Work Text:
“Hey Tae…”
Jungkook hadn’t spoken those words for a long time. Had not called out to his lover for so long. But today he had decided he would work up the courage and do this.
“Hello! Kim Taehyung speaking…hello?...”
That voice
Jungkook felt needles pricking his skin, he felt his heart beating out of his chest, his eyes filled up with tears and his mouth opened to utter a silent sob.
It had been ages since he had heard that voice.
“Okay, okay this is still my voicemail! You caught me again, especially if it’s you, Kookie! For some reason I can’t pick up the call, so if you could be so kind and leave a voicemail…although I would prefer it if you text...just saying...hahaha okay!”
BEEP
He missed him. He missed his voice, his antics. All of it, he missed all of it.
“Hey Tae..,” he started softly, “I’ve missed you, do you miss me? I know what I did was unimaginable and unforgivable but can you please not hate me. I could never handle you getting angry at me, you know that.”
Jungkook heaves a sigh to control his tears. Why was this so difficult? Wasn’t talking to Tae always so easy?
But he was not talking to Taehyung, was he? He was leaving him a voicemail…because that was all he could do.
Because Taehyung wasn’t here to pick up the call.
Because Taehyung was dead.
“I didn’t mean to forget, Tae. In fact, I came home late because I was out looking for rings to propose to you with. But that fight…”
Jungkook's day had not been going well.
A client at work had gotten angry with one of the workers and had completely trashed the whole place. His favourite coffee place had been closed. It was raining and he had forgotten his umbrella. And he couldn’t find a beautiful enough ring to propose to his amazing boyfriend, his Taehyung.
He got back home expecting a happy Tae but what he got was a crying face screaming at him about forgetting their anniversary. He tried to explain without revealing the surprise but all he got was an angrier boyfriend assuming the wrong things.
So they fought. And they said stuff to each other that they did not mean.
Until Taehyung decided he had enough and told Jungkook, “I’m leaving.”
And Jungkook did try, he tried to stop him but Taehyung wouldn’t stop.
And then the rain started pouring down.
And the roads drowned.
In the distance, the car lights flickered. And Jungkook tried, he tried calling Taehyung, tried telling him to stop running away.
But it was too late.
So now he sits here, talking to the voicemail of his dead lover, in hopes of hearing him and telling him all the unsaid words.
One last time…
Suddenly, Jungkook hears crack in the call. The sound of someone picking up.
And then he hears a voice, a voice so familiar, a voice so beautiful, a voice he has loved for ages…
He hears Taehyung on the call, he hears his dead lover’s voice on the other end calling out to him…
”Jungkookie…save me…”
