𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐨 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐟𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐤𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐓𝐲𝐫𝐨𝐥, 𝐀𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐚? In Tyrol, Austria, flooding poses a considerable risk, particularly due to the snowmelt in July. With 89 potentially flood-prone areas, Tyrol is at the top of Austria's list of federal states. A high probability of flooding affects around 10,300 hectares, affecting between 22,000 and 170,000 people! 🌊🏡 💡 Important measures were implemented in the region from 2021 onwards, including Hazard zone planning by the Forest Act, agricultural and forestry measures, and near-natural water management. 𝐁𝐮𝐭 𝐰𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐡 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐬𝐮𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬? As part of KNOWING, we want to develop a comprehensive modelling framework to understand and quantify the interactions between climate change impacts and mitigation strategies. We aim to support regions like Tyrol to improve flood resilience through innovative solutions and joint efforts. ⚙ 𝐅𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰 𝐮𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐧 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠-𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞.𝐞𝐮

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐝𝐨 𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐛𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐢𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬? During the first Sustainability Week of the Arnsberg Climate Group, Prof Dr Rolf Nieder and Stefan E. Slembrouck presented the KNOWING project and the South Westphalia Demonstrator. This project deals with the problems of soil fertility and water management in dry and deforested areas, where many wind turbines are now being built to generate climate-friendly energy. Stefan Slembrouck began the presentation with a study that showed that wind turbines produce electricity very efficiently and generate minimal CO2, especially during production. He emphasised that the expansion of wind energy is important to achieve the goal of climate neutrality. Rolf Nieder explained how carbon and water are stored in forest soils and how much these soils are damaged by deforestation. He also explained how much space a wind turbine requires and how much can be dismantled. He also provided information on measures to protect and strengthen the forest soils during and after the construction phase. Renewable energies are necessary, but they can also harm the environment. It is important to minimise the negative effects and thus maintain a balance between climate adaptation and climate protection. This is a core concern of the KNOWING research project: the avoidance or mitigation of cross-sectoral "response risks" in the environment. #windenergy #soil #forest #watermanagement

Europe is warming at twice the global average. Heat stress, a critical condition where the body struggles to cool itself, is becoming a major concern. But what exactly is heat stress, how does it affect us, and how do we measure it? Copernicus ECMWF has made a great summary of the most important facts, that we want to share with you in this article. Worth a read! #heat #heatstress #climatechange

Heat stress: What is it and how is it measured?
