#ICMPDAroundTheGlobe 🤝 Complexities of irregular migration needs stronger EU-Africa cooperation ICMPD Director General, Michael Spindelegger, joined heads of state and ministers at the Trans-Mediterranean Migration Forum in Tripoli, Libya on 17 July 2024. 🤝 The Mediterranean Migration Forum seeks to tackle irregular migration, a persistent challenge in the region that purely security-based approaches have failed to address. While data and statistics show an unprecedented increase in irregular migration; the escalation is also influenced not only by internal factors, but also by international economic, political, and security approaches towards Southern Mediterranean countries. 🤝 Officials from 28 countries, including European Commission Vice-President Margaritis Schinas, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Malta Prime Minister Robert Abela, Chad President Mohamed Déby, Tunisian Prime Minister Ahmed El Hachani, and the host of the event, Libyan Prime Minister Abdelhamid Dbeibah. Nino Gogokhia, a 2024 International Summer School on Migration student, shared: 💬 "Attending the ICMPD Summer School on Migration has been an incredibly enriching experience, offering comprehensive insights into migration topics and creating a diverse, inclusive, and collaborative space for sharing knowledge and exchanging ideas." Prof.Dr. Melissa Siegel, from the Maastricht University and United Nations University-MERIT, one of the mentors at this year’s event shared: 💬 "I had the pleasure to once again teach at ICMPD's International Summer School on Migration, in Georgia. More than 50 students, future researchers, journalists and policymakers, had the opportunity to learn more about migration processes from different interdisciplinary angles. #July Featured Study of the Month 🎯 In the global race for talent, which European Union (EU) cities and regions have innovative strategies to attract and retain international talent? The study ‘Cultivating Talent’, commissioned by ICMPD's Migration Partnership Facility, analyses cities and regions within the EU that have innovated their recruitment process and kept key economic sectors alive with international talent. The analysed EU cities and regions are: Carinthia (Austria), Flanders (Belgium), South Moravia (Czechia), Vilnius (Lithuania), Barcelona (Spain), Gothenburg (Sweden). Attracting talent also needs to factor in the international workers’ desire for high-quality of life, inclusiveness, relaxed tax rates, and family-friendly societies, as stressed by an OECD (2023) report. These highlights the necessity of adopting a strategic and all-encompassing approach to talent policy. 🔗 Read our Featured Study of the Month in collaboration with ICMPD's Migration Partnership Facility and discover the gaps, opportunities, and policy recommendations for the EU to attract international talent and fuel its future: https://lnkd.in/dkv-2sjV 💡 What is the Featured Study of the Month? #July Featured Study of the Month 🎯 In the global race for talent, which countries within Europe and beyond have demonstrated the most effective ways to attract and retain international talent? The ICMPD study on ‘Cultivating Talent’, commissioned by the Migration Partnership Facility, analyses countries that have turned challenges into opportunities, fine-tuning their strategies to attract and retain talent to their labour markets. 📌 The analysed countries for the study are: Denmark, Finland, Germany, Norway, Australia and Canada. Countries need essential labour from abroad, yet the appeal of a location to global talent hinges beyond career prospects: 📌 An OECD report from 2023 highlighted that attracting talent also needs to factor in the international workers’ desire for high-quality of life, inclusiveness, relaxed tax rates, and family-friendly societies. These underscore the necessity of adopting a strategic and all-encompassing approach to talent policy.
