connection to the land, to each other, and to the rich tapestry of traditions that define Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.    ‘Blak, Loud and Proud’ encapsulates an unapologetic celebration of Indigenous identity. It calls for an unwavering commitment to justice and equality, and invites all Australians to listen, learn and engage in meaningful dialogue, fostering a society where Indigenous peoples’ wisdom and contributions are fully valued and respected.
