🚀 The demand for #advancedmaterials is growing but the problem of critical raw materials is increasing day after day. This first leads to a rethinking of the way we manufacture high performance products in Europe. Moreover, it explains why the development of new #efficient, #lightweight, and #sustainable advanced materials is at the heart of many projects these days. 📢 On June 6th, the MC4 project partners PROFACTOR, TECHTERA, Noma Resins sp.zo.o., Reparaciones Náuticas Amura , and i-RED Infrarot Systeme GmbH were present at the "Efficient, Lightweight, sustainable advanced materials - Supporting EU industries to meet the Green Deal targets » event at the European commission. This workshop organized by European Health and Digital Executive Agency (HaDEA) was an opportunity to present the MC4 project to other European consortia working on similar topics. ♻ #Recycling glass-fibre reinforced composites into new products is one of the key challenges of the MC4 project. VDL Fibertech Industries BV is in charge of using the mechanically recycled #glassfibre reinforced #composites into new parts. To showcase their work, they were present during the closing meeting of RAAK projects on reuse of composites in Utrecht, organised by Lectoraat Kunststoftechnologie and Albert ten Busschen on the 3rd of June. You can check VDL’s post about it: https://lnkd.in/eD_Hm9sQ For those interested in the topic of #sustainable composite manufacturing VDL will be present during the trade show bus world next October to give a presentation about the MC4 project and their work. 🛥 Boatbuilding is one of the many applicative markets of composite materials. And as it is the case for other sectors, improving #sustainability and #circularity while maintaining a high level of quality and aesthetics is one of today's crucial challenges. 📢 Reparaciones Náuticas Amura was present during the #Navilia2024 exhibition. This event is an international shipbuilding exhibition that was held from the 21st to the 23rd of May at the IFEVI in Vigo’s Exhibitions Center. It was an opportunity to present the MC4 project to the public and companies in the maritime sector. They highlighted the circular process of #carbon fibre #recycling, underlining the crucial role that Amura plays in this field. 📢 For those who are interested in the topic of sustainable boatbuilding and recycled fibre composites: Amura will be present on METSTRADE Amstredam next November, with updated products and information about the development of their circular boat parts. 🚀 Transforming research results into successful industrial application proves to be a constant challenge. The topic of #industrial uptake was central during the #Indtech conference. This event took place in Namur from the 3rd to the 5th of June and was about industrial technologies and their current challenges. It gathered scientists from all around Europe around conferences, exhibitions and B2B meetings. 💡 Several topics were at the heart of this event like the European #competitiveness, #advancedmaterials? European #partnership or even open innovation test beds. In the exhibition area, European projects were presented and TECHTERA took the opportunity to present the MC4 project. Other partners like CIDETEC were also present and showed their support by visiting the booth. 👉 To know more about what was said during this event, don't forget to check the full article on the MC4 project webpage: https://lnkd.in/edTwiJNg Elena Jubete European Health and Digital Executive Agency (HaDEA) Processes4Planet Partnership Partners: PROFACTOR IRES i-RED Infrarot Systeme GmbH CHOMARAT Group GAIKER Technology Centre VDL Fibertech Industries BV Noma Resins sp.zo.o. 📣 Recently, the MC4 project partners are attending several events all around Europe. Last week, on May 22nd, Bartłomiej Bereska, Ph.D. from Noma Resins sp.zo.o. was present at the 28th International Fair of Plastics and Rubber Processing PlastpolFair. It was an opportunity to present the goals and research carried out in the MC4 Project during a conference called “Sustainable approaches towards green transition”. Next week, TECHTERA will be in Belgium attending the #INDTECH2024 the conference on industrial #technologies. The goal of this event is to bring together stakeholders from research organizations, industry, SMEs, and policymaking to discuss the state-of-the-art, technological challenges, as well as future trends in the field of industrial technologies. PROFACTOR is an Austrian non-university research centre and is the leader of the MC4 project. They develop production technologies such as #robotics, #machinevision, #augmentedreality and processes for functional surfaces. In the project, Profactor is developing inline #inspection systems for carbon fibre composite materials, pre-forms and parts. 🎯 The goal is to analyze the aspect of the carbon fabrics made from chemically recycled #carbon fibre composites via the #solvolysis process developed by Gaiker. A demonstrator has been developed and was even displayed during the JEC trade fair in March. It allows to identify defects on the surface of the fabric before the layup step. In order to do so, they are developing the sensors and also machine learning for the automatic detection of defects. Since the beginning of the project Profactor has made huge improvements and developments but there is still some work to do to have a more efficient defect detection system. An important aspect of the MC4 Project is the investigation and development of methods and technologies for the efficient and reliable #sorting of carbon and glass fibre #composite materials at the end of their service life. ❓ Why is that? Because the chemical recycling processes for such composite materials depend heavily on the resin system of the materials. It is therefore important to distinguish and classify composite parts according to their resin system so that they can be directed to the appropriate recycling route. The project partner who is in charge of this topic is i-RED Infrarot Systeme GmbH, located in Linz, Austria. The company produces spectroscopic real-time monitoring solutions for the control and optimization of industrial production, recovery, and recycling processes. 💡 i-RED was able to show that near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy is a suitable approach for detecting the resin system of both carbon and glass fibre composite waste. ✔ If there is one takeaway from the encouraging results of i-RED, it is that near-infrared spectroscopy has great potential to make the world more circular and environmentally friendly. The MC4 project aims at reducing the #environmentalfootprint of composites manufacturing by offering more sustainable processes with the #recycling of glass and carbon fibre #composite materials. To assess this decrease in environmental impact, IRES, a sustainability consulting company and one of the MC4 project partner will evaluate the environmental and cost performance of the newly developed recycling processes and final products through life cycle assessment #LCA and life cycle cost assessment #LCC techniques. In the project, IRES will first perform the LCA and LCC of the current manufacturing processes used by the project partners. Then, when all of the new recycling processes will be fully developed, IRES will conduct the analysis on these new methods. These LCA/LCC will focus on assessing the environmental and cost impacts of: - The end-of-life treatment (chemical/mechanical recycling) of composites - The reuse of uncured glass and carbon fibre waste in product value chain - The recycled carbon fibres used as secondary raw materials If you want to know more about LCA et LCC, you can check our website: https://lnkd.in/eEGHjKhf PROFACTOR TECHTERA Noma Resins sp.zo.o.
