Holding You Through The Night

Summary:

A slight alternative take on 4x13 and 4x15.

Notes:

First off, I hope everyone is hanging in there. Personally, I'm a bundle of stress, anxiety, and rage most days, but writing Miggy fic helps quiet a lot of that, so I won't be going anywhere from this site anytime soon.

Anyway, I love season 4. I think it might be the best written season of the series, (it's close with S1), and in my mind the second half is phenomenal. BUT, it also frustrates me to no end that there were SO MANY missed opportunities for Miggy to have a real and honest conversation about their feelings. I get why they waited until the season finale, but I still feel a little robbed. 4x13 and 4x15 are my favorite episodes (besides the finale) of the season, and I wanted to explore the missed opportunities that came with them. I hope it's a nice little break from reality for everyone.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Juliet had spent the last ten minutes staring off into space while the business’ accounting program sat open on her laptop. Maya had been right that this job had cost them, and therefore the books definitely needed careful going over. But did she really need to do it right then? Couldn’t she have just waited until the morning? Couldn’t she have just allowed herself a relaxing night in the guest house watching a movie and enjoying a beer with her partner?

Upon returning from Kenya Juliet had found herself disappointed that Thomas had found someone else to spend time with. Now instead of them hanging out after cases he was getting dressed up to see his girlfriend. Which didn’t make her jealous. Nope. Absolutely not. No way. Plus she’d still been with Ethan, she should’ve been more concerned about making her own relationship work long-distance. But now they were both single again, and the thought of spending time alone with Thomas made Juliet’s belly flutter in a way it hadn’t before.

Or are you just finally starting to accept what that fluttering has always meant?

Juliet shook her head and bit her lip. She’d been mortified that Thomas had heard her having one of her sexy dreams, even more when he’d told her he never had those types of dreams about her. But she’d seen the way he looked at her the day before when she asked about his fridge. In fact, she’d seen the way he looked at her after the MI-6 fiasco and numerous times before. Like she was the only person in the world. Like he didn’t have anywhere else to be than with her. Like he could spend hours just watching her. Could Thomas Magnum have romantic feelings towards her? And was refilling his fridge and buying candles and asking her to stay to watch a movie his way of gently easing her into the fact? More so, did she share those feelings?

She’d been having those ‘sexy dreams’ for weeks now, but had at first just chalked them up to stress. She’d come home from Kenya, had MI-6 on her back, broke up with Ethan, and then dealt with her former employer. The single constant during all of that was her partner; her only point of comfort. It made sense then that her subconscious had morphed all that stress into something more lighthearted. But she remembered how it felt to wake up after that first dream. The bitter disappointment of not being in Thomas’ arms, of not feeling his lips press kiss after kiss to her lips, her neck, and lower.

“Oh, bloody hell.”

Juliet threw her head back against her chair.

This could ruin everything.

Her rational side berated her for even going there, but her heart, a quieter but still firm voice spoke up.

Or it could be everything you thought you’d never have again. It could even be more than what you once had.

Juliet inhaled deep, then exhaled slowly. She wouldn’t be able to figure this all out tonight, but one thing she knew for sure was that she’d rather be in the guest house with Thomas instead of alone in the office.

Thomas had been disappointed when Higgy had declined his invitation, but he understood. Thinking back, however, he was a little worried he might have overwhelmed her with the fridge and candle thing. She did her best to hide it, but he noticed the disappointment in her voice when she asked if he and Lia were going to give it another try, as well as her surprise at his answer. If he was being honest, he hadn’t been fully into Lia for a while, maybe ever.

She’d been a nice distraction, but he knew exactly what he was doing when he got involved with her. But then, Higgy was suddenly home and acting weird and wasn’t letting him in. He tried to keep it together, until he said those things in the wine cellar while they were both seeing other people, and he’d been terrified all the way to the airport that he’d messed up. Instead, he awoke the next day to find that there was no more Ethan, but she was still hiding something. The night he’d followed her he wanted so badly to tell her how much she meant to him, really meant to him.

Thomas grinned, coming to the moment  he couldn’t stop replaying in his mind during the past few weeks. Their late night stakeout and the subsequent sexy dream. God. He about lost his mind when she’d said his name like that , especially with that accent of hers. But Lia was still somewhere in the background at that point, and so he tried to help make her less embarrassed by perhaps not being completely truthful about whether or not he had similar dreams.

But now? With them both single he didn’t have to try so hard to hide the heart eyes and the gentle teasing. He felt them returning to how they’d been pre-Ethan. And maybe, just maybe, one day he’d be able to talk her into trying something more. But until then, he was content being the only man in her life and her best friend. He promised himself though, if another Dr. Shah appeared he’d fight for her this time.

He settled on the couch after the call with Maya and tried to push all thoughts about the fixer from his mind. They’d surely cross paths again one day, but tonight he just wanted to let his mind go. Maybe think about what he’d eventually tell his best friend when he told her how he felt.

He’d finally landed on a movie when the front door opened. Thomas turned and couldn’t stop the smile that crossed his face when he saw Higgy standing in the doorway. She’d changed into yoga pants, a soft tshirt, and a pair of flip flops. Her eyes were a little wide, and a hesitant smile was on her face.

“Higgy, hey. You came back.”

Juliet nodded as she shuffled further into the house.

“Um, yes. I realized that a night of accounting wasn’t as appealing as I originally thought. I thought I might come join you instead. If the offer still stands?”

“Of course.” Thomas was suddenly up off the couch and in front of her. “It always stands. You know — you’re always welcome here, Juliet.”

That fluttering was back, and she wasn’t imagining the longing in Thomas’ eyes. She could also see the hesitation; he didn’t want to scare her off with any overt show of emotion. It just made her appreciate him even more.

“Thank you, Thomas.”

They stood with their eyes locked on one another for a few more seconds before Thomas broke away to grab Juliet a beer.

“Go get comfortable, Higgy. I’ve got some pretzels too, if you want some?”

She nodded and situated herself on one side of the couch while Thomas fetched her drink and snacks. Juliet fiddled with her hands, then reminded herself that she had no reason to be nervous. This was Thomas. She’d spent countless nights on this same couch watching movies, drinking Coops. This was no different than any of those other nights. She was pulled from her thoughts when Thomas reappeared.

“You want to pick a movie?” He handed her the beer and set the pretzels on the table before settling himself back into the couch cushions.

“No, I’m sure whatever you’ve chosen is fine. I could use some mindless entertainment after the last few days we’ve had.”

“Mindless?! That’s what you’re gonna call my movie preferences?”

“Oh please, you know as well as I do your preferences in entertainment don’t require any higher intellect to follow.” She softened her words with a small smile that Thomas returned.

“Alright, smartass. Just get comfortable.”

Juliet smirked and curled into the corner of the couch. She briefly wondered what it would be like to sit pressed against Thomas’ side; to lay her head against his shoulder and feel his arms encase her in warmth and safety, but figured that was better saved for another day after she got her thoughts and feelings in better order.

As the movie wore on the partners shifted and rearranged themselves. Thomas kicked his feet up onto the coffee table and slid further down the couch, while Juliet found herself horizontal with her knees curled up to almost her chest.

“Is that comfortable, Higgy?” He frowned at her position all folded in on herself.

Before she could answer he reached a hand out and tapped a foot.

“Here, stretch your legs out.”

Without even thinking, Juliet uncurled her legs and promptly kicked Thomas in the thigh.

“Oh, sorry.”

“S’okay. C’mere.” Without missing a beat, Thomas lifted her feet and deposited them into his lap. His fingers immediately began rubbing circles into the soft skin of her ankles. Suddenly he froze as his brain finally caught up to his body.

‘Just partners’ didn’t give each other foot massages. That was something saved for boyfriends. Or someone who wanted to be someone's boyfriend. Juliet’s heart skipped a beat at that particular thought, but instead of the accompanying fear she expected to feel she only felt hope.

“That feels good.” She said quickly, voice low, hoping that he wouldn't pull his hands away. She held his gaze, and hoped he could tell she was being sincere. She watched him tilt his head as if to say, are you sure this is okay? Juliet nodded and pressed her feet just slightly harder against his hands. Thomas didn’t need to be told twice, and absolutely wasn’t about to turn down the opportunity to just feel his partner’s ridiculously soft skin under his fingers.

Thomas didn’t waste another second before resuming his gentle ministrations; making sure to address every square inch of her feet. Juliet sighed in contentment, and let herself be lulled by Thomas’ strong hands. He hit a particular sore spot on the arch of her left foot, and she couldn’t stop the little groan that erupted from deep in her throat. He paused then went back to the spot with a gentler touch.

“Right here?” He asked, pressing slightly with his thumbs.

Juliet nodded, and rolled to her back so she could watch him.

“You’re quite good at this.” She would deny forever the jealous twinge she felt run through her thinking about his hands on other women’s feet. He chuckled, as if reading her thoughts.

“Actually, I used to do this for my mom.” The corner of his mouth quirked up. “She worked long hours on her feet, but she was also a runner and was always soaking her feet in epsom salts and fancy oils. This was my way of just showing a little bit of appreciation for everything she did for us. It was the least I could do since I wasn’t always the greatest son in the world.”

As he talked, one of Thomas’ hands slid away from her foot and began running long, soothing strokes over her shin and calf.

“I have a hard time believing someone as honorable and who loves their ohana like you do could ever have treated their mum poorly.”

Thomas made a disagreeing noise, but never paused his massaging.

“Thomas, yesterday you literally attempted to lead the police away from me so that I could escape. If that’s not honorable, I don’t know what is.”

“I knew if you got caught it could affect your citizenship. And I wasn’t about to let that happen.”

His eyes were soft, and he spoke like it was the most obvious thing in the world. Juliet melted into the couch.

“It didn’t work, but everything’s okay now.” He continued. “I’d have figured something else out anyway.”

“I know you would have, Thomas.” She shimmied the tiniest bit closer. “You’re also making my point for me.”

He laughed and helped her situate herself better.

“Yeah well, I’d think you’d know by now there’s nothing I wouldn’t do for you, Juliet.”

The air in the room suddenly felt thick with possibility. Juliet knew Thomas was being completely sincere and wasn’t exaggerating in the slightest. She knew they were nearing the precipice of what had been building between them. She looked into Thomas’ eyes and saw that it would be safe to fall, he would catch her. She also saw that he would wait as long as she needed. In return she tried to convey to him that she was almost there.

“I know you would, Thomas. And—I hope you know I’d do the same for you. Although, I don’t know how I could ever repay you for everything you’ve done for me over the years. No one has ever worked so hard to get to know me, and simply be there for me.”

She was on her way to emotional overdrive, and the desire to retreat to the main house and regroup was strong. But she reminded herself there was no reason to be afraid, no need to hide from Thomas. He somehow seemed to sense this.

“Hey, I know. It’s an honor to know Juliet Higgins has my back.” He squeezed her legs again, one thumb still rubbing circles into her ankle bone. “Thanks for hanging out tonight, Higgy. This has been nice, just the two of us.”

“Thank you for inviting me. I think it’s about my bedtime, however. I want to get up early and take a look at those books.”

Thomas chuckled, tapped her legs, and begrudgingly removed his hands. They both immediately missed the contact.

“I’ll walk you out.”

Normally Juliet would scoff at that, but she found herself wanting to prolong her time with Thomas for as long as possible. Instead of arguing, she allowed him to just be sweet.

“Do you, uh, wanna come over for breakfast in the morning?” Thomas asked, opening the door. “I can make pancakes?”

“That sounds lovely.” Juliet’s stomach was fluttering again, and this time she didn’t try to fight it. It only increased when Thomas’ face lit up after her acceptance.

“Yeah? Just come over when you’re hungry. Even if I’m still on the water.”

Juliet nodded, then before she could overthink it, reached out and laid a hand on his forearm.

“I’ll see you then. Goodnight, Thomas.”

“Night, Higgy.”

It had been several days since they’d had their movie night and breakfast the next morning. Things had clearly shifted, but they still hadn’t taken that final leap. Looks were held even longer, hands brushed against backs and arms with more frequency, and teasing remarks held just a touch more flirtiness than before. Then just as everything seemed to be headed where they both wanted, Thomas was poisoned and Juliet felt like her entire world was crashing down, again. She’d held it together as best she could, but now that Thomas was safe she felt herself teetering on the precipice of absolutely losing it.

Once the antidote had been retrieved and administered, the ohana gathered at the guest house. After the long, stressful day nobody was too keen on letting Thomas out of their sight, none more so than Juliet. Since the moment they walked through the front door, she’d barely left his side for longer than a few minutes. Noelani had been waiting for them upon their return, and after getting the antidote applied, she started an IV to help flush the toxin out of Thomas’ system faster. She then gave him a thorough once over.

Afterwards, Rick and TC helped Thomas upstairs so he could shower and change into athletic shorts and a Tigers shirt. While they did that, Juliet ran to the main house to do the same thing. She hurried through the routine, barely managing to keep the tears at bay when Zeus and Apollo pressed against her legs in a way that indicated they knew something was wrong.

“It’s alright, lads. Everything’s fine now.” She rubbed their heads just long enough to reassure them, then rushed back across the lawn.

She’d only been back for ten minutes before the guys reappeared coming down the stairs. Thomas was safely encased in between Rick and TC who each had arms around his back ensuring he was stable. Juliet took a step in their direction, but didn’t want to crowd them. Instead she busied herself with fluffing pillows on the couch and grabbing a blanket from one of the baskets. Noelani had said that Thomas might experience a few side-effects over the next 48-72 hours, one of them being chills.

“Guys, I’m okay,” Thomas complained, but didn’t try to escape Rick and TC’s reach. He allowed them to lead him to the couch where he all but collapsed into his pillow pile. He gently patted the spot next to him when he looked up into Juliet’s eyes. She didn’t hesitate to perch herself next to him, much to the amusement of Rick and TC who wisely kept any comments to themselves. Juliet draped the blanket over his lap, tucking the ends around his hips before stilling.

“Kumu and Jin ran out to get some food,” Juliet said, voice sounding stronger than she felt. “They should be back soon.”

Thomas nodded then noticed how Juliet kept wringing her hands together. He wanted to reach out and cover them with his own, but didn’t want to startle or embarass her, especially with the guys sitting just feet from them. He opted to lighten the mood.

“They’re uh—not bringing sushi, right?”

“Hey man, just because you had one bad experience with it doesn’t mean the rest of us can’t enjoy it.” Rick teased and suddenly the tension lifted. They all laughed, genuine laughs, and settled back into their usual dynamic while they waited. While the guys gently, but firmly told Thomas he was never to get in between two rival gangs again, Juliet took the time to study him.

His complexion was much paler than normal, but was a little better than earlier that day. Juliet noticed his breathing was steady, but he was still having to take deep deliberate breaths. She also saw the small tremor in his hands, which she hoped just meant he needed to eat something and drink some water.

“Water,” she suddenly blurted out. “You need to be drinking water.”

Before anyone could say anything else, Juliet hopped up from the couch and practically ran to the kitchen. Thomas checked out of the conversation and watched his partner tear open the fridge to locate a bottle of water for him. Because he was watching Higgy, he missed Rick and TC exchanging glances at Thomas’ positively smitten look. Juliet returned almost as quickly as she’d left, somehow managing to sit even closer to Thomas. She twisted the cap off and held it up for him to take.

“Thanks, Higgy.” He drank half the bottle before needing to breathe.

“Easy, TM,” TC admonished as Thomas gasped for air. “No one’s going to take that from you.”

“Yeah, and if anyone tried I think Jules would murder them.”

Thomas chuckled, then remembered Rick’s words as they’d taken him up for his shower. How Juliet almost did murder a man trying to get him the antidote.

That’s my girl, he’d thought, stepping into the shower, then chastised himself. Not yet she’s not. Not if you don’t tell her how you feel, you big dummy.

He promised himself that was a conversation they were going to have ASAP.

Thomas chuckled. He noticed a faint blush across Juliet’s cheeks, and thought she was so adorable it was unbelievable.

“That imbecile was never in any real danger of being murdered today,” Juliet said in her haughtiest voice. “Perhaps a broken bone or two, but nothing more than that.”

“Either way,” Thomas said, turning to his partner. “I appreciate the sentiment, Higgy. Helped save my ass.”

Juliet twisted her hands in her lap again and this time Thomas didn’t stop himself from reaching out and covering them. He felt her tense for a second before finally relaxing. Rick and TC watched the exchange with open interest, both hoping their presence wouldn’t spook the private investigators into retreating into their shells. However, everyone was pulled from their thoughts when the front door opened and the sound of Kumu and Jin bustling into the guest house with bags full of food reached their ears. Thomas went to stand up, but Juliet quickly laid a hand against his thigh.

“Stay. I’ll get it.”

Too tired to argue, Thomas just nodded and smiled up at his partner who quickly dashed off once more.

“What?” He asked when his eyes landed on Rick and TC. Both men were grinning.

“Nothing.” TC shook his head. “We’re just glad you’re okay, brother.”

“And,” Rick added. “We hope this unfortunate day will remind you how important it is to not take life for granted.”

Thomas furrowed his brows until both guys shot pointed looks to where Juliet had gone and understanding dawned on him. He sighed then nodded.

“I know. I’m on it. I swear.”

The ohana ended up staying a few more hours, mostly for their own peace of mind. When it became apparent though that Thomas needed rest everyone said their goodbyes and promised to check in in the morning. Juliet, however, had already decided she was going to hang around a bit longer.

“I’ll be right back, Thomas,” she said as everyone else stood to leave. He nodded, and to her surprise, looked relieved she was staying.

She followed everyone to the door then stayed Kumu with a hand on her arm.

“Would you mind taking care of the lads tonight? I want to stay here for a little longer.”

Kumu shot her a motherly smile.

“Don’t worry, Juliet. I’ll handle them. You just make sure Thomas is taken care of.”

With the door finally shut and locked, Juliet rested her forehead against it and took a moment to collect herself. She wasn’t sure how much longer she could hold it together, but she didn’t want to leave Thomas just yet. With one last deep breath, Juliet padded back to the couch where she found Thomas trying to adjust himself and his pillows.

“Can I get you anything else?”

Thomas shook his head.

“No, I’m good. Just trying to find a way of sitting that doesn’t make me ache.”

Juliet sat back down, wanting to help but not knowing how.

“What can I do? How can I help make you comfortable? Do you want more pillows? Or a heating pad?”

“Can I just—” Thomas stopped shifting and hesitated. Juliet saw his internal struggle, and didn’t ever want him to worry about asking her for something he wanted or needed from her.

“Thomas, you know you can ask me anything.” She laid a hand against his arm.

“Can I please just hold you for a minute?” His eyes were soft and shining. “That's all I could think about trying to survive today, Higgy. That I’ve never gotten to hold you for real. I’m sorry if that’s too much for—”

He didn’t get to finish because Juliet moved into his arms like it was the most natural thing in the world. She situated herself carefully, trying not to put too much pressure on his chest, tucking her head into his neck and nuzzling his jawline. Thomas froze for a split second before wrapping his arms around her and pulling her as close as physically possible.

Thomas sighed in relief. The antidote might have been working its way through his veins, but it was the woman in his arms who was going to heal him. After a few moments, however, he realized she was shaking.

“Higgy?” He angled his head to look down at her and was shocked when he saw tears pooling in her eyes and her struggling to stifle her cries. “Hey hey hey. Higgy. What’s wrong? It’s okay. You’re okay.”

A broken sob burst forth from her, and Juliet lost the battle against the tears. The hand on his chest twisted in his shirt and held on for dear life. Thomas found every bit of strength he currently had, and gathered her even closer. He tugged her legs until they draped across his thighs and she was essentially situated in his lap.

“Thomas, your breathing—” She managed in between hiccups. He just tightened his hold.

“Is fine. I’m fine, Higgy. Having you here helps more than anything.”

“Thomas—”

“Shh, Juliet. It’s okay.”

“It’s not though.” She swiped her hand under her eyes before returning it to Thomas’ chest. “There are things I need to tell you. Things that I almost didn’t get to say.”

Her voice broke again and Thomas’ heart jumped in his chest. But this time it wasn’t because of the poison. He rubbed circles into her back and pressed a kiss against her hair.

“I know. There are things I need to tell you too. Things I should have told you a long time ago.”

Juliet’s breath came on a gasping sob as she attempted to get herself under control. If she was about to tell Thomas how she felt she wanted to be at least somewhat composed. Finally, she took one last breath and pulled her head back just far enough to look Thomas in the eye. She mustered a watery smile and lifted a shaky hand to cup his cheek.

“I love you, Thomas.” She took another deep breath and the ache in her chest disappeared. It helped that Thomas was smiling and still rubbing her back in long, soothing strokes. “I think I have for a long time, and I’m tired of being afraid of those feelings. I’m sorry it’s taken another near death experience for me to say it. You make me feel things that I haven’t felt for years; you make me feel things I haven’t felt ever.

“Juliet.” His smile had somehow gotten even bigger. “I love you, too. So much, and for so long. I—I wanted to tell you when you were shot, but then—”

“No, don’t say his name. It’s just you and me here. Just you and me from now on, if you want me.”

“God yes. More than anything.” He pulled her impossibly closer until their foreheads rested against one another. “You save me, Juliet. You saved me today, but you’ve been saving me since the moment we met.”

Juliet sucked in a breath of air, then tilted her head to press her lips to his. They both melted at the contact. Hands held and stroked, while lips learned their new favorite flavor. Moans drifted out of their mouths as their tongues twined together in a slow dance. But as Thomas tried to take the kiss even deeper he was forced to tear his mouth away and take several deep breaths. He dropped his head back against the couch and sighed in frustration.

“I’ve finally got you in my arms, and I can’t even make out with you properly.”

Juliet giggled and leaned in to kiss his cheek as he caught his breath.

“It’s alright, Thomas. I’d rather you focus on getting better before we do anything too—strenuous.”

Thomas lifted his head and was surprised to see Juliet wearing a positively filthy grin. Her hazel eyes were shot through with gold and blown with lust. He laughed hard enough that he started coughing again.

“I’m okay.” He wheezed, then whined when she managed to extract herself from his embrace. “Higgy! Come back here!”

Juliet rolled her eyes. Apparently, being in a relationship with Thomas didn’t mean he was going to stop being hardheaded. She returned with another water bottle which he greedily drank from as she stood in front of his sitting form, fingers running soothingly through his hair.

“Thanks.”

“You’re welcome. Now, what do you say about getting you put to bed? Your body needs rest, especially if any side effects start manifesting.”

“I say that sounds like a good idea, but only if you’ll stay with me.”

He looked up at her with the look he’d been giving her for years, and Juliet knew she was never going to be able to resist it again. She was amazed she had for so long.

“Of course.” She leaned down for a kiss, then gripped his hands and pulled. “Come on then.”

He followed her dutifully, only pausing at the foot of the stairs to pout.

“Thomas?”

He sighed.

“Can’t make out with you, can’t carry you to bed. I should’ve killed Shima when I had the chance.”

Juliet made a sympathetic noise as heat raced through her.

He needs rest, Juliet. Later. When he’s well.

“But you can hold me in bed, and you can pick out one of your shirts for me to wear.” If someone had told her when she and Thomas had first met she would one day utter those words she would have probably removed their tongue. Her cheeks flushed at Thomas’ obvious delight, and any embarrassment was swept away.

In the bedroom, Thomas grabbed another Tigers shirt from his dresser and pressed it into Juliet’s hands. He urged her to use the bathroom first, while he readied the bed for sleep. Juliet hurriedly changed, brushed her teeth, then splashed some water onto her face.

She hadn’t planned on telling Thomas she loved him tonight, but the idea that another day could pass without him knowing was unthinkable; not after she’d almost lost him. She promised herself from then on at the end of every day Thomas would know exactly how much she loved him, how much he meant to her. She fingered the hem of the shirt he’d given her and couldn’t help but wonder what his reaction would be to seeing her in it. She wasn’t disappointed when she stepped out of the bathroom and Thomas’ eyes lit up with unbridled delight. His eyes drank in the sight of her toned legs bared for him, and wondered if they’d feel as soft as they looked.

He rushed through his nighttime routine, then paused to study himself in the mirror. He was still paler than usual, there were dark circles under his eyes, and he was exhausted. But, he also felt incredibly lucky to not only be alive, but to have had Juliet Higgins tell him she loved him. Originally he planned to talk with her once he was fully healed, but somehow this worked out even better. It was a little unconventional, but then again so were they.

Thomas exited the bathroom and found his wildest dream had finally come true: Juliet in his bed, wearing one of his shirts. She was smiling at something on her phone, and Thomas knew he was so far gone for this woman it was almost funny.

“Everything okay?” He paused next to the bed to remove his shirt before sliding beneath the covers.

Juliet laid her phone on the nightstand then scooted across the bed to him. Thomas reached out and pulled her into his embrace.

“Kumu sent me a picture of the lads. They’re curled around each other in their beds sleeping.”

Thomas chuckled.

“Guess I better start buying them snacks and toys so they don’t maim me when they catch us kissing.”

“We’ll work on it. Although, I don’t think they dislike you as much as you think they do.” She slid her palm across the expanse of his chest, almost giddy over the fact she was allowed to do that now. His skin was a little warmer than she would have liked, but she wasn’t overly concerned. “I think it might help that your scent is going to be all over me from now on.”

“From now on, huh?” He felt her tense for a moment, and hurried to reassure her. The last thing he wanted was for her to second guess herself. “I like the sound of that.”

She relaxed instantly and Thomas shifted his head to kiss her forehead then tilted her head up to him to kiss her properly.

“I’m so glad you’re okay, Thomas.” Juliet whispered into his neck and snuggled impossibly closer. “I love you.”

“I love you too, Juliet.”

“Wake me if you’re not feeling well. Please.”

“I will. I promise. Now sleep. We’ll figure everything else out tomorrow.”

Juliet knew it would take a few days for Thomas to return to 100% health, but she was determined to remain by his side for all of it. She angled her head to press one last kiss to the underside of his jaw, still trying to grasp the fact she was in his arms. She then let herself drift off to sleep where for the first time ever her dreams couldn’t compare to reality.

Notes:

I may eventually come back to this for a second part, complete with smut, but I'm also really happy with the way this one wrapped up. I just needed to get it out of my head so I can work on some Christmas fics without this haunting me.

Thank you forever to everyone who continues to read my stuff. I don't know if you'll ever understand how much all your support means to me, especially now.
