ASI's Standards support responsible production, sourcing and stewardship of aluminium along the entire value chain.
About us
ASI is a not-for-profit organisation that is establishing an independent third-party certification program for the aluminium value chain. Incorporated in 2015 with a multi-stakeholder membership model, new members are welcome from anywhere in the world, from every part of the aluminium supply chain, and from civil society groups, associations, and other supporting organisations. ASI’s objectives are to: • Define globally applicable standards for sustainability performance and material chain-of-custody for the aluminium value chain • Promote measurable and continual improvements in the key environmental, social and governance dimensions of aluminium production, use and recycling • Develop a credible assurance and certification system that both mitigates the risks of non-conformity with ASI standards and minimises barriers to broad scale implementation of ASI standards • Become and remain a globally valued organisation advancing programs for sustainability in the aluminium value chain, which is financially self-sustaining and inclusive of stakeholder interests.

In this new video, recorded in Amsterdam over several days of in-person meetings, Indigenous Peoples Advisory Forum (IPAF) representatives on the ASI Steering Committee share their experiences and perspectives on collaborating with the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative. The video highlights the significance of ASI’s efforts in bringing together indigenous communities, industry experts, and stakeholders to co-create a sustainable future. Participants from various regions, including India, Guinea, Suriname, Ghana, and Australia, discuss the impact of initiatives that promote responsible practices in the aluminum sector. It was an opportunity to share experiences from their communities, plans and activities, and discuss further collaboration through ASI and other projects. Gain an understanding of the challenges and opportunities in aligning corporate behavior with the aspirations of Indigenous communities through discussions on several key topics: capacity building, community engagement, gender empowerment, and the importance of inclusive development. The participants emphasise the need for mutual respect, learning, and cooperation to achieve holistic and sustainable progress. 🌿 Inclusion of Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities in Mine Rehabilitation through FPIC 🌿 We are excited to announce the launch of a new project focused on empowering Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities to play an active role in mine closure and land rehabilitation practices. In partnership with Gulkula Mining Company, FSC’s Permanent Indigenous People’s Committee, and the ASI Indigenous Peoples Advisory Forum, this initiative will span Guinea, Suriname, India, Ghana, and Australia from September 2024 to February 2026. The project will use the principles of Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC) to build the capacity of Indigenous and Local Communities, empowering communities to contribute their traditional knowledge and cultural connections to the land to mine rehabilitation processes. This collaboration is especially important in light of the rising demand for minerals like bauxite, which is essential for aluminium production and the global energy transition. We look forward to working alongside these communities to co-develop tools and methods that will help shape sustainable and inclusive approaches to land management, with the potential for broader application across other sectors. This project reflects our commitment to support the implementation of responsible practices that respect the rights of Indigenous Peoples and foster sustainable development. More about the project: https://lnkd.in/ehnT-aZf ✨ This project was made possible thanks to a grant from the ISEAL Innovations Fund, which is supported by the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO). #Sustainability #Mining #IndigenousPeoples #FPIC #EnergyTransition #Bauxite #ResponsibleMining #LandRehabilitation #ASI Mark Annandale Jessica P. 🌍 Global Aluminium Can Sustainability Summit: ASI Drives Progress on Decarbonisation and Circularity 🌍 Today, over 150 global leaders from the aluminium beverage can value chain gathered during the Global Aluminium Can Sustainability Summit, co-hosted by the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI), the Brazilian Association of Aluminum Can Manufacturers (Abralatas), Can Manufacturers Institute (CMI), International Aluminium Institute (IAI), and Metal Packaging Europe (MPE). The Summit addressed critical sustainability issues, including decarbonisation pathways and recycled content measurement, showcasing the industry’s leadership in reducing emissions and advancing circularity. “As the standards and certification organisation for the full aluminium value chain, ASI recognises the importance of product-related claims as one driver of sustainability,” said Dr. Fiona Solomon, CEO of ASI. “CMI’s method for recycled content in aluminium cans contributes to an important conversation about the balance between market expectations and sectoral change.” ASI is committed to fostering responsible production, sourcing, and stewardship of aluminium, supporting the industry’s efforts to enhance sustainability and decarbonisation. Partnering with other stakeholders to hold successful events and key discussions like the Global Aluminium Can Sustainability Summit, we’re driving collaboration and innovation for a more sustainable future aluminium value chain. ♻️ #Sustainability #Decarbonisation #Aluminium #CircularEconomy #Recycling #ASI #Leadership Fiona Solomon https://lnkd.in/ehk5yHMS
