Work Text:
If Boq was right about the scarecrows identity, then for once in his life he had power over someone like Fiyero
Fiyero was rich.
Fiyero was a prince.
Even his name was better, who would want to be called Boq.
But now....
Boq was taller than him, just by a few inches. He was made out of stronger material than him, and while Fiyero had muscles that drove glinda wild the scarecrow looked like he would get blown away by a small gust of wind.
Dorothy called him brave for being so convicted to kill the witch. Some would say that he was leading their merry band of witch hunters.
Dorothy was 12 and terrified.
Despite being a talking animal the Lion barely talked no matter how much Dorothy assured him that they weren't going to hurt him for speaking.
Toto was an animal that didn't talk, and a small one at that.
And the scarecrow just wandered around confused and vaguely sad. Did he know that the castle they broke into was his, that the land they had walked through was his kingdom.
The Scarecrow did say he was lacking a brain after all. He didn't seem to remember Glinda, Elphaba or him. Even if he told him who he was, it wouldn't change much.
Completely brainless.
Yet the Scarecrow still had Fiyero's charm. When they first met Dorothy had been clinging to the Scarecrow like her life depended on it, after all there's an evil witch after her so he can't really blame her for that. But every time Dorothy was scared she sought comfort from the Scarecrow, never from him.
Same for the Lion, the way he acted around the Scarecrow was like a child that had found an old toy they had lost.
It's that charm and the fact people are naturally drawn to him that first reminded Boq of Fiyero. That and the squareish shape of his head.
Not that they didn't like him but it was clear that they liked the Scarecrow more. Story of Boq's life.
Even as a Scarecrow Boq was still second to him. Not even second, always last place. He was still prince charming, the guy who got the girl, the guy who got Glinda.
If Boq wanted to he could push him onto the yellow brick road, he wouldn't but he easily could. He has an axe, and straw was easy to cut through, he could......
"Friend," he calls the tinman and for some reason that warms the spot where Boq's heart should be. He says it with such innocence and trust that's surprising for Fiyero, and despite currently not having a heart, he would feel bad for betraying that trust.
He's being ridiculous, after all he doesn't know for certain that the Scarecrow is Fiyero. And whether they are Fiyero or just some random guy, there's no point in being mad at them. There's only one reason a Scarecrow could talk, and it's the same reason he's made from tin.
Elphaba either turned Fiyero or some random guy into the scarecrow.
So once the wicked witch is slain, he will not only be avenging himself but the Scarecrow as well.
