Vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology has the potential to be one of the most groundbreaking technologies to enter the Australian energy sector. Amber Co-Founder and Co-CEO Chris Thompson sat down with Giles Parkinson from RenewEconomy's Energy Insiders podcast to chat about why car-powered homes and energy grids are going to be a key part of our electrified future. 🚘 “When you think about the fact that an EV battery is often, 6, 7, 8 times the size of a home battery… Our early customers are on track to make $2,000 a year from their EV, with doing no extra work except remembering to plug the EV in when they get home. 🚘 “We had one customer in New South Wales, just last month, earn about $300 in a single day from their EV. The grid was under a bit of stress, there were price spikes happening, and they were able to dispatch from their EV into the grid to actually earn those high prices which basically means money coming straight out of the pockets of coal and gas generators, and going straight into the customers pockets.” Chris Thompson, Amber Co-Founder and Co-CEO. The legacy energy industry has an interest in people being disengaged. Charge a competitive rate to get people in, then slowly putting up the price - the so-called 'loyalty tax'. What a turn out! We loved being part of this event. After our very own Aleksis Xenophon shared his crash course in energy markets and battery automation tips & tricks, this huge crew of ML/AI engineers got to work coming up with their own strategies to support Australia's journey to net zero, by optimising a battery to trade in the wholesale energy market. The teams are now in the development phase and can push their very own battery optimisation algorithms to an online simulator run by MLAI Aus. At the end of the hackathon, the team who's made the most wins a prize, while there's also another prize for the most innovative solution.
