  • Mongolia is steadily expanding its capacity for early cancer detection and treatment, according to a comprehensive assessment by the IAEA, World Health Organization, and IARC - International Agency for Research on Cancer / World Health Organization. Raising awareness, screening and early detection are crucial to reducing the cancer burden in the country, which saw nearly 7,000 new cancer cases and close to 5,000 cancer-related deaths reported in 2022. The findings from this review are expected to help shape Mongolia's new National Cancer Control Plan, currently under development. More: atoms.iaea.org/3XqPjZV

Director General at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)

Somebody once said that to predict the future, we should build it. And this is precisely what is happening now with the adoption of the Pact of the Future and the recommitment to the goals that it entails. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), an institution born from an idea pronounced 70 years ago, is doing just that. It is doing that by underpinning the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons regime, which prevents nuclear materials, used all over the world, from being diverted for hostile purposes. It is doing so by preventing that more states add nuclear weapons to those that already exist. And it is doing so by deploying in a war zone to prevent a nuclear accident with terrible radiological consequences from adding to the misery of ongoing war. But, importantly, the IAEA is also doing this through its programs, like #RaysOfHope, which is bringing oncology and nuclear medicine to places that do not have a single radiotherapy unit. It is also supporting places where food is scarce, through the #Atoms4Food project. And it is working to protect the environment through nuclear techniques, tackling plastic pollution and protecting the oceans from acidification and other threats. In all these ways, the IAEA is acting as a vital instrument in realizing the lofty goals that have been adopted at the Summit of the Future. The world and the Pact of the Future urgently need concrete instruments to materialize these goals, including in energy, where clean nuclear energy is allowing more and more states to reach economic development without harming the environment. The IAEA is exactly that. It is an instrument of all the important goals and ideas adopted here, and it will continue to be so. We are all builders of the future—together shaping #OurCommonFuture. __ 𝑴𝒚 𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝒕𝒐 𝒕𝒉𝒆 United Nations 𝑮𝒆𝒏𝒆𝒓𝒂𝒍 𝑨𝒔𝒔𝒆𝒎𝒃𝒍𝒚'𝒔 𝑺𝒖𝒎𝒎𝒊𝒕 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑭𝒖𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒆.
