Being possessed by such a powerful curse for months, Okarun should've realized there would be drawbacks. Turbo Granny's raw power was burning him from the inside out. The spirit told him so one time late at night. After another grueling battle in the books, Momo promptly fell asleep not long after but Okarun was still thrumming with energy.
"You're very lucky brat, holding onto my power for so long. If it were anyone else my aura would've overtaken theirs and snuff them out."
No one had ever called him lucky before, in fact, he figured he was the unluckiest teenager. Before meeting Momo, he had no friends, his parents were away for months at a time, and he used to get relentlessly bullied.
Then he met Momo Ayase and her grandmother. What once was black and white existence, burst into technicolor. With his new technicolor world now came trying to conceal his changing body and personality of his cursed form. He hit a growth spurt, and his voice went down an octave, however, it still wasn't as deep when he's transformed. His once out-of-shape skinny body was now toned.
He was also quicker to anger, his cursed form going haywire when overwhelmed with emotions. When he's fatigued, he loses his filter like he did when he was his other self.
Okarun woke up in a cold sweat. Kicking off his covers, he hastely removes his sweat-soaked shirt. He felt strangled in his own body, the power hummed underneath his skin making him itch.
He strayed into the bathroom, rubbing his eyes. Instead of the warm brown, blood-red stared back at him. His heart rate picked up from his panic. The heightened emotion caused the red lines to appear on his face. Small wisps of flame sprouted along his collarbones.
"Wait, don't freak out. If you freak out then you'll totally go full Turbo." He huffed, "Just take a deep breath."
Okarun closed his eyes, counting to 10, and released a a calming breath out his mouth. He opened his eyes to look at his reflection again. The fire had died down but his eyes remained the same.
He slammed a fist down in frustration, cracking the top of his counter. He jumped back, startled at his strength. He couldn't stay there staring at himself. Maybe he could burn off this energy? The moon was bright and full, a perfect night to go for a run. Okarun emerged from his room, he didn't have to worry about his parents, they were away again on another business trip.
As soon as he got on the street he took off. The scenery around him blurred together all of the colors. His legs carried him instinctively, twisting around corners and blazing through stores.
He skidded to a stop, taking a breath to see where his legs took him. In the back of his mind, he recognized the rice fields he was in. His sight was no issue in the dark, in fact in his yokai form he didn't need his glasses. They were more of an accessory than anything. He could see in the not-so-far distance, the silhouette of a familiar house.
He sighed heavily, "Man, I didn't want her to see me like this...what a bummer."
Okarun slunk his way through the arch. He went across the back of the house where he knew the window to Momo's room resided. It was easy scaling to the second floor with his cursed strength. The window was already open a crack, he stuck his long fingers in to nudge it up higher.
A tingling sensation wrapped around his body as soon as he stuck half his body inside. He groaned when he felt his body being pulled completely inside and slammed against the opposite wall.
"You gotta a lot of nerve trying to rob the home of two psychics."
"Man, I can't control my body, what a bummer."
"Wha—Okarun?!"
"I didn't mean to wake you up."
The tingling ceased as Momo retracted her energy hands. He slumped back to the ground. He remained in a crouch, his knuckles brushing the ground.
"Why are you transformed? Is there trouble?"
He shook his head like a dog, stretching out his limbs and unfurling himself to stand at his full height. "No trouble, can't sleep."
The corner of her lips turned down. "What's going on?"
He fixed his glasses but stayed silent. Huffing, she got out of bed and grabbed his wrist.
She pulled him over to her bed. "I'm too tired to deal with your weird shit."
"Don't worry about me Momo."
"Of course, I worry about you dumbass. You're my boyfriend." Pushing him on top of her bed, his feet hang off the edge because of his long form.
Momo tucked herself in next to him. "I know something is stress'n you out but I'm too tired to beat it out of you."
A throaty chuckle escaped from his mask of teeth. "You know how to keep me on my toes, babe."
Momo turned on her side to look at him. A finger trailed along his black jaw. The feeling caused his teeth to detract and disappear.
"I missed you yo."
She traced one of the red lines down his face. He took the initiative to kiss her first. He always did when he was in that form.
"Okaruuun."
He nipped at her neck, "Yo."
She whimpered, "Okay, even though I find your raspy deep voice really hot right now. It's 2 in the morning."
An inhuman sound rumbled in his chest as he pressed his forehead into hers.
She wrapped her arms around his neck, pulling him almost on top of her. Her hands nestled in his wild white hair.
Okarun breathed in deeply, encompassing himself in her scent. He could feel his bones shift back into place. When his eyes opened again, they were his warm brown.
"There he is." She teased.
He blushed, burying himself into her neck to hide it. "Good night Miss Ayase."
She giggled, "Goodnight dork."
"Am I still the same person you met Miss Ayase?"
Momo quirked an eyebrow, shifting her phone away from her face to glance down at her boyfriend who was resting his head on her stomach. The magazine he was reading lay limp on his chest.
"Does this have something to do with what was bugging you last night?" She asked.
"So you don't think I changed?"
"No duh, of course you changed, probably the most out of any of us."
His expression seemed to wilt, Momo twirled a strand of his hair.
"That's not a bad thing." She was silent for a few more seconds. "Does this have something to do with your powers?"
"Yesterday, I got sprayed in the face by a juice box because I couldn't get rid of my fangs."
She pulled at his hair, "Hey I like your cute little fangs."
Okarun sat up and started to pace along her room. "Does this mean I'm slowly losing control? What if I turn into an evil Yokai?"
Momo sighed, making a show of removing her legs from under the bed covers. Her oversized sweater slid down her one shoulder unveiling her collarbone. He wasn't paying attention to her, his hands fisted in his hair and fiddling with his glasses. A gasp escaped him, almost running head-first into her as she blocked his path.
"You are not going to turn evil."
"I don't want to hurt you, Miss Ayase." He couldn't meet her eyes, his expression filled with guilt.
She grasped both of his hands. "You're stupider than I thought if you think that we would just sit by and watch that happen. I'm always going to be there to knock some sense back into you."
Okarun deflated like a balloon, resting his chin on her shoulder as he would usually do in his cursed form. "I guess I'm a little self-conscious."
"There's nothing wrong with expressing your emotions and saying exactly what you feel, and if you're worried about your possessive side...don't."
His mind wandered back to an incident that happened a week ago at school.
"Hey! Looking good Sexy!"
Momo looked up from her phone, Kei and Miko flanking her. "Go choke Meathead."
It did not deter him, if anything it encouraged him to approach the three girls. "You pretty girls waiting for a good-looking guy to sweep you off your feet?"
Kei sighed, "Do you always have to attract such losers Momo?"
Momo growled at her "It's not my fault!" She turned to the guy, "Back off Creep! I have a boyfriend!"
He reached out his arm to rest his hand on the pillar Momo was leaning on."Really? I don't see him."
"Why don't you turn around."
The guy turned his head, to see Okarun, white-knuckling his backpack straps. He laughed, "This nerd?" He turned back to face Momo leaning in unnecessarily close, "He's kidding right?"
A strong hand gripped his shoulder tightly, and he groaned in slight discomfort. It knocked him off balance and away from the three girls.
"You're gonna get it, nerd." He cracked his knuckles.
Momo could see her boyfriend on the verge of transforming. His eyes a blazing red, and the flames licked up his collar.
"Last chance, leave my girlfriend and her friends alone."
The guy answered him by swinging a fist at his face. Using his inhuman speed, he caught his wrist and applied pressure to the joint with his thumb sending the guy straight to his knees. He cried out and whimpered in pain.
Okarun's voice contorted as he fully transformed. "That was the wrong answer."
"I'm sorry! I'm s—sorry! Please let me go!"
He ignored his pleas and instead twisted his head to take stock of his girlfriend. "You okay Momo?"
"I'm fine, I could've handled him you know." Her two friends were speechless beside her. "You can let him go now."
He did as he was told instantly, the guy scrambled off the ground and made a break for it. Momo had to lead him away to calm down. When he reverted back his face flushed bright red and he was stuttering a half-a-dozen apologies at her.
A flick to the middle of his forehead snapped him back to the present. "You still with me dork?"
"So you don't mind it?"
"You're like a big guard dog," She said squeezing both his cheeks between her thumb and the rest of her fingers. "But to me, you'll always be my cute puppy."
Warmth spread across his cheeks as she pushed their faces closer together.
"And if you're worried if I like any of your physical changes..." She reached around him to smack his butt. "I really like them."
His surprised yelp had him turning red all over. "Miss Ayase!"
