Where does Australia stand in the global renewable energy transition? Last week, the Clean Energy Council's Australian Clean Energy Summit brought together key players in the energy transition from Australia and around the world. Leaders came together to explore solutions to the challenges and the opportunities that lie ahead. ARENA’s Darren Miller, Zoe von Batenburg and Alexandra McIntosh led panels and gave keynotes at the event, discussing Australia’s role in the global race to net zero. Australia's renewable energy superpower ambitions were put on notice by summit speakers, stating “optimism is not strategy” and access to resources on its own will not be enough. Achieving this vision will need collaboration between government, industry and communities across Australia. Continuing this work and these conversations is vital to ARENA's focus as we accelerate towards a net zero future. #ACES2024

Barwon Water will breathe new life into byproduct from hydrogen production. ARENA is providing up to $3 million for Barwon Water to trial the use of pure oxygen in its wastewater treatment process. This oxygen is a byproduct of renewable hydrogen production. This innovative trial will capture oxygen from Viva Energy Australia’s electrolyser, transport it to Barwon Water‘s nearby Geelong treatment plant. The typically discarded oxygen will then be used to produce recycled water. With over 1,200 wastewater treatment plants across the country, trial results could show how these types of collaborations can uncover innovative solutions towards cutting emissions and reaching net zero. How can we accelerate global innovation in large-scale solar? You’re invited to join the Solar ScaleUp Challenge. Do you have a ground-breaking innovation in solar that you want tested and scaled up in a real-world setting? Do you have a pipeline of projects or land where innovative technologies can be trialed? Do you want to invest in solar projects with industry leaders and innovators? Taking part in the Challenge is quick and easy. Successful projects could be invited to apply for grants from an up to AU $100 million funding pool. Funding could be offered as early as Dec 2024. Who should join the Solar ScaleUp Challenge? – Innovators and technology developers: commercialise your technology. – Solar farm developers and operators: find solutions to reduce operation and project costs. – Electricity customers: support decarbonisation projects and secure cheaper electricity. – Financiers: partner with technology companies on solar PV projects. – Landowners: use your land to create benefits for you and the local community. Want to learn more? Come join the virtual collaboration event happening at 4 pm AEST Thursday 18 July. Research is the first step in innovative tech solutions for a net zero world. We recently launched ARENA’s R&D round for renewable hydrogen and low emissions iron and steel. The funding round provides $59.1 million across 21 projects to realise solutions from R&D to commercialisation. The event gathered the R&D grant recipients from across industry and academia. They shared their experiences and ideas, poster presentations and took part in workshops. This opens the door for sharing learnings and challenges throughout project lifetimes. Keynote speaker Chief Product Officer Tom Campey offered valuable advice from Hysata’s own journey. Zoe von Batenburg, ARENA CIO, said the event shows the path to net zero ‘really starts with investment, innovative research and development working with some of the best minds in Australia.’ Many thanks to all who attended in person and online. We’re celebrating NAIDOC Week. 7 – 14 July marks the national celebration and recognition of the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The #NAIDOC2024 theme is ‘Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud.’ It invites us all celebrate the strength and vitality of First Nations communities and amplify Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voices. Central to this is ensuring First Nations people have a greater say and stake moving forward. This includes collaboration on research and development, ownership of projects as well as shared and inclusive benefits from transformative projects across Traditional land and in First Nations communities. Explore some of the ARENA projects that combine some, or all, of these elements: https://lnkd.in/g4P_ftJy #NAIDOC2024 #NAIDOCWeek #BlakLoudProud

ARENA is funding the roll out of community batteries to service Australian neighborhoods. ARENA CEO Darren Miller joined Ausgrid CEO Marc England and Minister Chris Bowen at the launch, held in Sydney's Bexley North today. $143 million will go towards delivering 370 batteries to locations across NSW, VIC, SA, QLD, TAS and NT. ARENA's Community Battery Funding supports the integration of renewable energy in the grid. The batteries store excess energy from rooftop solar generation for later use within local homes and businesses.
