The monitor’s rhythmic beeps and Jeonghan’s faint breathing filled the room. The doctors had told that he didn't have more than a month left to live now, but Seungkwan refused to believe it. He wouldn't let go of Jeonghan so easily. Jeonghan was not just a flatmate, he was his brother, his family. Jeonghan was always there like a sturdy tree, like a cool breeze on a hot summer morning, like the first sip of water that quenches your thirst. He was everything to Seungkwan and there was no way he was going to let anything happen to him.
Even now, Seungkwan sat by his side, holding onto his hand tightly, praying to all the Gods above to spare his hyung’s life. Day and night Seungkwan would spend his time next to Jeonghan's bed, talking to him even though he never responded, tending to him, and making sure everything was provided to him immediately without even a second of delay. Seungkwan wished upon the countless stars in the sky, pleading with them to bring his hyung back to him, to make all his pain go away. And yet, Jeonghan laid in the bed, with countless tubes attached to his frail body, trying to keep him alive.
Jeonghan stood in a field. The velvety scent of lavender enveloped him like a warm, soft blanket. The beautiful lavender flowers swayed to the wind’s soft melody, scattering its scent everywhere. He stood there, in the middle of the field with a bouquet of peonies in his hand. The vibrant colours of the peonies, a stark contrast to the pale purple of the lavenders. He was wearing a suit. It was a beautiful, creamy white and had small, pink cherry blossoms embroidered into the tips of his sleeves and pants. It went perfectly well with his long blonde hair.
He had no idea where he was or how he had gotten there, but somehow he felt a deep sense of familiarity with the place. A feeling of yearning burnt deep within him as he stood there staring at the sun setting in the distance. A soft smile made its way onto his pale pink lips as he heard a familiar melody being played from somewhere within the field. He now knew why he was here.
His footsteps instinctively followed the music as he made his way across the field. The closer he got to the music, he could make out the shape of a beautiful arc, elegantly decorated with various shades of orchids and carnations. A few more steps and he realized it was an altar, a wedding altar. It was gorgeous, adorned with pink, red and purple flowers cascading from it. As he made his way closer to the altar he could make out the figure of a man standing there, as if he was waiting for someone. As he reached the pathway that led down to the altar, he realized the man at the altar was waiting for him.
He wore a royal blue suit with the same small, pink cherry blossoms embroidered into the tips of his suit’s sleeves and his pants. He too was holding a bouquet, a bouquet of daffodils. When Jeonghan reached the end of the pathway that led to the altar, the man turned to look at Jeonghan as if he had been waiting for this movement. He smiled at Jeonghan, a radiant smile that could light up even the darkest places on earth. But, Jeonghan froze.
How can this be possible? The man in front of him, the smile that he cherished the most, the smile he thought he had lost forever. He was seeing it now, he was seeing him now. But how? His grip on the bouquet tightened and he blinked his eyes rapidly, to make sure he was not imagining it. But, the man still stood in front of him, smiling at him and beckoning him closer.
“Jihoon.” the name came out of his mouth in a whisper as he moved closer to take Jihoon’s hand in his.
“Hyung, I have been waiting for you.” Jihoon said, the smile never leaving his face.
“I’m so glad you finally came. I thought you would never come.”
“How could I ever leave you Jihoon. I’d rather stop breathing than be away from you for even a minute. I’m sorry I made you wait so long.”
Seungkwan didn't know when he had fallen asleep, but he was awoken by the loud beeping of the monitor. Something was not right, the monitor wasn't supposed to beep like that. He looked up and Jeonghan’s pulse was plumating at the speed of light. Seungkwan immediately pushed the emergency button and rushed back to Jeonghan’s side, holding his bony hand in his.
“Hyung, please. You cannot do this. Please don't leave me alone. Please” he desperately begged, trying to do anything he could to get Jeonghan to open his eyes.
And he did. Jeonghan finally opened his eyes after three whole months and even managed a weak smile at Seungkwan. Seungkwan's grip on Jeonghan's hand tightened as he looked at him with hopeful eyes. But, all he said was, 'I'm sorry Kwan-ah, but he is waiting for me.', before the monitor’s beep turned to a static and his hands went limp in Seungkwan’s hold.
