It was a pleasure and honor for GeoVille to co-organize and co-chair together with the European Association of Remote Sensing Companies (EARSC) during the 𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐮𝐦 𝐨𝐧 𝐄𝐎 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐨𝐧 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭𝐬 the Breakout session entitled “Enhancing Earth Observation Monitoring Capabilities”. GeoVille presented its latest developments towards an operational EO-integrated LULUCF and Carbon Removal MRV Service at Pan-European level in support of the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) and new ETS-2. GeoVille’s strategic innovative path in the climate change mitigation sector in recent years led to its involvement in several research and development and operational activities at national and European level (e.g., CLCplus Instances - LULUCF, LULUCF Türkiye, GDA Climate Resilience, Smart CO2, GHG-KIT, BREATHE, CarbComply). Uniting the outcomes of the above investments now offers a scientifically proven technological solution, with pre-operational testing and service demonstration in Austria and Türkiye, some elements (LULUCF Activity Data) being already operational under Copernicus. Thus creating an opportunity to establish an EO-integrated LULUCF and Carbon Removal MRV service potentially covering transition periods of 20-35 years by combining Landsat and Sentinel-2 time series. If implemented via high performance cloud operation system it can enable the roll-out at pan-European level, addressing the needs of both the compliance and private carbon markets. Nathalie MORIN

🌊CEMS Global Flood Monitoring - New Product and Service Quality Assessment Report available 🌍 As part of the Copernicus Emergency Management Service, managed by the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission, the Global Flood Monitoring (GFM) service, operated by a consortium led by EODC, provides continuous, automated satellite-based flood monitoring on a global level. The continuous monitoring and regular assessment enables improvements to the quality of the GFM product and the service in general and forms therefore an integral part of the service. The results of these activities, led by GeoVille, performed throughout the year 2023 are compiled in an Annual Product and Service Quality Assessment Report which has been published recently. The quality is assessed based on a defined set of Key Performance Indicators that indicate the product and service quality as well as the user uptake. The thematic accuracy of the main GFM output layers, i.e. Observed Flood Extent and Reference Water Masks, is assessed on a set of 12 known flood events throughout the year 2023 as well as from the Sentinel-1 archive which has been processed and made available last year.
