Chapter Text
Dream walked through the village happily, he gripped the bag of coins that were given to him from a sweet old lady that paid him for watering her flowers. He decided to buy him and Nightmare a cake for their birthday. Nightmare had looked a bit upset the day prior and Dream was determined to cheer up his brother through sweets. As he walked through the village, kids were asking to play with him which he politely decline.
Dream walked inside the bakery, there were few people there.
"Dream! hello, do you need something?" asked a deer monster
"Mhm, can I get a cake? It's mine and my brother's birthday today!" Dream beamed
"Oh happy birthday!" the baker smiled "Just wait here, I'm sure I got a fresh one already!"
Dream nodded and smiled
-------------------
"Here ya go kid! Don't drop it now" The baker patted Dream's head and handed Dream a box that held the cake
Dream opened the box and noticed only his name on the cake "um Nighty's name isn't on here" he said with a frown
"Oh well there was enough room" the baker excused himself
"Oh okay! I understand!" Dream shook his head and started walking off
--------------------
Nightmare looked from his book to see his brother carrying a box
"Dream, what do you have there?" Nightmare asked placing down his book
"It's our cake!" Dream smiled brightly
Dream sat by his brother and opened the box up "The baker didn't have enough room for both our names" Dream stated
"The cake does look pretty small so I guess that makes sense...." Nightmare says as he lifts up the cake out the box
"Did the baker give you forks?" Nightmare asked
'.....no" Dream said a little embarrassed for forgetting to ask
Nightmare sighed "I guess we'll eat with our hands then"
----------------------
After they had finished the cake Nightmare and Dream leaned on each other as night fell over them and the village. Nightmare had been reading to Dream since that was his wish for the day.
"He saw the little boy off, hoping to see him again soon. For the boy was the only one who sided with and did not see him as a monster but a friend" Nightmare closed the book and looked over at Dream who was drifting off to sleep on his shoulder Nightmare smiled at his brother and pulled the flag they had made over Dream
Dream slightly opened his eyes and looked at NIghtmare "Do you think that can really happen?" he asked
"If what can happen?"
"That a boy as simple as that one in the story can make a monster even feel loved" Dream rubbed his eyes and yawned
"Maybe, I think it can happen with the right person" Nightmare said as he laid them both comfortably at the roots of their mother
"Hmm can I make someone who's a monster feel loved?" Dream asked sleepily
"I'm sure you can Dream, you'll always make everyone feel loved no matter what" Nightmare closed his eyes "Sleep well Dream"
"Goodnight Nighty"
-----------------------
"Brother...." Dream murmured out as a small tear ran down his face. He slowly opened his eyes but quickly closed them back up as shinning white light hit him.
A gasp could be heard not too far from Dream.
"Dream! You're alright!" Blue cheered as his hugged his friend
"Blue the lights pleaseee" Dream said softly
"Oh right!" Blue let go of Dream and turned the lights down a bit and open the door to call out for Ink
"See I told he'd be fine!" Ink walked in and headed towards Dream
"Nice to see ya awake finally" Ink chuckled
"What happened? Did we retreat?" Dream asked sitting up and wincing a bit
"Well yes and no. Nightmare retreated it first but good news we captured one his lackeys" Ink told him
"Are they here?" Dream asked frantically
"Well yes but-"
Ink was abruptly cut off by Dream pushing him aside and walking to the rooms where they held people they usually captured
"Dream wait!" "Uh you should really be resting" Blue and Ink chased after him
"Cross hasn't even said a word since he's woken up" Ink informed Dream
"Yeah! He refused to speak with any of us!" Blue added onto Ink
Dream ignored them and walked faster towards the holding rooms. Once they got there Dream looked around to see which room Cross was in until he found the one sided glass that Cross appeared in.
"I don't care if he won't talk, I want answers and I won't leave until I get a response"
He opened the door to the room as Ink and Blue watched with annoyance as Dream continued to ignore them.
Dream walked in and chat in the chair infront of Cross
"We're gonna have a civil conversation whether you like it or not and we will not leave here until you give me the answers I want to hear" Dream glared at Cross
Cross sighed "Fine, the other too were way inconsistent on what they wanted to hear but you have an obvious objective here and I respect that." Cross leaned his arms over the table and looked directly into Dream's eyes "So what do you want to hear Dream?" Cross titled his head
