Work Text:
You fiddled with the red string that hung from your finger.
Though it was boring, it was better than listening to your professor lecture about the past. You wrapped the string around your finger, just to unravel it to wrap it again.
Over and over again while you thought.
You’ve always wondered how these things worked. Everyone was born with a thin red string around their pinky finger that only they could see. At the end of the string was your soulmate the only other person that could see the string.
You wondered who your soulmate was. Were they a guy or a girl? Did the string know you liked guys? Did the string know you were a guy? Does sexuality even matter when it comes to soulmates? Was your soulmate the same age as you? Will you ever met your soulmate?
Very few people do, most people marry people who aren’t their soulmate because of how rare it is. You didn’t like that idea very much. Why would you marry someone that wasn’t your soulmate?
Would you even love your soulmate, you didn’t believe in the idea of love at first sight.
You let out a sigh and laid your head on your desk. You stared at the window and watched the field. Some people were on it, either ditching class or practicing some sport.
You didn’t know what sport but you didn’t really care.
You glanced back up to the top of the class, the professor had their back turned as they talked about something or other. You looked back at your string, it hung loose at your side. You swing your hand, making the string slowly swing back and forth.
You were about to close your eyes when you heard the bell ring, you were annoyed and happy at the same time. You got up, took your bag, and walked out.
You put both of your hands in the pockets of your pants as you walked down the hallway to your next class.
Maybe you could take a nap. You felt a tug on your hand so you took it out and looked at it. The string was tight and pointing to your left. Your eyes widened, that meant your soulmate was close.
Your heart started to beat faster but you stayed still.
You didn’t know what you wanted to do. Should you go or should you not? This was rare, very rare. Your soulmate was close, you could find them and get a happily ever after.
Just like your parents said.
You looked at the wall, only a minute before your next class. You didn’t even really like math anyway. You turned and followed your string, running into things and people on the way.
You kept walking until you heard voices and the sound of running. You looked up to find that you were in front of the gym.
You felt your string tug again, the string was going straight through the door.
That looked really weird.
You took a deep breath and opened the door to the gym. You looked around. Children were getting ready for gym class. They were stretching on the sidelines or talking with their friends.
You noticed that half of that class had some people dancing while the other side had people playing with a basketball. You moved away from the door and placed your bag down before looking at your hand. You then followed the string until you met the back of the person at the end of it.
He had yet to notice you.
He was talking with a boy with spiky hair who was in a basketball uniform like the boy who’s string connected to yours. He was skinny, not really skinny and definitely had muscle mass. He had dark blonde hair that was a little damp, probably from gym.
You couldn’t see anything more than that but you could feel your heart race just by looking at him. Suddenly his friend looked over the blonde’s shoulder and pointed at you.
The blonde turned around and noticed you before looking down at his hand and following the string. Your eyes went wide, you turned around and picked up your bag before running out of the gym.
“Hey, wait!” You heard the boy yell, you wanted to wait, it was almost like something was telling you to listen to him, but you were too scared.
You kept running until you were able to find a door out of the school. You ran out of the school till you got to the beach. You let your bag fall to the ground and leaned over, hands on your knees as you panted from running.
You leaned back up and stared over the horizon above the ocean. When you woke up this morning, you didn't expect to find your soulmate.
It was a little too much to take in.
You also didn’t expect it to be a guy, what if he didn’t like guys? You wished you’d never followed your string, it was nice to find your soulmate
Yet you needed time to think about it.
“Hey!” Your eyes widened again, you knew that voice. Well, you’ve heard that voice before. You didn’t look, you didn’t try to run either, there wasn’t a point. The boy stood at your side before copying what you did earlier. “You run pretty fast”, the boy said.
You looked over at the boy, “you do too, it’s only been a minute”, you said. The boy smiled slightly, he was really pretty.
His eyes were blue, a light blue that matched the sky. You stared into his eyes with wide eyes, it was like looking at a gemstone. They shined because of the sun, so did his hair.
He reached up and wiped the hair off his forehead that was stuck because of the sweat. Yet his hair was fluffy, you couldn’t see it earlier but it looked really fluffy
It looked like gold, the sun that shined on it and the color, it made his hair look like gold. His smile, his smile made you smile just by seeing it. It made butterflies swarm in your chest.
This boy was really pretty, you loved it, you loved him.
Maybe there was such a thing as love at first sight. “So”, he said, holding his hand up to show off the red string that was attracted to his pinky. You brought your hand up as well, holding it parallel to the boys. The string was short now, it dangled in between both of your hands.
You both moved your hands closer till they were touching. You intertwined your fingers with his and the boy did the same. The string was now wrapped around your hands, like they were keeping your hands together.
You looked away from your hand and looked at the boy. He did the same after a while, looking at you with his crystal blue eyes. “I’m Takaishi Takeru”, he said.
“Takeru”, you whispered, you loved the way it sounded. “I’m L/n Y/n”, you said, hoping that Takeru would say your name. “Y/n”, he whispered, you loved it
You wanted to hear Takeru say your name for the rest of your life. You barely knew this guy, yet you wanted to kiss him, marry him, spend the rest of your life with him. You felt so nice just being with him, holding his hand.
“Can I take you out on a date, Takeru?” You asked, voice still low.
Takeru smiled, “sure”, he said. You smiled and let go of Takeru’s hand, letting your hand fall to your side. Takeru let his hand fall as well. Though you two weren’t holding hands anymore, you’d still be connected.
By a little red string.
