Before you blindly follow ideas and suggestions of untested theoretical possibilities, just ask if the modifications and extrapolations of other people’s research proposed is covered by an appropriate professional indemnity insurance policy with the associated run off provisions mandated by the relevant Ministerial Orders relevant to the jurisdiction. Does the proposer endorse and stand by the proposal in a legally formal way, as would reasonably be expected by credible experts? Are there ridiculous disclaimers pasted all over their outputs? If so, why? The answer is probably obvious. Research that includes actual full scale flow testing and empirical observations includes things like flows entering the rain head from the above sheets ( for example) unlike simplified theoretical models prepared to demonstrate a predetermined outcome. Obviously there are thousands of different configurations that MAY or MIGHT work, but does your client want you to guess? Is it intended under the NCC Performance Solutions that everyone is free to have a guess? There are also many configurations that do not work well and have inadvertent negative flow characteristics that can only be observed through via flow testing. How do we know? We undertook in excess of 3000 full-scale, flow tests for flow rates up to 100 lites per second. Some things we thought would, and should work didn’t and other things that we didn’t expect to work did! The Performance Solution landscape is a concerning mess all over Australia, particularly in relation to roof drainage and we expect a steady increase of building flooding over the upcoming years. If you or your client prefers to rely of flow tested solutions, designed by specifically trained specialists, with each and every Performance Solution covered by a $20 million professional indemnity policy, use an AHSCA accredited expert. Property insurers and property owners should require a certified DTS solution or a Performance Solution that can be directly related to current and peer reviewed research. If your builder, consultant or plumber are using methods and solutions that are not directly backed by a relevant research and an associated Professional Indemnity policy, you might have the wrong team. https://lnkd.in/gRP2Pfr9

The AHSCA is constantly being sent “Performance Solutions” that are ill-conceived, generate poor outcomes for the consumer and at times clearly negligent. When a Performance Solution is submitted please make sure that the author can demonstrate any calculations provided can be linked back to recognized research in the EXACT application used in the performance solution. Attached in an example of a Performance Solution prepared by a multidisciplinary engineering firm and prepared by a “professional engineer”. Not only has some of our technical details been used without our approval or permission, they are used in a manner that might indicate some validation of such a fundamentally flawed proposal. If you or your colleagues have been provided with a similar “Performance Solution” please feel free to send it to us for review. The gutter sizing methodologies and the sump and outlet sizing characteristics used in accredited AHSCA performance solutions was formulated by over 3000 full scale flow tests undertaken over a 3 year period at the University of Sunshine Coast. If your “engineer” serves you up the type of work attached, you really must ask yourself if they have any technical accountability at all. What else have the got so badly wrong on your project? What an alarming circumstance. Significant reform has begun and the AHSCA will work with the VBA and other industry stakeholders to improve the outcomes for consumers and rebuild confidence in the sector and broader industry.

It was a pleasure to have the Commissioner & CEO of the Victorian Building Authority, Anna Cronin, present to our membership at last Wednesday nights meeting. Significant change is on the horizon for the industry and the Commissioner announced that our President, Mark Alexander, and the President of Master Plumbers, Norm Anderson, have been appointed to her formal advisory panel. The AHSCA look forward to working closely with the Commissioner & the VBA on many reforms related to the plumbing industry. Norm Anderson (President MPA) provided an update on the developments of Complex Plumbing reform which will require design certification on complex systems along with other initiatives. Dr Surani McCaw of Southland Filtration taught those in attendance some of the complexities of Reverse Osmosis water management and touched on design, relevant materials and maintenance considerations. Paul Galvin of South East Water spoke on an emergency incident related to water pollution caused by hydrocarbons via PE pipe wall penetration. It was an enthralling conversation with much dialog. A magnificent industry night was enjoyed by all.
