Rivers are beautiful, but did you know their twists and turns can limit climate disasters too? 💧When they are allowed to meander, they slow down the flow of water, limiting damage during heavy rains. 💧Rivers that are connected to their floodplains expand safely in natural areas, limiting flooding in towns further downstream. 💧Giving rivers the space they need to flow naturally also helps during drought as the surrounding land absorbs water and releases it slowly. In Europe, most of our rivers have been severed, dammed, redirected & polluted meaning they no longer protect us, freshwater ecosystems are suffering & freshwater for drinking & crop irrigation is under threat. 💙The solution? #Rivers2Restore - a collection of transformative river restoration projects across Europe, especially selected by WWF for their climate, social and environmental benefits. 🏞️ Together, they make up 2,200 km of river to be restored that will contribute to nearly 10% of the EU Nature Restoration Law’s target of 25,000km of free-flowing river by 2030. 💧Tomorrow is #DanubeDay! Let's take a moment to celebrate and appreciate it. Approximately 83 million people live in the Danube River Basin and more than 20 million people depend directly on the Danube for their drinking water. However, over the past 150 years, the Danube basin and its wetlands have been much abused. Dikes, dams, cuts, bank fixation and dredging have modified large parts of the river system. More than 80% of wetlands have been lost, and with them the ecosystem goods and services they provide, such as: 🔹 acting as natural buffers against floods by absorbing and slowing down floodwaters; 🔹 contribute to cleaner and healthier water; they act as filtering systems, removing sediment, nutrients and pollutants from water; 🔹 store large amounts of carbon, playing a vital role in mitigating climate change; and many more. Since 2014, WWF Central and Eastern Europe, ICPDR International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River and The Coca-Cola Foundation have partnered to help increase water and climate resilience in the Danube Basin. By 2021 the Living Danube Partnership restored approximately 5,462 hectares of vital wetlands, rivers and floodplains, replenishing around 13.45 million cubic metres of water every year. The WWF-CEE and The Coca-Cola Foundation recently announced the extension of the partnership for another 3 years, with additional support from Coca-Cola Europe and Coca-Cola HBC. The partnership will continue to focus on: ✅restoring essential wetlands, floodplains and tributaries along the Danube River, ✅build resilience for communities vulnerable to water-related climate risks in urban and rural areas, ✅improving watershed health in the Danube basin and delivering benefits for communities, agriculture and nature through collective action.   Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/dnQSzpS6

🐟 This week, just a few days before #DanubeDay, there was an extraordinary visitor at Maria Theresien Square in Vienna. The largest mobile aquarium in Europe made its appearance, showcasing an array of Danube fish, including the majestic #sturgeon. 🌎 This event is part of the EU-funded LIFEBoat4Sturgeon project, aimed at conserving these remarkable fish species. The project, in which WWF is actively involved, represents a significant step towards protecting these ancient creatures that have outlasted the dinosaurs but are now threatened by human activity.
