The CTBTO Youth Group was launched at the symposium on “Science and Diplomacy for Peace and Security: the CTBT@20“, held in Vienna, Austria, from 25 January to 4 February 2016. The importance of engaging youth was one of the main outcomes of the symposium Twenty years after the opening for signature of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT), the young generation’s involvement is key to advancing the Treaty’s entry into force. The CTBTO Youth Group is open to all students and young professionals who are directing their careers towards global peace and security and who wish to actively promote the CTBT and its verification regime. CTBTO Youth Group Objectives: MENTOR the diverse group of CYGs REVITALISE the discussion around the CTBT among former, current, and emerging decision-makers, scientists, academics, experts, and the media RAISE AWARENESS of the importance of the nuclear-test-ban on a global level BUILD a basis for knowledge transfer to the next generation INVOLVE new technologies in advancing the CTBT’s universalization and entry-into-force PLACE the CTBT on the agenda of the world’s most important nuclear-related events INCREASE young women interest in science and research

    On September 30, CYG and CENESS had the honour to host a webminar titled “The CTBTO’s International Monitoring System (IMS) and On-Site Inspections (OSI) Capabilities” as a part of the CTBTO Research Fellowship program. The session featured two incredible speakers from CTBTO: - Vincent Woods, Radionuclide Engineering Officer, International Monitoring System (IMS) Division - Tatiana Boitsova, Training Officer, On-Site Inspections (OSI) Division Their presentations provided invaluable insights into radionuclide monitoring and the role of on-site inspections within the CTBT framework. After the presentations, an engaging discussion followed, with participants raising insightful questions that sparked dynamic conversations. The high level of participation and expertise shared during the session demonstrated just how important the topics of nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation are for young people.     On Monday, September 23rd, CTBTO Youth Group and CENESS had the privilege of hosting a highly insightful webinar titled "History of Nuclear Testing and Negotiations of the CTBT" as part of the CTBTO Research Fellowship Program. Tariq Rauf—an independent expert and former Alternate Head of the NPT Delegation from the IAEA—shared his extensive knowledge and experience with us. In the first part of the session, Tariq delivered a comprehensive talk on the history of nuclear testing and the negotiations surrounding the CTBT, providing invaluable insights as to how international efforts have evolved over the decades. The second half featured an engaging Q&A session, where participants delved into critical discussions about the future of nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament.     On Monday, September 16th, CTBTO Youth Group and CENESS hosted an insightful webinar titled “Introduction Into Writing Research Papers” as part of the CTBTO Research Fellowship Program. 📝 The session featured two esteemed speakers: - Hanna Notte, Director of the Eurasia Nonproliferation Program at the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies - Adlan Margoev, Research Fellow at the Institute for International Studies, MGIMO University They shared their experiences and practical tips on mastering the art of research paper writing. Their insights into structuring arguments and navigating the writing process proved invaluable to both new and seasoned researchers. Following the workshop, participants had the honor of hearing from Ambassador Sergey Batsanov, Member of the CENESS Executive Board and Former Russian Ambassador to the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva. He provided thoughtful commentary and further reflections on the importance of research in disarmament efforts and diplomacy.     What an honor! The voice of the CYG was heard and shared at the #UNGA to commemorate #IDANT in New York! Sri Lankan Ambassador Mohan Pieris delivered a powerful call for a global end to nuclear testing, highlighting the urgent need for change.     🎨 CTBTO Youth Group Art Exhibition | New York | 4 September 2024 🎨 We brought the CYG Global Art Exhibition to the United Nations in New York! Anna Manuel, CYG member and one of the winners of the CYG Global Art Competition, was present to introduce her work on the margins of the International Day Against Nuclear Tests (IDANT). The theme, “A World with Nuclear Tests vs. A World Without Nuclear Tests,” was explored through visual arts, poetry, music, dance, video, and short films. The exhibition highlighted the stark contrast between these two realities, as envisioned by young artists, emphasizing the urgent need to end nuclear testing and foster global peace.     🌍 Empowering the Next Generation of Nonproliferation Experts! On 2 September, the second session of the Research Fellowship, titled “CTBTO Youth Group (CYG) – Opportunities for the New Generation of Nonproliferation Experts” kicked off with an insightful workshop focused on the CYG and fellowship opportunities available for a “new generation” of nonproliferation and nuclear experts. We were honored to have alumni from the 2021-2023 CTBTO Research Fellowship, including Fateme Fazel (Iran), Shinichi Hirao (Japan), Qiyang Niu (China), as well as founding members of the CYG including Asya Shavrova (Russia) and Sahil V. Shah (United States/United Kingdom) who shared their inspiring stories, experiences, and also offered invaluable guidance to the fellows. The second part of the meeting was a productive working session where Anton Khlopkov (CENESS) and Rajaa Gacem van Moorsel (CTBTO) provided detailed information about the fellowship course agenda and the upcoming research papers. This fellowship underscored the importance of nurturing the next generation of experts committed to global security and nonproliferation.
