Reflecting on a successful Business Angel Summit (BAS) in Bosnia and Herzegovina 2024! Our CEO, Berthold Baurek-Karlic, who was a speaker at this year’s Business Angel Summit in Bosnia and Herzegovina, emphasized a key lesson for investors: maximizing returns and nurturing the startup ecosystem aren’t mutually exclusive goals—they’re deeply interconnected. This synergy isn’t just good for returns—it’s the fuel for long-term regional growth and innovation. As the premier event for VCs and individual investors in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Western Balkans, BAS opened doors to impactful collaborations. Startups brought their best ideas to the table, and investors addressed new trends, regulatory shifts, and unique opportunities spanning the region and Europe. Venionaire Capital is committed to supporting these vital connections that not only strengthen the startup landscape but also redefine what’s possible for the future of European tech. Thank you Fondacija 787 (Foundation 787) for creating this powerful platfrom for startups and investors to connect. Igor Hadziahmetovic, Investment Director & Web3 Tech Lead at Venionaire Web3, shared his perspective on Bitcoin’s resilience beyond the US elections in a recent article. While short-term market movements are always interesting, the outcome of the US elections is unlikely to deter Bitcoin’s long-term bullish trend. Several key factors are driving this confidence in Bitcoin's future: rising US debt, continuous money printing, and the weakening USD are positioning Bitcoin as a favored hedge against economic volatility. Central banks, governments, and corporates worldwide are beginning to include Bitcoin in their reserves, alongside gold, reflecting a trend toward de-dollarization. The increasing acceptance of Bitcoin ETFs in the US and abroad, along with deeper crypto engagement by financial institutions, is reinforcing Bitcoin's strength as a growing asset class. In October, Bitcoin approached a new all-time high, closing the month with a notable 10.9% increase. Even after minor pullbacks, Bitcoin remains bullish as long as it holds above the $65-66k range. Historically, Bitcoin has experienced similar pre-election corrections, as seen in the 2016 and 2020 elections, only to rebound quickly afterward. In a world of economic uncertainty, Bitcoin’s role is solidifying—not only as a financial asset but also as a strategic hedge across political and economic cycles. The Startup Insolvency Wave in the Startup Ecosystem For the past two years, a wave of insolvencies has impacted the startup ecosystem. As Austrian investor Berthold Baurek-Karlic, CEO of Venionaire Capital, points out, insolvency doesn’t have to mean the end—it can be a stepping stone to a fresh start. Over time, Berthold has become an expert in restructuring, now guiding three companies from Venionaire’s own portfolio through this process and advising three more. The guitar learning app Fretello is one of them. “In this case, I experienced first-hand what it means to have no bank account from one day to the next because the liquidator has one,” says Baurek-Karlic. “When there's a fire, you have to prioritize in the right order. The fact that Fretello still exists is a team effort in which lawyers and investors have played a major role,” he says. “Funds are now asking again because they are interested.” trend. recently published an insightful article featuring Venionaire Capital’s CEO Berthold Baurek-Karlic in their latest issue, looking at the nuances of insolvency and restructuring in the startup world. In addition to Berthold, the article also includes insights from Adi Reschenhofer, CEO of CyberTrap, and insolvency lawyer Michael Proksch of Proksch & Partner Rechtsanwälte.
