Work Text:
Hinata knew something was wrong but he couldn’t put his finger on what. He had eaten breakfast with Natsu while their mom was finishing getting ready to go to work. After eating, Hinata took his bike while his mom put Natsu in the car to drive her to her school. Since Karasuno was at the opposite of both Natsu’s school and his mom’s work, the Hinata family parted their way from their home and wished each other a good day.
Hinata pedaled to his school with a weird feeling in his chest. Everything in him was screaming something was wrong but he didn’t know what.
He passed in front of the Sakanoshita Market and the shop was already open. Hinata briefly looked through the window and didn’t see the coach but nearly hit a signpost.
He arrived at school and stopped pedaling when he reached the iron gates. Hinata looked around and frowned. Kageyama was nowhere to be seen, which was weird—really weird.
Kageyama always attended their morning run and morning training.
It was almost an hour later that Kageyama arrived at the gym and Hinata frowned immediately. It’s unusual for his partner to be late.
Hinata jogged toward him while Kageyama apologized for his late to Coach Ukai.
“Are you okay?”
Kageyama glanced at Hinata. “Fine.”
Coach Ukai sighed. “Go warm up, then we will do three versus three games.”
Both of them nodded and Kageyama immediately went warming up. Hinata was unable to take his eyes off him.
Something was off. He knew it. He felt it.
They started playing the three versus three games and Hinata’s worry grew. Kageyama failed not one but five sets.
Tsukishama snorted. “What happened to the King? Did he wake up on the wrong foot?”
What worried Hinata wasn’t that Kageyama missed his sets (it was worrying him) but it’s his attitude.
Kageyama barely responded to Tsukishima and only growled “Leave me alone” which made everyone worry.
Asahi-san and Suga-san asked him multiple times if he was okay and Daichi-san told him to rest.
At the end of training, Hinata waited for Kageyama to finish changing. Usually, Kageyama was faster but it seems his whole body became slow. Every movement was in slow motion and between them Kageyama took a break as if putting his socks on was as tiring as a marathon or an exam.
Kageyama stood up and placed his bag on his shoulder. He passed in front of Hinata whispering. “Come on dumbass.”
Hinata nodded and followed him. They walked in the different hallways that separated them from their English class. Hinata looked around, the passage wasn’t fully crowed yet so he took his courage and brushed his hand against Kageyama’s hand.
Their relationship was fresh, barely two weeks. They hadn’t told anyone yet, neither the teams nor their family.
When Hinata brushed his hand he immediately stopped.
Kageyama’s hand was burning.
Hinata stopped walking and grabbed Kageyama’s sleeve. “Bakayama!”
“What?” Kageyama looked around them and a blush grew on his cheeks. “Are you mad because we didn’t say hello yet?”
Hinata frowned. “What are you talking about?”
Kageyama shifted on his feet. “We were in the middle of the gym, but if you wanted to we could have.”
Suddenly Hinata felt his face burn. “I’m not talking about that.”
“Oh, so you don’t want to?”
Hinata swore in his head and Kageyama that idiot, dared to pout.
Hinata looked around and when he was sure none cared about them he went on his tiptoes and did a small peck on Kageyama’s lips. He looked away his whole face burning. “Good morning idiot.”
Kageyama grabbed Hinata’s uniform and kissed him again. The kiss was messy with too much teeth and nose bumping but Hinata didn’t care. Neither of them had a lot of experience but it was fine, they would learn, together.
Kageyama parted and his face was red too. “Morning to you too I guess dumbass. Now hurry up we’re going to be late.”
Kageyama turned on his heels and walked again. It took Hinata a minute before jolting and ran after his boyfriend.
Kageyama’s lips always manage to distract him.
He forgot what he wanted to say but he will probably remember later.
During the rest of the day, Hinata only thinks of Kageyama’s warm lips and hands.

Hinata woke up hearing his phone vibrating on the nightstand. He cracked an eye and looked at his alarm clock.
3:54
Hinata frowned and picked up his phone. He answered the call without looking at the contact’s name.
“Hello?”
“I threw up.”
Hinata frowned. He looked at his contact’s name and put back his phone against his ear. “Kageyama? Are you okay?”
“I threw up.”
Hinata’s eyes widened and he started to panic when he heard something that sounded like a sob.
“My head hurts and I’m cold and I threw up. I don’t know what to do.”
“Okay.” Hinata nodded to himself. “Okay. It’s going to be okay. Can you wake your parents?”
“They’re not here, they’re in France for work. I don’t have anyone. Please. Shoyou, I don’t know what to do.”
Hinata nodded but remember Kageyama couldn’t see him. “I’m coming Tobio.”
“No, it’s late and you could get sick-”
“I’ll wear a mask don’t worry. I’m coming.”
Hinata left his bed and put on a pair of socks. He didn’t have time to dress, his boyfriend needed him. He slowly opened his door and walked carefully in the hallway. He went down the stairs without a sound avoiding the fifth step that made noise.
Hinata put his phone between his ear and shoulder. “I’m leaving, I should be there in forty minutes, thirty if I pedal fast.” His voice was low, Natsu was asleep upstairs but their mom slept close to the living room. His mom was tired with her two jobs trying to have enough money for the three of them. He couldn’t wake her up.
“No, listen I- I just need to know what I should do. It’s the first time I’m sick and thrown up, I- I just don’t know what to do, you don’t have to come-”
“I’m coming Tobio, I-”
“What are you doing?”
Hinata froze. He could hear Kageyama’s voice through his phone but he couldn’t speak. He slowly turned on his heels and saw his mom standing in the middle of their living room in pajamas rubbing the sleep away from her brown eyes and her orange hair was messy.
“I- I, Mom-”
“Shoyou, I think I’m going to throw up again.”
His mom frowned. “Is everything alright Sho?”
Hinata hears Kageyama throwing up and no everything is not alright. His boyfriend whom his mom doesn’t know of is sick as hell, it’s three in the morning and his mom is awake.
So no. Everything is definitely not alright.
Hinata tried to smile. “Everything is fine mom, go back to sleep.”
His mom frowned deeper. “If everything is alright then why are you wearing your coat and trying to put your shoes on,” she tilted her head, “are you on the phone?”
Hinata swallowed the lump in his throat. He didn’t know what to do and was scared.
As a child, his mom told him he could tell her everything especially when he didn’t know what to do or was scared.
So he just told.
“Tobio is sick and throwing up and his parents aren’t home and I don’t know what to do Mom.”
His mom smiled but he could only see tiredness in her eyes. “Okay, It’s going to be okay. Tell Tobio we are on our way.”
Hinata nodded and saw his mom going upstairs.
“Shoyou?”
Hinata blinked. “I’m here, we are on our way, it’s going to be okay.”
“We?”
Hinata chewed his bottom lip. Tobio was going to be so mad. “My mom woke up, we’re coming it’s fine.”
“No! I’m better, I’m fine, I-” Then Kageyama started to cough and it was bad. Really bad.
“Are you okay?” Hinata looked back at the stairs but didn’t see his mom. “Tobio?”
Then Hinata heard footsteps coming from the stairs and saw his mom holding Natsu in her arms wrapped in her blanket.
“Put your coat properly Shoyou and don’t forget your scarf and sweetie can you grab my keys?”
Hinata blinked and blinked again but no, his mom was really holding his sister still asleep in her arms. “Mom, why are you holding Natsu?”
His mom frowned, “Well I can’t leave her alone at home so she’s coming with us, she will sleep on the couch, come on Baby we need to leave to see Tobio.”

Fortunately, the road was quick. Haru kept glancing at her children. Shoyou was on the passenger seat next to her and his legs kept bouncing and his fingers kept twitching. Kageyama had hung up when they climbed in the car to throw up again.
Haru looked at Natsu through the mirror and was behind them still sleeping. Since she was a toddler, Natsu had the ability to sleep everywhere even if it was noisy.
She rubbed the sleep away from her eyes, thankfully Kageyama’s house was only twenty minutes away by car.
Poor Kageyama. She couldn’t imagine the panic when he woke up throwing up. Haru hoped he was okay.
Haru was troubled. Shouyou had told her Kageyama’s parents weren’t home and she wondered where they were and how could they leave their son alone by night, even less sick.
Since her husband left home leaving her alone with her two beautiful, wonderful children, Haru had to work twice as hard to make sure they had food on their plates and a roof above their head but she never, ever let them alone at night.
Never.
Now that she was thinking about it, she never met Kageyama’s parents. Not at school for parent-teacher meetings or during the volleyball games. She had grown friends with Mrs. Tsukishima and Saeko was kind enough to pick up Natsu from school when Haru couldn’t. Coach Ukai had given her all the nutriment diet for the boys and told her he was just a phone call away just like Takeda-sensei. She wasn’t close to Mr. and Mrs. Yamaguchi since she only met them twice during the spring tournament but Mrs. Yamaguchi promised to go to the café next to her house with Mrs. Tsukishima and Sakeo.
She chewed her bottom lip and turned in the alley Shouyou pointed. Haru hoped Kageyama was okay. He was a discreet but polite boy. He always helped Hinata and when he came to their house he was kind and patient with Natsu and even set for her in their garden. Once during a sleepover, even insisted on doing the dishes while Hinata was preparing his futon.
Haru parked her car in front of the Kageyama’s house and picked Natsu up while Shoyou knocked on the door.
Haru adjusted the blanket around Natsu. It was freezing outside and the snow had started to fall again. At least Natsu will be too busy playing in the snow rather than worrying about why she woke up in Kageyama’s house.
Haru was so happy it was Friday night she could cry.
The door opened slowly letting Kayama’s appear in the doorway. He looked at them and Haru wanted nothing more than to hug that child.
His eyes were glassy and red, his hair was messy and his skin pale. He was wearing his pajamas and Haru was sure he had vomit on his shirt.
She saw his eyes watering and his bottom lip tremble. “I told you not to come.”
Before Haru could talk, Shoyou talked still low not wanting to wake his sister. “But since when I listen? Also, you should know by now that Hinata never listens. It’s a family thing.”
Haru nodded. “Hi Kageyama, don’t worry we have our mask we won’t get sick. Can we enter so I can put Natsu on the couch?”
Kageyama looked at her and tried not to let out a sob. “I threw up.”
“I know,” she smiled, “it’s going to be okay Tobio don’t worry.”
Kageyama nodded and stepped aside, letting the Hinata family enter. Haru put Natsu on the couch and in the corner of her eye she saw Shoyou putting on his surgical mask. Once Haru was sure Natsu was comfortable and still asleep but put on her mask too.
Kageyama looked at her, “I threw up on the bed. I’m sorry.”
“It’s okay, did you take a shower or medicine?”
Kageyama shook his head and rubbed his eyes, wiping his tears away.
“It’s okay Tobio,” Haru smiled, “Sho, sweetie, can you prepare something like a chicken soup?”
Shoyou nodded, “On it!”
Kageyama tilted his head. “Chicken soup?”
Haru nodded. “Nothing is better to cure sickness than chicken soup and comfort.” she took Kageyama’s hand. “Can you show me your room?” She put her hand on his forehead. “You’re burning up, we’re going to see what you can take okay? And you could also take a shower you will feel better after that.”
Kageyama nodded. “Thank you. Thank you for coming.”
Haru smiled. Kageyama looked so young, he was her boy’s age after all, a baby, and Haru would always come for one of her babies.
“Of course,” She brushed his dark hair, “I’ll always come for you.”
An hour and a half later Kageyama took his shower, drank the soup Shoyou made, and was back in bed with fresh sheets Haru changed and took his meds.
Haru brought the blanket to Kageyama’s chin and the poor boy was already half asleep.
She brushed his hair away from his forehead. “Sleep well.”
Kageyama absently nodded. “Thank you, Mother.”
Haru froze and felt her eyes watering. She took down her mask and put a kiss on Tobio’s forehead. “Sleep well, baby.”
— — —
Haru cracked her back. Sleeping on a chair wasn’t the best but she couldn’t leave Kageyama’s side. What if he woke up sick again and was scared because he was alone again?
Shoyou had slept on the couch with his sister and like Haru thought Natsu was over the moon when she saw the Kagaeyma’s garden full of snow and declared she had to make a snowman.
She climbed the stairs holding the bowl of soup, hoping Tobio was feeling better. Haru was about to enter when she saw her son in the glimpse of the open door.
“You’re going to get sick dumbass.”
“I want my good morning kiss.”
Haru slightly frowned. She knew something was going on between the two boys. She had saw the brushing hands under the tables during meals or study dates. She saw the long hugs before Kageyama left their house or last night when they arrived. She saw the blushing on their cheeks and the shifty looks.
But she didn’t know they had acknowledged their feelings.
“Fine but if you’re sick idiot you can’t complain.”
Shoyou nodded and Haru turned on his heels and walked down the hallway leaving the two teens alone. She smiled when she heard Shoyou’s voice softly said.
“I love you Tobio.”
And she smiled more when she heard Tobio’s response.
“I love you Shoyou.”
Her boys were going to be fine but Haru would still call Coach Ukai to let him know Kageyama’s parents weren’t home and their boy needed a guardian and she was sure the coach would love to take the role.
