We are proud to share that eight talented women from Architectus have been selected for the 500 Women in Property program run by Property Council of Australia!  This initiative aims to propel women into leadership roles within the property industry through dedicated sponsorship and development opportunities. Spanning across our Melbourne, Brisbane, Sydney, and Adelaide studios, we celebrate the inclusion of four participants and sponsor pairings. Congratulations to Aleksandra Lalic, Carolina Zequim, Laura Venier, and Vivian Sin along with their respective sponsors Ankita Agrawal Sardana, Lada Bodnaruk, Mia Fleming, and Lia Tsatsoulis. Their selection underscores Architectus' commitment to fostering diversity and leadership in our industry. “We have an exceptional pool of female talent at Architectus, and I’m thrilled for the cohort selected in this year’s PCA 500 Women in Property Program,” said Architectus Principal Diana (Rosenthal) Thompson, who is an elected member of the PCA Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee and has participated in the program previously. “These pairings are testament to the contribution these women are making in the industry and to our practice. Raising the bar for environmental sustainability in Australia’s newest city, AMRF Second Building is a balance between two extremes.   On the one hand, the Advanced Manufacturing Research Facility (AMRF) responds to the specific functional and technical requirements focused on advanced semiconductor and electronics manufacturing to address sovereign for defence and aerospace. On the other hand, it is a foundational civic building that engages in public life of the emerging city. Ambitiously prioritising materials that are sourced within 100kms of the site, while maximising recycled content – the design aims to reduce embodied carbon as well as operational carbon through on site energy production. The tension between public accessibility, sensitive advanced manufacturing, and research processes creates a complex plan folding around a central courtyard. As Principal Matthew Todd says, ‘the unique combination of functions in this building is unparalleled in Australia.'   Revealed earlier this year AMRF Second Building will jump-start Bradfield City’s evolution into a manufacturing powerhouse. The design showcases a cutting-edge and culturally responsive vision for the home of the most innovative, technology-ready spaces the country has seen.   Learn more here about this industry shaping project here: https://lnkd.in/gy_9j_r9 Or reach out to Principal Matthew Todd! We collaborated closely with Arup to achieve these ambitious sustainability targets with Aileen Sage, Jacobs and First Nations spatial design practice bangawarra to deliver a vision for Industry 4.0 facilities. #sustainability #masstimber #sustainabledesign #reconciliation #australianarchitecture #advancedmanufacturing #research

We’re proud to share that earlier today, our Rockhampton Museum of Art was recognised by the Queensland Government Minister’s Awards for Urban Design. RMoA is a sensitive cultural hub, delicately planned to slot into its urban context. The building frames and enhances views to the historic Customs House, while responding to the heat and sun of its tropical environment.  Public accessibility and activation drove the design response. Traditional circulation corridors are reimagined as exhibition rooms, and the open foyer invites the public to wander in and engage with art and storytelling. The Gallery plays a role as an important contributor to its significant setting facing Tanuba and Nurim, recognising the living histories in this heritage place. The physical and visual connections between the river, landscape and the city are central to the siting and materiality of the Gallery. The project was completed by Conrad Gargett, now merged with Architectus in collaboration with Clare Design (Design Lead) and Brian Hooper for Rockhampton Regional Council. Congratulations to our Queensland team David Gole, Luke Blake, David Oliver and thank you to the Queensland Government for this recognition! Standing just 9.5 meters wide, we are thrilled to share our hotel design for 323 Castlereagh Street has been approved! The 17-storey tower is no small feat of structural design. The form responds to complex planning conditions, with solar plane access requirements driving the distinctive wedge-like form to protect nearby green spaces from over shadowing. Located in Sydney’s home-grown tech precinct, the project reflects the city’s embrace of urban densification to invigorate emerging precincts. The proportions of the site create a dramatic pedestrian experience, with a 6-meter wide through-site link transforming the ground plane into a vibrant retail laneway. Principal Colin Odbert says the design of the hotel, “promises to be an exemplar infill development maximising the value of the existing property and delivering a world class hospitality outcome for our valued clients LaSalle Investment Management. It wasn’t easy but all good things never are!” Architectus was engaged for both planning and architectural services. Preparing the Statement of Environmental Effects was critical to secure the DA. As one of the largest integrated Urban Design and Planning teams in Australia, our two teams worked side by side to achieve planning consent for our client. If you want to learn more about our urban planning team please contact Tim Moore or Jane Fielding, or get in touch with our architecture team through Colin Odbert! We warmly congratulate Nigel Justins as he steps into his new role of Sustainability leader for Architectus. Nigel has been a key champion of, and contributor to our Sustainability & Resilience Framework from its inception, recently supporting the carbon planning process on our very own Sydney studio design. The outcome has been an industry-leading result, with the overall upfront carbon less than half a typical office fit out. Widely recognized as a leader in the transport infrastructure sector, he says his growth into sustainability was a natural evolution. His exposure to major public infrastructure works framed his perspective on public transport being one of the most significant linchpins for sustainable cities. He will continue his instrumental leadership in our rail and transport sectors while evolving our practice’s commitment to the planet and people. He summarises his approach to sustainability as one of shared responsibility - to quote the old proverb, “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.’ He carries on the foundational work started by Alexandra Lawlor embedding sustainability into our processes. Congratulations Nigel! A new era has begun! This week we’re delighted to announce the official opening of our Canberra studio. The expansion brings a familiar face to a new role, Alexandra Lawlor will be stepping into the position of Canberra Studio Leader. Her energy and creativity will be sorely missed from the Melbourne office, but we can't wait to see the amazing things she accomplishes across the border. Canberra has been a part of our practice for a few years now, with recent projects like the Telstra Tower and Canberra Theatre Redevelopment with Henning Larsen and Arup cementing the need for a permanent office. We sat down with Alex to discuss all things ACT, from key portfolio sectors to growing client networks. In a time of change and growth, one thing is for sure - we’re moving in for the long haul! You can read more about the expansion here: https://lnkd.in/gYgsppkn   Or contact Alex here: https://lnkd.in/gMfBQStG   #australianarchitecture #canberra #design #leadership #publicarchitecture #theatre

Last time we wrote about Sydney’s supply of outdated B-grade office towers, the response was galvanising. It’s no surprise this topic attracts lively debate, as the built environment industries race to juggle the combining forces of high office vacancy rates, housing supply pressures and increased regulation for sustainable design solutions. The adaptive reuse of our older buildings seems to be our best foot forward. This is our second article in a series that looks at what it would take to convert an outdated Sydney office building into a contemporary hybrid tower that incorporates a range of prefabricated Build-to-Rent apartments. One of our design teams, led by Principal Marko Damic, conducted a life cycle analysis and carbon assessment on this theoretical project. Their findings demonstrate how addressing the housing crisis can also benefit the environment. We're putting theory into practice. Last week, Alexandra Lawlor joined the panel at Property Council NSW's event, "Making Adaptive Reuse Work." The discussion focused on navigating the planning hurdles and regulatory complexities of adaptive reuse, alongside the well-known carbon savings it offers. A more sustainable architectural future requires intense collaboration across industries, we’re committed to knowledge exchange in the industry as we collectively face this global challenge. Let us know your thoughts! What challenges do you see facing our cities today? We want to hear from you. Read the second article here: https://lnkd.in/gcki3_hH Thanks to our design team for their exploratory work: Arup, Schindler Group, Marko Damic, Colin Odbert, Luís Rodrigues Salgado, Rianna Tan, Darrin Rodrigues Thanks to the sponsors and speakers sharing their adaptive reuse learnings:   Arup Clean Energy Finance Corporation Built. Barker College Maths and Student Hub has received the esteemed Milo Dunphy Award for Sustainable Architecture at the NSW Architecture Awards. Hosted by the Australian Institute of Architects on Friday, Barker College also received a Commendation in the Educational Architecture category, along with Blacktown Exercise and Sports Technology Hub (BEST). The Milo Dunphy award holds special meaning for our practice. It was our very own Laura Cockburn who was closely involved in changing the eligibility requirements for the Sustainability category – now rolled out nationally – during her tenure as NSW Chapter President of the Australian Institute of Architects. More robust qualitative and quantitative data are now required around sustainability measures in design solutions, leading to better outcomes for projects and the public. Barker College prioritised environmental responsibility by extensively incorporating timber as a carbon sink, actively sequestering an estimated 780 tCO2e. Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA) was pivotal to our strategy for achieving sustainability goals. The use of prefabricated timber components for efficient on-site assembly not only reduced overall energy consumption during construction but also minimised construction waste, aligning with best-practice sustainable strategies and contributing to a circular economy. BEST Hub also received a commendation in the Educational Architecture Category. Architectus’ landscape design for the project creates a cutting-edge “physical literacy” space promoting lifelong health and activity. Designed for inclusivity and catering to all ages, this space is for diverse users – from beginners to elite athletes. Our landscape design team collaborated with the building’s architects, ARM Architecture and CO.OP Studio to deliver the state-of-the-art facility. Congratulations to all of this year’s entrants and thank you to the Institute and jury for recognising the design excellence of these two projects. You can read more about these award winning designs here: https://lnkd.in/gUjXtDnD Special thanks to our project team members for Barker College Luke Johnson, Sam Morris, John Whatmore, Hope Dryden, Celine Chan, and Stephanie Austin. We congratulate our committed and collaborative client and consultant team Barker College, Buildcorp, EPM Projects, TTW Engineers (Taylor Thomson Whitting).
