A Thread too Thin to face the truth

Summary:

Adam wants answers after this face-off segment on Collision. Maxwell is divided on whether he should actually reveal what truly happened or not.

Notes:

Lowkey wanted to change the current storyline of Adam Cole and MJF because WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT?! This collision (I only saw the face off) was BULL. I really don`t like where this is going, both of them claiming to backstab each other in the back after the previous PPV was just not right.
Just let Adam take the fault. It was destined for him to betray Max. Let MJF be the good guy for once, PLEASE.

I`m gonna rewrite this- or at least the aftermath of it.

Let me know what you guys think!

Work Text:

Adam Cole couldn`t believe what words MJF just spewed out after their face off before Worlds End. The obvious turnaround of blame towards him and then the blatant disrespect for the friendship that ‘Better Than You Bay Bay’ was over the summer was just blasphemous. Pure utter blasphemous.

‘Better Than You Bay Bay’ may be a facade for MJF, but what happened after that with the blow of Adam`s ankle and the multiple hurdles he had to face after. That wasn't a facade for Cole.

For a time being, Cole was trying to see if MJF was actually going to change for the better. Turns out, that was all a lie.

‘Better Than You Bay Bay’ was eternal, and it changed Adam Cole to hopefully try out new things. Eventually, he decided at the end of the day to just betray MJF, because he wanted to know if MJF would crawl back to him. Adam aligned himself with his brochachos former troupe. Aligned with Roderick, Taven & Bennett to see if being with them would heal some old wounds he used to have with Maxwell.

Eventually- it worked, then it backfired. Then it worked again, and eventually everything came crashing down. MJF- regardless of his absence was still torn. He was torn, unsure if returning to his old smug self would work. But this, and then the Dynamite Diamond Ring Finale Watch at this coming World's End. Would eventually make things right. Finally ending ties with Adam Cole.

MJF can finally move on after this segment, this storyline that haunts him. This friendship has broken him enough. Collision however, was just the tip of the iceberg.

All the backstabbing rumours were just knots in different strings that both of them were making comeback after comeback with. The segment ran down the drain, in horrible sewer water.

After the fight brawl, and Adam`s devastating low blow to the dick. MJF left. He grew tired, his demeanor changed immediately, and asked to be alone. Not even his girlfriend to be around.

He hated this, maybe Adam hated this too.

He already knows Adam Cole hated this segment, it was a waste of time.

“What the hell was that Maxwell!” Adam Cole shouts at the top of his lungs as he barges in the door. MJF looks appalled as he hears the door flail out and a large bang sound coming from Adam. “You seriously believe that our friendship was fake, that is all a lie?!”

Maxwell grumbles out in frustration. “Motherfucker…” He spoke as he started to remove his scarf. “Dude. Leave me alone.” Adam couldn't take it. He didn't believe it.

Of course he didn't believe it. Both of them truly never believed it.

Adam stares his oceanic eyes at the others' dark bark like eyes that kept on looking down. Maxwell scratches his scruff, they were at a standoff.

“Remember when I said we weren't finished with this conversation? Yeah. We are starting that conversation again- right- fucking- now.” Adam then closes the door, slamming it hard for a loud bang to be heard on the other side.

Maxwell's eyes were sullen. His eye bags were present as he felt almost tired and uninterested. “This conversation will be over at World's End.” He says. “But for now- let's put a pin in whatever strings your pulling because- I'm asking you to leave. Now.”

“Then what was I hearing?” Adam questions. “You were planning to stab me all along, I was a liability? Distraction? Seriously?!” Adam was fuming, in anger and rage. “I…I cannot believe you would turn this around, when you and I know that wasn't the truth.”

“That. Was the truth Cole.” Maxwell spoke. Somberly. “You destroyed the progress of this whole shit. And I thought I was going to have hurdles and hurdles defending that title for what seems years to come with the constant things you kept throwing at me.” He looks at Adam.

Adam was angry at this moment. “That's- not what I'm saying.”

“Then what are you saying Adam? That I believed your facade, that you wanted to see me changed into a better person?” Maxwell questions Adam lump in his throat. Cole quickly gulped it down.

“I did. For a period of time I did. And then you fucked everything up.” Maxwell finally says. “That's why I returned to being the fuckface of the earth. That's why I said what I said. I loved ‘Better Than You Bay Bay’....I really truly did…but- it was all a lie because we couldn't pick who was the true backstabber.”

Adam's eyes widened in fear. Then Maxwell continued. “You hurting and taking a leave to heal, or me derailing it so bad that people got over it. And then the initial betrayal…we were risking everything to heal each other and I thought it was true- until it got worse.”

Adam and Maxwell gaze at each other, one with anger and one with somber. Adam finally questioned out. “W- Why? Was it all worth it in the end?”

Maxwell began to take off his coat, and started unbuttoning his shirt. “I mean…I guess it was, the story was more or less buried at this point. I needed to add more salt to the wound that was already formed.”

Adam had enough. He went forward to Max, immediately marking a slap to the male's face. Maxwell's eyes widened in the impact as he was wondering the actual reason for the mark. Adam then grabs the unbuttoned collar and pins Maxwell to the wall. Grabbing Maxwell by the neck Maxwell was in a nullified shock. Unsure of what was happening.

“You really like being the salt of the earth…don`t you.” Adam grumbles to Maxwell in pure fury. “I…how could you?!” Maxwell tries to pry Adam off. But Adam was firmly gripping the collar of the other male.

“I did what had to be done!” Maxwell shouts with a haste to his voice. “I`m-” Maxwell quiets himself. He cannot seemingly fathom to apologize right now. “I'm sorry…Adam…it had to be done.”

Adam's eyes began to water. “You fucking prick.” He grips the collar of the unbuttoned shirt and makes small taps of Maxwell`s back pound against the wall. “I- I thought…I thought…”

“Adam…” Maxwell whispers out. “It was my fault. This feud was going nowhere in the end…I had nowhere to go…You had alliances with Roderick, Taven, Bennett…had a segment with O’Rielly. I was turning into the old snob that was me. Making corny jokes and one-hit liners…I was hating myself. I was alone.”

Adam got pissed, lowering his grip. “You will be alone if you keep it up with whatever tactics you`re doing.”

Maxwell gazes at Adam, a sigh comes to him. “I know.” He immediately shuffles away from Adam and grabs his duffle bag into the bathroom.

Closing the door of the bathroom. He tries not to think, and begins to just keep changing. Putting his stuff away, changing into a hoodie, t-shirt and sweats. Unlocking the door, he doesn't see Adam Cole anywhere. To which he doesn't bother to make any emotion.

He grabs his stuff and walks out the door.

Eventually hoping for Worlds End to come closer so he can snap his thread with Adam Cole clean off.
