Chapter Text
Something was different.
Slants of light streamed across the hotel room, causing Glinda’s eyes to slowly flicker open. Blonde curls haloed around her, framing her face as she let her eyes adjust to the light. Sometimes after travelling she had these moments where she would wake up confused about where she was and this time was no different. The softer bed and brighter light were unfamiliar but that wasn’t the first thing she noticed or even what woke her up. It was the weight she had felt even while she was half asleep; the weight of Elphaba. Her body was wrapped around Glinda’s, her head resting on the blonde girl’s naked chest. Glinda ran her fingers through Elphaba’s dark hair as she felt and listened to her soft breathing. A mark had bloomed on her neck from where Glinda had sucked too hard, the dark red standing out against her emerald skin. Memories of the night before began to come back to her, making her blush.
She had never done anything like that before. Well, she had had sex, although it wasn’t really comparable to what she felt last night. But she had never given into herself before, thinking only of her body. And of Elphaba’s.
You have no idea how long I’ve wanted this.
She was worried now that she had been too much, but her roommate had matched each touch, each kiss. Still, Glinda felt flushed when she remembered how eager, how greedy even, she had been. She was all wanting and need even now.
No one was going to ask her, but if they did Glinda would say that she had had these feelings for Elphaba from the start. The problem was that it took her a while to understand exactly what she was feeling. Throughout the past few weeks she had been thinking about this a lot and had come to the conclusion that this wasn’t a new phenomenon when it came to her relationship with her own feelings. Especially when she didn’t want to understand them.
When she was a child of about thirteen, Glinda got lost on vacation in the Quadling Country. She wasn’t even sure how it happened, but one moment she was walking the streets with her parents and pausing in front of a hat shop, and the next she was alone. She was in a crowded market in a town she’d never been before, people all around her but not the ones that she recognized. Her eyes scanned the crowd, hoping to find her parents or even something she could stand on for a better vantage point of the hustle and bustle. It was then that it happened; the ground began to tremor slightly, the first quake Glinda ever experienced. Around her people began to scream and panic but Glinda was calm. She made her way away from the crowd and towards a shop entrance, where a woman who was about her age now was breathing heavily, panicking. Without thinking, Glinda took her hand. The woman began to calm down, her breathing returning to normal and she smiled down at Glinda, a quiet thank you. It was the smallest moment but the smile did something to Glinda, made her skin buzz and her head feel light. After, when the quake was over and she was with her parents again, she thought back to the moment with the woman with puzzlement. She was thinking about things like that lately, small moments that maybe meant something bigger than she initially thought.
Oh, how she hated Elphaba when they first met. She was like no one Glinda had ever met before and she didn’t treat Glinda like everyone else in her life treated her. When they would argue Glinda would feel her pulse rushing, her whole body flushed and burning. But even then, when she claimed to detest her, she still felt like the world was more vivid when Elphaba was in it.
And then they became friends but the strong feelings didn’t go away. Her pulse still raced when Elphaba stood too close to her and she still felt heat when their hands touched. One day they had a picnic on the school’s quad with stolen baked goods and fruit from the school commissary. It was just the two of them, a relief to Glinda. But who wouldn’t want to spend time alone with their friend; wasn’t that the point of friendship? This was ignoring the fact that she spent more time with Elphaba than anyone in her life now: they had recently moved their beds closer together so that they could talk more easily into the night as the flame of their candles waned and sleep crept towards them.
Elphaba, being Elphaba, had brought school work with her and was quizzing Glinda on their history coursework. She asked question after question and when Glinda missed one she dug a text book out of her bag and began reading from the relevant section. Glinda felt herself dozing, Elphaba’s words all jumbled together in a way that felt almost soothing.
Elphaba tossed an apple at Glinda to get her attention, startling her.
“Elphie!” Glinda squealed in surprise. She started to laugh at her own overreaction, collapsing backwards onto the picnic blanket. Elphaba lay down next to her, laughing with Glinda. The shadows from the tree above them danced on her face, her smile soft and only for Glinda. And then it hit Glinda harder than a hundred apples: the intense urge to kiss Elphaba. Her lips were parted slightly, her eyes on Glinda. She was beautiful.
Glinda panicked. She left in a hurry, mumbling some excuse she couldn’t even remember now. And the feeling didn’t go away; in fact, now she realized all those times before when Elphaba made her flustered, it wasn’t because she hated her at all. It was because of the thing she pushed down. It all went back to the woman’s hand, the apple, another girl’s lips.
And of course, she had a boyfriend. If she were to make a list of every impossible thing she wanted in a husband, he would have met every single one. He was a prince, for Oz sake. But it wasn’t enough. Not long after the apple incident they started sleeping together: it seemed like an inevitability. She thought it might strengthen her feelings for Fiyero, might make her feel even a fraction of the fire she felt for Elphaba. But of course it didn’t.
Months past. She saw Fiyero less and Elphaba more. She made excuses. She still drifted to sleep to the sound of Elphaba’s voice, just a few feet away.
It never occurred to her that Elphaba could feel the same way: she didn’t know that anyone felt this way. Besides herself, and even that she would only admit on rare dark nights as she sneaked glances at the girl in the other bed.
Everything changed yesterday morning. She had woken up early to meet Fiyero in the woods. This wasn’t a rare occurrence: Fiyero didn’t sleep well so occasionally they would meet in the early hours, Glinda adjusting the curtains before going to sleep so that the early light would wake her while Elphaba slept on. She crept out quietly to not wake Elphie, her eyes lingering on her sleeping form as she walked past.
As always, Fiyero was waiting for her in the clearing when she arrived. He was tossing an apple in the air, as nonchalant as ever.
“Fancy seeing you here,” he said as he threw the apple away and embraced her, grinning into their kiss. In moments like this, it was hard for her to stay present. Today it proved even more difficult since in a matter of hours Elphaba would be leaving Shiz, leaping towards her dreams and her future without Glinda.
Sometimes, there was something else that her mind wandered to. She even found herself going there late at night, as she listened to Elphaba’s steady breathing. Thoughts that were much more intense than those she had felt on the day of the picnic. Thoughts that played out vividly and went far beyond kisses.
She pulled away from Fiyero to adjust her dress, avoiding eye contact.
“Will you be there to see Elphaba off today, dearest?” She asked.
Fiyero seemed flustered by the quick change from kissing to small talk but he nodded. “Of course. I’ll be there.”
“Great. She’ll love that. Have you ever been to Emerald City?”
“A few times.”
“I’m sure Elphaba will love it. I’ve always wanted to go, you know.”
Fiyero frowned. “Is everything alright?”
“Of course. Everything’s fabulous.”
“Because you seem distracted.”
“I’m just excited for Elphie.”
“You’ve been distracted for a while now. Months, even.”
Glinda opened her mouth to protest but paused, unsure of what to say. Her instinct was to attempt to smooth everything over but an image pulled at her mind: Elphaba sleeping as Glinda had crept past, her freckles making soft constellations on her cheeks. Glinda had thought she looked peaceful in the moment but peaceful wasn’t enough. Elphie was so beautiful and the thought once again shocked her.
“You’re right. I have been.” She waited for him to say something but didn’t. “I think I might need some time apart.”
“Like a break.”
“Maybe…. maybe more than that."
He nodded slowly, his face expressionless.
“It really isn’t because of you. It’s all about me,” Galinda explained.
“Most things are,” Fiyero said, not unkindly.
“I know. That’s how I like it.”
Fiyero smiled slightly. “So… what do we do now?”
“Breakfast?” She held out her hand tentatively and Fiyero laced his fingers into hers.
“Sounds like a good start.”
When things felt out of control, the best thing to do was focus on something you could control. For Glinda, that was clothes. She spent a great deal of time picking out her outfit to see Elphaba off in. Eventually she decided on a powder blue dress with a ruffle around the neckline, high heals and a matching bag.
That afternoon, she once again felt the world spiralling around her, moving too quickly. Why on earth had she changed her name? What kind of name was Glinda?
But none of that mattered now. Because Elphie had asked her to come with her. When their hands touched on the platform Glinda had felt that familiar spark and when she looked into Elphaba’s face she realized that she felt it too. This girl, who was so different from her, suddenly mirrored everything that Glinda was feeling with her expression. Hand in hand, they made their way onto the train, waving good bye to Fiyero and the other onlookers. As she boarded, Glinda’s heal had gotten stuck in a grate and Elphaba grabbed her arm to steady her. Elphaba’s dark eyes were fixed on Glinda’s and in that second Glinda knew she would explode if she didn’t kiss the girl in front of her. So she did. It only occurred to her after that she had moved too quickly and that this was likely Elphaba’s first kiss. Still, the other girl had kissed her back so softly.
All day Glinda bounced between certainty that Elphaba felt something for her before shifting with even more certainty to the fact that Elphaba felt nothing at all. On one hand, her cheeks had turned scarlet when Glinda mentioned that they should share a bed, which didn’t seem like the reaction someone would have if their thoughts were purely friendly. And she had kissed Glinda back, hadn’t she? But, when Glinda had stood up in the bath and Elphaba had awkwardly looked away and helped her into her robe, Glinda changed her mind completely. She’d been wrong, she’d come on too strong. She had ruined their friendship, their trip. Dinner was incredibly awkward and Glinda was sure that she had ruined everything between herself and the one person who… She didn’t even want to finish the thought.
And then Elphaba asked her about Fiyero, pulling Glinda out of her spiralling thoughts. Asked if they were still together. And Glinda understood that the moments before had been nerves and Elphaba was looking at her once again as she had on the train.
Glinda reached out and took Elphie’s hand in hers, intertwining her fingers with Elphaba’s. “Let’s go upstairs.”
In a way, Glinda felt like she had never kissed anyone before Elphaba. The experience had been muted until tonight, with Elphie. She was making up for it now. She was desperate to remove all of the articles of clothing separating them from one and another.
Elphaba helped her unbutton her dress, which was soon shed and abandoned on the floor. Glinda made quick work of Elphaba’s drab pinafore before leading them both to the bed. Glinda made sure Elphie was resting against velvet pillows before straddling her hips. She could hear Elphie’s soft moans as she kissed her way down her body. She wanted to kiss Elphie everywhere, wanted to chase those moans. When she kissed up her thighs, the other girl began to tremble, making Glinda pause.
“Please don’t stop,” Elphaba said breathily.
Glinda laughed at how needy she sounded.
“I wont,” she said. She let her fingers trail up Elphaba’s thighs. “I’ll never stop.”
Everywhere her hands went her lips followed. She liked Elphaba like this, so desperate and out of control. When her hips began to move involuntarily towards Glinda, she realized she couldn’t wait anymore. Her fingers began to circle Elphaba’s entrance. “Is this okay?” She asked. Elphaba nodded furiously.
Glinda was careful as her fingers entered Elphaba. She moved them in a way that she herself liked, and Elphaba must have felt the same way because it made her breathing quicken.
“I want to taste what you taste like,” Glinda said eventually. “Is that okay?”
“Yes,” Elphaba replied with a shaky voice. “Yes, please.”
Glinda moaned when she first tasted Elphaba. She was surprised by how much she liked this and took her time getting to know Elphaba’s body, listening to how she responded to each lick and touch. She kept her fingers inside of her as she licked her clit, circling it with her tongue, which made Elphaba’s legs twitch. Glinda was particularly proud of herself when she had the idea to put Elphaba’s legs over her shoulders, giving her better access. Somehow she understood what the other girl’s body wanted as she began to quicken her pace, her free hand massaging Elphaba’s breast. When she sucked on Elphaba’s clit her roommate’s back arched and her moans were so loud that Glinda was happy that they had never done this at Shiz, with the thin walls and gossiping schoolmates.
Glinda slowed down her ministrations but didn’t stop completely, even as Elphaba came apart, hips bucking as her moans reverberated throughout the quiet room.
“Fuck,” she moaned as her nails dug a little too deeply into Glinda’s shoulders, leaving crescent marks. She was surprised to find that she liked the pain, just a little.
Elphaba was still shaking afterwards as she held Glinda to her chest, stroking her hair.
Glinda started to giggle. “I can’t believe you actually swore.”
Elphaba chuckled. “Did I?”
“You did. I liked it.”
Elphaba was still and silent for a moment before she ran her hand across Glinda’s cheek. “I want to make you feel like… this.”
“Elphie, you don’t have to.”
Elphaba grinned wickedly. “I know. That’s what makes me so nice.”
Unlike Elphaba, Glinda had experiences to compare to. She had been touched before. But she had never felt any of the things that she was feeling now as Elphaba stroked her thighs and kissed her breasts. It had even crossed her mind that it was not possible for her to feel the pleasure she felt now. She had sometimes suspected that she wasn’t made that way. God, had she been wrong.
“Elphie,” Glinda moaned. From in between Glinda’s legs Elphaba grinned up at her.
While Glinda had taken her time, Elphaba was more to the point. She was quick to ask what Glinda liked (“Does this feel good?”, “Here?”, “Like that?”) and it didn’t take long before Glinda could feel herself coming apart on Elphaba’s tongue and fingers. As always, Elphaba was a quick learner. Glinda wrapped her fingers through Elphaba’s hair as the pleasure took over her body.
I’m yours. I’m yours. I’m yours.
Only afterwards, wrapped in Elphaba’s arms, did she realize that she had been repeating those words as a sort of mantra. That she belonged to Elphaba.
There was a thought that Glinda wanted to push away but now, lying in bed the next morning with Elphie, she couldn’t hold it back anymore. Unlike Elphie, Glinda had dozens of people who adored her and would even swear that they loved her. But Elphaba was the only one who really saw her and how could one be loved at all if they weren’t even truly seen?
Glinda was carried away from her thoughts when Elphaba moaned softly as she began to wake.
Glinda kissed her forehead once her eyes were fully open. “Good morning, love.”
Elphaba rolled off of Glinda’s chest and stretched her arms. “Morning,” she said groggily. “How long have you been awake?”
“Not long. Is it creepy if I was watching you sleep?”
“A little bit.”
Glinda laughed. “You’re cute when you’re sleeping.”
Elphaba blushed, her cheeks turning a red colour that matched the mark on her neck, which Glinda was now eying. “Do you know what you’re wearing today, to see the Wizard?” She asked abruptly
Elphaba looked startled by the change in topic. “Yes, I picked something already.”
“Does it cover your neck?”
Elphaba frowned, confused.
“Because I left a mark. On your neck.”
“Oh,” Elphie, attempted to glance downwards but couldn’t see the spot. “It should be alright. I think I did the same, actually.”
“On my neck?”
Now Elphaba was truly scarlet. “No, I think on your hip.”
Glinda pulled down the blanket to see the red mark on the pale skin of her hip. “No one will see that at least. Except you and me.” Elphaba leaned forward and kissed the mark softly, making Glinda sigh.
Glinda pulled Elphaba back up towards her and nuzzled her face into her neck. “It’s early, isn’t it? Surely we have a bit of time before we see the sights.”
Elphaba was silent for a moment, perhaps going over in her mind the detailed itinerary that Glinda knew she had planned out. “I think we have some time. What do you have in mind?” Glinda kissed her as an answer. She had waited nearly her whole life to be here in Emerald City, to see the shops and the sights, but now she never wanted to leave this room, this bed. This girl.
The Wizard could wait.
