Work Text:
Silver’s exhausted as they get in the car and head towards the beach for a club trip.
They’re supposed to be cleaning the beaches, and at the end of the week, they get to throw a huge bonfire.
This is what he gets for following Malleus and Sebek to their environmentalist club when his equestrian club was canceled. Not that he has anything against cleaning the beaches and parks and raising money and awareness for environmental issues, however, he isn’t even a member of the club.
That’s where the problem lies.
Riddle, his club’s president, caught wind of his attendance of the club meeting, and suddenly their clubs were going to do a whole event to raise money for the chance to have this trip.

“This is such a good idea, and maybe I’ll be able to figure out a way to get Floyd off my back if I work with Azul… Well, looks like I’ve figured out what our next big club gathering and fundraiser will be for.” said Riddle brightly, excited as he pulled out his phone and started typing while leaving the horse stalls.
“I just got myself completely screwed.” muttered Silver defeatedly as he followed after Riddle.
“Oh, Silver!” called a familiar voice, and Silver turned to find Kalim and the other reason he had agreed so easily to go to the environmentalist club meeting.
Jamil Viper.
“Kalim, Jamil, what’re you two doing out here this late?” asked Silver softly as Riddle stopped and turned around, making him wince.
Riddle knew all about his feelings for Jamil, and that was problematic right then.
“We’re just taking a walk. Jamil wanted to bounce some fundraising ideas around with me because Azul, Floyd, and Jade didn’t know what they wanted to do. Since the Music club is joining them, I told him about the ones that we’d come up with too.” replied Kalim brightly, bouncing on his feet as he grinned.
Jamil didn’t respond, simply nodding his hello and snorting during Kalim’s response.
“Oh, wonderful! The music club is in on this too then? Do you want to bounce ideas around? I’ve just told Azul that the Equestrian club would be joining too! I have a few ideas already. Maybe we can come up with three that are easily combinable to get our club members better acquainted ahead of the trip!” exclaimed Riddle brightly as he approached Kalim, linking their arms together when Kalim’s eyes lit up.
Silver watched as Riddle and Kalim started walking, and his head fell forward as he groaned.
“Not what you’d planned when you showed up to the meeting then?” asked Jamil softly, so softly that Silver didn’t think he’d actually heard it.
When he looked up, Jamil seemed amused and curious, brown eyes looking intently at him in a way that he couldn’t name.
“No, it wasn’t. I just didn’t have a meeting, and they were my ride.” sighed Silver defeatedly, though he technically wasn’t lying.
Malleus, Sebek, and Lilia were his roommates at the apartments about fifteen minutes from campus, and they all typically rode with Malleus to and from campus since he was on campus earlier and later than they were.
Jamil said something else, something that made Silver’s eyes go wide and had him asking, “Wha- what’d you say?”
“What? I just said that it’s nice that they give you rides.” replied Jamil in confusion, though the tips of his ears were burning, leaving Silver thinking that maybe he hadn’t heard him wrong.
“O-oh, yeah, it really is.” said Silver quietly before Kalim and Riddle returned and they went their separate ways.
*****
Silver finds himself sitting between the window and Jamil.
He’s too tired to think of how he managed to end up here when he climbed in right after Sebek and Malleus. Instead, he leans his head against the cool window and tries to get comfortable for the ride.
Sleep tugs him down with ease as the car rumbles and starts to move. But the dream that accompanies sleep is not one he should be having.
Jamil is in his dream, but he’s so tired, he just lets it run.
He’s leaning against the window of their car when a hand finds its way between his cheek and the window as they hit bump after bump after bump. The soft pad of a thumb brushes over his cheek and then his lips, but it disappears as his head is lifted and tilted with a turn. Then Jamil’s arm moves around his shoulders, fingers brushing silver strands of hair from his face as he rests against Jamil’s shoulder.
What a dream.
To lay on Jamil’s shoulder, to be so gently touched and cared for by Jamil.
By someone who seems to want nothing to do with him and always leaves him so tongue-tied that Silver wouldn’t be able to talk properly to him if he tried.
This dream just may be perfect despite it occurring as he sits right next to Jamil… it’s a good thing he doesn’t sleep-talk.
Silver feels the car jolt to a stop, feels something on top of his head, but sleep’s claws are dug in too deep for him to try to figure it out.
Instead, he turns his head, nuzzles closer, and lets himself fall deeper again.
“-think you should say something.”
“-take a picture.”
“-maybe it’ll happen!”
Silver’s brows furrow and a familiar voice hisses, “We’re being too noisy, he’s gonna wake up. Let’s go do what we need to do.”
He tries to ignore it, the voices, the quiet squeals, the sound of car doors wrenching open and shutting just shy of a slam, but it has him groaning as he shifts and his nose brushes against something super soft.
It tickles.
But Silver knows he fell asleep against the window. He knows he did. Yet there’s nothing cool touching his face, instead it’s warm and soft.
“Are you awake?” mutters a familiar voice that has his heart jolting in his chest.
He jerks back, purple eyes going wide at the sight of Jamil, realizing that he’d just been sleeping on his crush’s shoulder.
“I- uh- I- I’m- I just- Sorry, I didn’t mean to fall asleep on your shoulder like that.” Silver takes a minute to get his panic and his tongue under control long enough to apologize before he clamps his mouth shut and turns to stare out the window.
They’re at a gas station, which means this must be one of the breaks that were scheduled into their travel time.
“You were fine. I would’ve woken you if it was a problem, Silver. Actually, I know you’re usually sleepy, but why were you so tired that you fell asleep before we even left campus?” asks Jamil curiously, there’s something in his voice, something that makes Silver run those words through his mind again.
“You- You know I-“ Silver’s eyes go wide as Jamil’s lips curve into a half-smirk that’s full of amusement. He shakes his head and reminds himself that it doesn’t mean anything before actually answering the question he was asked. “I was up late helping the others pack and studying, then I had a test before we left, so I was up early too.”
“You know that you could’ve rescheduled the test for this, right? Your professor wouldn’t have been able to say no because this has been planned for so long.” offers Jamil softly as he tilts his head and looks at Silver.
“Yeah, I know, but I’d studied for it. I didn’t want to push it back, plus I’m usually up early for my run. It just made sense to take the test before the trip.” replies Silver quietly, feeling his eyes droop again despite his best efforts.
“You can lay on my shoulder again, you know? I’d actually prefer it to you trying to sleep against that window. The ride’s been fairly bumpy already, and I don’t want you to hurt your head.” says Jamil genuinely as he reaches a hand over to brush the back of his fingers against Silver’s cheek as they flush red. “Please?”
Silver turns to Jamil, and his brown eyes speak of the want so purely that he can’t help but nod. Jamil gives him the softest smile he’s ever seen, and Silver can’t help but smile back as he adjusts to lay his head on Jamil’s shoulder again.
“Thank you.” whispers Silver as sleep tugs at him again, butterflies fluttering in his chest at this moment.
“No problem, Silver.” Jamil whispers back, then something soft and warm presses against his hair.
Sleep drags Silver under before he can contemplate why it felt like Jamil had just kissed his hair. Maybe this trip wasn’t a bad idea.
