We love this launch! The She Gives campaign aims to celebrate and tell the story of the collective contributions of women across Australia who are making a positive difference to various causes. We couldn’t agree more that it’s time that women making extraordinary contributions must also be recognised and celebrated. Thank you to our own Arise Leadership Circle members, who are women philanthropists all giving and supporting through resources, time and expertise: Angela Priestley, Arielle Gamble, Kristina Stefanova, Janette O'Neill, Lauren Hicks, Sarah Morton-Ramwell, Jo Norman, Asha Kayla, and Natasha Stott Despoja AO.

Women are set to inherit $3.4 trillion over the next 20 years (JBWere) in the massive transfer of wealth that's coming. Plus, a few other figures that could see philanthropy transform in Australia ⤵ 💰 Australia is behind some of our international peers when it comes to giving. Just 53% of those earning $1m are giving to charity according to ATO data, compared to 90% of those in similar financial circumstances in the US 🔅 But Australian women are having some outsized influence with the work they do.  In most years of the last decade, women have given a greater percentage of their income than men, while a greater proportion of women give than men 👉 Many women who do give feel their contributions do not receive the same levels of visibility as their male counterparts 💡 Women are often driving philanthropic giving in their households So the timing is now to learn more about the power of women giving. This is a great initiative and campaign founded by Melissa Smith, with an advisory panel including Caitriona (Cat) Fay Clare Herschell Tanya Hosch Kristy Muir Deanne Weir Natalie Egleton & more.

In today's Canberra Times, our very own Head of Campaigns and Policy, Katherine Tu, explains how Australian banks are using policy loopholes to keep pouring billions into the fossil fuel industry. While many banks say they'll no longer fund oil and gas extraction projects, they have continued to provide corporate loans to the companies behind them. How big is the problem? She says it's a loophole so big you could drive a truck through it, maybe even an oil tanker: "in the last few years Australia's big four banks provided almost eight times more money to fossil fuel projects in developing countries than the Australian government provided to support these, and other countries to adapt and respond to climate change." It's time for these banks to put a stop to the smoke and mirrors, and end their fossil fuel financing once and for all.

If ANZ wants to ‘shape a world where people and communities thrive’, the bank needs to stop bankrolling climate collapse. Climate change, and ANZ's financing of fossil fuels, is a gender justice issue. Not only do women and girls feel the impacts of climate change disproportionately, but the climate crisis is exacerbating existing gender inequalities. In 2016, ANZ committed to the Paris Agreement to limit global warming to 1.5°C. Since then, ANZ has poured over $20 billion into the fossil fuel industry. $12 billion has gone directly to companies building new coal, oil and gas projects – making climate change worse. Today we stand with 43 organisations from across the globe in this full page joint statement in the Australian Financial Review. We are calling on ANZ to be a responsible lender, live up to its commitments and stop funding fossil fuel expansion. #fixthefinance #fundourfuture

UN experts have issued a stark warning that famine is spreading across #Gaza, with three more children dying from malnutrition. 34 Palestinians have now died from malnutrition, most of them children. Our partners in Gaza paint a harrowing picture of the current situation, with pregnant women losing their babies because they are so malnourished and desperate mothers struggling to find anything to feed their starving children. The amount of aid entering Gaza and reaching those in need continues to be completely inadequate. The world cannot sit back and watch any more children die from lack of food. More life-saving aid must be allowed into Gaza immediately. The Australian Government must use every diplomatic lever available to bring about a permanent #ceasefire now. ❗Read the UN statement: https://lnkd.in/g4GpcmcT ❗Donate to ActionAid Australia’s Gaza Appeal: https://lnkd.in/ghVUW-gq ActionAid has local staff in Gaza and is working with long term trusted partners to provide aid and relief items. To date we have reached over 200,000 displaced people with humanitarian assistance including meeting the urgent needs of women and children. There are numerous challenges delivering aid at the moment, but we are working closely with UN agencies to access and support the distribution of aid. ActionAid continues to call for a permanent ceasefire, which is the only way to ensure humanitarian aid can enter Gaza anywhere close to the enormous scale required.

This is a terrible warning that #ClimateAction has to move into a much higher gear. ActionAid Australia supports women around the world who are leading the fight against climate change in their communities. But this alone is not enough. If we want to avert runaway climate breakdown, the wealthiest polluting countries need to stop fuelling the fire and agree to pay to clean up the havoc that they are unleashing on the rest of the world.

Have you heard about the network of women coming together to respond to climate change in Vanuatu? 🤔 In 2023, when two cyclones hit Vanuatu during the same week, 80% of the island saw damaged infrastructure, water and power shortages, significant home and garden loss. But on islands like Malo, women who are a part of the ActionAid and DFAT supported women-led early warning system, called Women Wetem Weta, quickly rolled up their sleeves and started an emergency response. Networks like these are proven faster and more effective than waiting for government assessment and aid, as thousands of women in the network share disaster preparedness information and warnings, and coordinate to distribute fresh food. Learn more about their incredible work in this article by Kristina Stefanova for Women's Agenda 👇 https://lnkd.in/gbtr4cSH
