Work Text:
Sun never considered himself all that special.
He could take care of kids but he was second-rate at best. He
could throw together a good drag outfit but he was too much of
a wuss for anyone to ever see it. Moreover he could’ve been a
much better brother.
But Taurus was something remarkable.
Sure the bull could be a real stick in the mud, but all the same
Sun just couldn’t help but view him admirably. He was an Astral
body and a handsome one at that, being the zodiac of the bull
made him a pillar of strength. In spite of being the spotting
image of a hunk, Taurus was no idiot.
Which is precisely why Sun agreed to tag along this socializing
sesh, which he was beginning to regret. He hated being so
damn awkward. Lunar was in the bathroom surely regretting
eating a fifth jar of nutella this morning and Gemini was
comforting their dumbass of a partner.
So that left them alone at the booth, cream colored fingers
threaded together as the solarbot desperately tried to come up
with something to talk about.
“Soooooo… Um, do you like p-peas?”
Sun felt like an utter clown and not the cool circus ones, why
couldn’t he just act like a normal person? Just as he thought it
couldn't get any worse the star sign piped up.
“What are peas..?”
Taurus tilted his head to the side in a way that Sun most
certainly didn’t find endearing and kinda adorable. He was a
fool, of course the zodiac who had never stepped foot on the
planet before a couple weeks ago wouldn’t know what the hell
peas were.
“Well they’re a find of vegetable- but not really, I mean they’re
fruits but everyone says they’re vegetables because they think
any savory crop is a veg which is widely inaccurate b-because
fruits are just the mature ovary of a flowering plant and-”
The canary colored bot froze in embarrassment when he
related he was blabbering, his rays slid into back his head until
they were just little pinpricks as he fidgeted. “Uh s-sorry, I
shouldn’t bore you with all the details-”
Sun nearly jumped out of his servos when a large hand landed
on his shoulder and gave an encouraging squeeze.
“No, please continue. Whenever I ask, I’m always informed that
I’ll be told later or be given such a vague response. I want to
know more about this new strange world, I wish to learn.”
A small smile pulled at the corners of Sun’s silicone face. He
couldn’t stop the slight way his rays fluttered, no one except his
family let him rant to them. He was either politely let down or
straight up told how annoying he was being.
“Well, it’s just that tomatoes, eggplants, peppers, peas,
avocados, beans, cucumbers and l-like a lotta other plants are
called vegetables just because they seem like they s-should
be!”
A hand was waved around in the air for emphasis. “And just- I
mean who does that? We make words to classify certain things
and then we just never use them right? Where is the
organization? What’s even the point!?”
Sun felt a little more confident when Taurus nodded along with
what he was saying. “That is quite vexing, some of the other
signs were always using vocab wrong. I did try to educate them
but they never listened, especially Leo.”
That got Sun to perk up, he couldn’t help but be a little bit
curious. “Leo?”
Taurus seemed like he was holding back as he started
speaking. “They’re fine, we get along alright it’s just Leo can be
so egotistical, he always thinks he’s right and knows what’s best
for everyone.” He pulled back a little. “Apologies, I didn’t mean
to complain.”
“No, no, It’s alright, you’re allowed to have your gripes, some
people can be so stressful, I- oh wait!” Sun dug around in his
bag for a moment before pulling out a fidget ring, it was black
with a white star pattern on it.
“I don’t wear it all that often so you can have it, it might help you
feel a bit better.” Taurus’ hands were large enough that Sun had
to resort to putting on his pinky for it to actually fit.
“A gift? But I have nothing to give in return. I didn’t realize that
we were exchanging presents or I would’ve gotten you-”
“We aren’t.” The smaller one clarified. “I’m just never able to
wear it because it’s too big, and it gets all messy from the kids,
so I thought you’d enjoy something small and quiet to fidget
with.”
The bull gave a little nod, “Thank you, truely.” Taurus seemed
almost fascinated by the fidget, he kept moving it back and
forth with his thumb. Sun pretended to look at the menu as he
watched the display.
Taurus’ bull ear twitched in interest. It reminded him of when
Dazzle or Jack found something that really interested them and
wouldn’t stop watching, learning, or thinking about it unless
someone pushed them to do it so they’d finally eat their dinner.
Sun smiled behind the plastic sheet as he looked at Taurus’
amazed expression. It was nice to hang out with someone who
wasn’t related to him.
The moment was interrupted when Gemini and Lunar came
back from the bathroom, they chatted idly filling the once quiet
space with noise. He kept his mouth shut but he was a little disappointed that the moment was ruined. Taurus didn’t seem
too pleased either.
But that was probably because of the volume, and that Lunar
kept repeatedly elbowing him. The baby blue bot didn’t even
have the decency to look sorry as the zodiac called him out on
it, Lunar only muttered a half hearted apology before going
back to chatting about the menu.
Sun let himself space out for the rest of the encounter, only
tuning back in every once in a while to add something that was
barely heard. He wasn’t too bothered, he was used to it,
besides he was more focused on the scrunched look of Taurus’
face.
The solar bot didn’t know what was bothering them but he
hoped it wasn’t too serious. That look seemed one step
removed from hurt.
After they ate and paid the bill, they went back home. Gemini
was apparently spending the night in Lunar’s room, and much
like before it left Sun and Taurus alone together.
“Bye.” He gave a small awkward wave. “Farewell.” Taurus
parroted the wave back. He turned on his heel and walked up
the steps, only pausing when he felt a hand grabbing his arm so
gently, like they thought he was glass.
When Sun turned, he was ment with an almost comical sight.
Taurus with his ears pinned down looking nearly nervous. “I do not have anything scheduled for tomorrow and I was hoping if
you could teach me more about this planet.”
Sun nodded yes. “I didn’t have anything planned either.” He
was supposed to clean his room per Moon’s request, but Tarus
didn’t need to know that. “It would be nice, does 9 am work?”
“Affirmative.” His rays puffed up as he bit down a laugh at the
bull’s reaction. “Good. I have to wake up a couple goblins in the
morning. Metaphorically of course.” He made sure to tack on
the end when he saw the zodiac’s confused expression, he
waved goodbye before slipping into his warm house.
Sun got Jack and Dazzle ready for bed, gave them kisses
goodnight, and read them both half a dozen bedtime stories
before they finally dozed off. He washed the dishes, unloaded
and reloaded the washer and dryer, and cleaned up around the
house.
He flopped down on his bed and tried to ignore the
endoskeleton deep exhaustion that was always there. He
thought about today. He knew it was just wishful thinking but
Taurus seemed to enjoy his company.
Sun smiled and mentally marked today as a win.

Taurus slowly slid the ring back and forth as he stared up into
space. He watched a comet dashing across the cosmos.
Taurus looked away quickly.
He didn’t know how to categorize his emotions. He wasn’t
expecting the puck, or well, Sun to be so generous. It was
unexpected but not unwanted.
Taurus had wondered what his personality was, Sun never
really talked one on one before, usually his kin was with him.
Now that a little more thought was being put to it the celestial
bot never truly interacted with those who weren’t related.
The gator came around but they always seemed to be
socializing with the blue puck. He saw the black and white one
there but she too was around for someone else.
Taurus thumbed the ring for a moment before coming to a
decision. When the time came tomorrow he’d ask Sun about it,
get some answers.
He thought over what happened that day, replaying each of the
events within his mind. He afterwards came to yet another
decision.
Taurus decided to cease calling Sun puck, it no longer fit.
