Summary:

Big, exciting changes are happening in the Harkness-Vidal household.

Notes:

Hey babes! Back again with a new little moment for this sweet family we all love. This is the first of at least three surrounding how little Daphne who was briefly met in the previous fic came to be. Thanks for all the love so far with this little universe, it means a lot. I promise we're not done yet. :)

Enjoy!

Work Text:

“I’m too nervous.”

“I know you are, honey,” Agatha replies, her arms crossed casually over her chest while her eyes track her wife’s pacing of the bathroom, “but we can’t know if you don’t look.”

“We can wait,” Rio counters, glancing up at her, her entire face giving away how frayed her nerves actually are. “We’ll find out soon enough when I start puking my guts out.”

“Well, you might not. Not everyone does. Some women have virtually no symptoms whatsoever. Unfortunately, it felt like I had nearly every single one with Nicky.”

Rio stops pacing and groans, a deep frown settling on her face. “I don’t think I can take another disappointment. I want the test to be positive so badly.”

“So do I. Do you want to look at it together?”

Rio nods silently.

“Okay.” Agatha steps over to the sink to grab the test and then steps back to Rio, standing in front of her. She takes a deep breath, waits for Rio’s almost imperceptible nod, and flips the test up, letting her eyes drift down when Rio’s do. She sucks in a sharp breath, her eyes instantly filling with tears.

“That’s…” Rio starts, her voice barely above a whisper.

Agatha nods. “Two lines.” She smiles at her wife. “Looks like you’re finally knocked up.”

Rio lets out a watery laugh, leaning forward to wrap herself around Agatha.

Agatha sets the test down on the counter and wraps her arms around her wife, holding her close and pressing a kiss to the side of her head. “It finally took.”

“It finally took,” Rio echoes, her voice slightly muffled by Agatha’s shirt. “I’m pregnant.”

Agatha pulls back and cups Rio’s face in her hands, wiping some of the tears from her face with the pads of her thumbs. “You’re pregnant, honey.” She laughs and leans forward to kiss her wife, breathing deeply as she relishes in the moment. She pulls back and rests her forehead against Rio’s. “We’re gonna have a baby.”

Rio laughs. “I know. But we…we shouldn’t tell Nicky. Not yet. Not until we’re out of the danger zone. I wouldn’t be able to handle the look on his face if something happened.”

Agatha shakes her head. “Nothing is going to happen.”

“It could.”

“It won’t ,” Agatha insists. “Because the third time’s the charm and we both want this.”

Rio smiles. “I love your confidence, baby, but I don’t think the sheer power of will is going to work here.”

“Well, either way, I have a very good feeling about this. This pregnancy is going to stick and we’re going to love this baby with everything we have, and raise them to be a semi-decent member of society.”

Rio chuckles. “That sounds like us.”

“I know.” She takes a deep breath. “So, what do you want to do now?”

Rio takes a deep breath. “Honestly? I don’t know. I’ve been so stressed about the test I haven’t thought much past it.”

Agatha nods, absentmindedly running her hands up and down Rio’s arms. “Okay. So why don’t we go relax for a bit and then figure the rest out later? Nicky’s still out with his friends, so we’ve got a couple of hours until he’ll be home.”

“Okay, yeah, that sounds great.”

“Good.” Agatha kisses her forehead and then guides her out of the bathroom and down the stairs toward the living room. She gently nudges her wife to sit down on the couch, grabbing the blanket off the back to drape over her lap. She turns the lights down some and then joins her wife on the couch, grabbing the end of the blanket to pull it over her own lap, sitting as close to Rio as she possibly can without sitting on top of her, draping an arm over her shoulders.

Grabbing the remote off the side table, she switches on the wall-mounted television across from them and loads the next episode of their latest shared reality TV obsession. It’s absolute trash, which is why they both love watching it so much. And they only watch it together.

Leaning as far back into the couch as she can, Agatha pulls Rio even closer into her side until the other woman’s head is resting on her shoulder. She lets out a content sigh as the intro rolls across the screen, the theme blaring through the speakers.

Agatha’s phone chimes next to her and she immediately reaches over to silence it, not wanting any disruptions during this moment. She glances at the screen just to make sure it’s nothing too important, a smile tugging at her lips when her eyes catch the date.

“You know what I’ve just realized?” she says quietly to her wife.

Rio hums in reply.

“We’ve got an anniversary baby.”

Rio shifts slightly and looks up at her with furrowed brows. “What?”

“An anniversary baby,” Agatha repeats. “Kinda like couples who get pregnant on their honeymoon, except we somehow managed to schedule your latest procedure during the week of our anniversary without realizing.”

Rio smiles. “Who says one of us didn’t?”

Agatha gapes. “Wha…you…” She lets out a huff of air, her smile widening. “You knew when you booked the appointment?”

Rio shrugs. “It felt right. Honestly, I thought you would have noticed too.”

“I’m surprised I didn’t.” She leans down to kiss Rio. “I love you so much.”

“I love you too. I’m so happy this is finally happening for us.”

Agatha smiles brightly. “Me too.”

.

.

.

Over the next several weeks, Agatha does her best to not let the cat out of the bag, wanting to respect Rio’s wishes as well as alleviate her own fears. It’s only when they’re alone that Agatha will let her hands rest on Rio’s taut stomach or whisper words of affection to their unborn child. She wants them to know her voice as much as they’ll know Rio’s. She spoke to her stomach every day when she was pregnant with Nicky, read books to him and sang him songs. She’s gonna do the same thing with this baby even if she’s not the one carrying it.

Even now as she and Rio relax together on the couch, her head rests in Rio’s lap while she reads aloud from one of her favorite classics, Rio’s fingers running gently through her hair. “...and on the way they met the grandmother coming home,” Agatha speaks softly, her head tilted toward her wife’s small pregnant belly. “One blow from a woodcutter’s sharp ax and the wicked wolf lay dead on the floor. And of one thing you may be sure, Little Red Riding Hood never stopped in the woods again to talk with a wolf.”

“Remind me again why you’re reading our innocent child stories about killing wolves?”

Agatha rolls her eyes, setting the book on her chest and looking up at Rio. “They have important life lessons.”

Rio laughs and nods. “I see. And did you read these stories to Nicky too?”

“Of course.”

“Well, I suppose he has become a pretty decently adjusted child, so reading the new kid some unconventional bedtime stories isn’t the worst idea.”

Agatha smiles. “I’m glad you see it my way. And speaking of Nicky, he should be home soon.” She pushes herself up so she’s sitting and faces her wife, removing her glasses and setting them aside. “Do you still want to tell him today?”

Rio nods, taking a deep breath. “Yeah. We’ve waited the recommended length of time and I feel great. Besides, Nicky’s gonna notice sooner or later once I really start growing. I just hope he’s gonna be okay with it.”

Agatha smiles gently, reaching out to grab one of Rio’s hands and give it a small, comforting squeeze. “He’ll be over the moon, I promise.”

Moments later, the front door opens and closes, the sound echoing faintly. “Moms? I’m home.”

Rio sucks in a sharp breath, squeezing Agatha’s hand. “Now or never.” She shifts on the couch, turning slightly. “Nicky? Ven aquí, por favor.”

Nicky practically skips into the room and stops behind the couch, leaning against it. “Hi.”

Agatha smiles at the boy. “Hi, kiddo. How was your lesson?”

“Really good. Alice says I improved a lot since last time.”

“Well that’s what happens when you practice every day like you’re supposed to,” she teases lightly. “Can you have a seat real quick? Mamá and I want to talk to you about something.”

Nicky walks around the couch with furrowed brows, then sits down on the edge of the coffee table. “What’s going on?”

Rio takes a deep breath, holding tightly to Agatha’s hand. “Mijo, how would you feel about getting a little brother or little sister?”

Nicky’s eyes go wide. “I’m gonna be a brother?”

“Is that okay?”

He launches himself over to them, hugging them both close. “This is the best!” He leans back and looks at Agatha. “Are you gonna carry it like you did with me?”

“Actually,” Rio starts, “I am. Mama had all the fun with you, I wanted a turn this time around.”

Nicky grins, shifting so his face is hovering over Rio’s stomach. “Hi, baby brother or baby sister. I’m Nicky, I’m your big brother. We’ve got the coolest moms in the whole world. You’re gonna love them.”

“So you're okay with this?” Agatha asks.

Nicky looks up and nods. “So okay. I’m gonna be a big brother. This is so cool! When are they gonna be born?”

“Not until March,” Rio tells him. “So we’ve still got a ways to go. And there’s a lot to do between now and then.”

“I can help you,” Nicky states.

Agatha smiles, reaching out to push some of his hair back and cradle his face. “We know you can, kiddo. And you’re gonna be the best helper and best big brother.”

“Can I tell all my friends?” he asks excitedly. “Have you told Lilia yet? ‘Cause I wanna tell her too. She told me the last time I saw her that something life-changing was gonna happen, and I think this is what she meant even if she didn’t actually know it.”

Agatha laughs quietly, glancing quickly at Rio and then back at their son. “Yeah, you can tell Lilia. Do you want to call her now?”

“Yeah. Where’s your phone?”

She easily digs it out and unlocks it, pulling up Lilia’s contact and then handing the device over to her son.

Nicky eagerly takes the phone, tapping at the screen and then holding it to his ear. It only takes a few seconds before he speaks, “No, Lilia, it’s me.” He beams as he turns around and heads out of the room, continuing his conversation with the older woman.

When it’s just the two of them again, Agatha lets out a breath and looks at her wife, taking in every part of her. She has already started to look more tired over the last few weeks, but to Agatha, she’ll always be the most beautiful woman. Especially right now since she’s carrying their child. Her eyes drift down to the small swell of Rio’s abdomen, a smile tugging at her lips.

While there is a small part of her that would have loved to have been the one to carry their baby, she is glad that Rio wanted to have the experience. She knows she’s just going to grow more in love and in awe of her wife as their child continues to grow in her womb. It’s an amazing thing.

“Hey, what’s on your mind?”

Agatha pulls out of her thoughts and smiles at her wife, wordlessly tapping Rio’s leg and then gesturing. Rio follows through, spinning on the couch to place her feet in Agatha’s lap and lean back against the arm. Agatha slowly begins massaging the appendages, knowing from personal experience how achey one’s feet can get during pregnancy, and given that she didn’t have anyone to do this for her when she had Nicky, she wants to do it for Rio.

“Talk to me, baby.”

Agatha lets out a breath, momentarily pausing her movements. She starts up again and opens her mouth to speak, “I’m so happy that Nicky is excited.”

“But…?” Rio prods.

“I guess there’s that part of me that’s still worried. I know that every pregnancy is different, especially between two different women, and that it’s highly unlikely that what happened with Nicky will happen with the new baby, but I…” she trails off, needing a moment to gather her thoughts. “I’m still scared that something could happen. To you or the baby. Or both. I can’t…I can’t lose you. Either of you.”

Rio scoots forward on the couch, her legs sliding around Agatha’s waist until Rio’s planted firmly in her lap. Her hands come up to cradle Agatha’s face. “I can’t promise something won’t happen, you know better than me that pregnancy can be unpredictable. But if you think I won’t do absolutely everything in my power to keep myself and this baby here with you and Nicky, then you have to be the dumbest smart woman I have ever met.”

Agatha smiles, tears pricking at her eyes as she lets one of her hands splay out across Rio’s small belly, her thumb gently rubbing back and forth “I didn’t think I’d ever be this happy.”

“Neither did I. But we’re here, and we’re growing our family, please try not to dwell on the what-ifs, okay?”

“I’ll do my best.” She leans forward to kiss her wife. “I love you.”

“I love you too.”

Notes:

So? What did you think? Let me know in a review down below, I'd love to hear your thoughts.

In case you didn't pick up on it in the fic, the story that Agatha is reading is Red Riding Hood from Grimm's Fairytales; there are so many different endings for those fairytales, this is just the one I happened to find and choose.

Until next time,
Jellybean96 out!
