Work Text:

6 in the evening.

Bubble Wrap was waiting for her girlfriend of 6 months, Ukulele, to come pick her up, ever since that message she got from her that said that she was gonna pick her up and take her somewhere.
The shorter woman was sitting on her couch, her legs bouncing from how happy she was as she waited for her girl, her love of her life to take her to that place she was gonna take her to, though Ukulele didn't tell Bubble Wrap, which only got her curious on where she was gonna be taken to. She had gotten ready for this occasion, which she barely ever does, with a teal off-shoulder dress that she found at the clothing store near the edge of downtown, some black leggings, a leather jacket, a pair of black shoes, and also a hair clip that was shaped like a little bubble. Her short, wavy, dark-brown hair (oh no! she doesn't have teal hair?? how unique of me oh nooo!!!!) was combed neatly and her strands shined a soft gold from the dim living room light. She had only eyeliner on in terms of makeup, but the rest of her face is left untouched. The limited makeup did bring out her pale blue eyes, which sparkled a little bit in the dim light. Occasionally, she looks at her mirror that she had in her jacket, and she always took notice of the little dimples that appear whenever she smiles, which, to her girlfriend, was adorable. The freckles on her face were dark on her light tan skin. And her girl had always loved her freckles.
Bubble Wrap was so distracted from looking at her face in the mirror that she didn't notice the knocking on her door until a few seconds later, when the knocking occurred again. She looked up from her mirror to the door, and she puts her mirror back in her pocket and stands up, sweeping any dust on her leggings with her hands and adjusting her hair clip, and then she goes to the peephole, looking through it to see who was knocking.
And it was Ukulele, standing there and smiling.
Bubble Wrap opens the door, and she was able to get a full look at her girlfriend, who was standing in front of her, though she cut herself short because she thought she stared at the taller one for too long and cleared her throat and blushed.
The taller wore a suit that had a yellow trim, and she had a golden bowtie that had little white flowers on it. Her curly, golden-ginger ombre hair was put up into a low ponytail, and the smallest bit of makeup was on her face, particularly some fox eyeliner, and it helped bring out her amber eyes.
She smiled at the shorter one.
"Ready to go?"
Bubble Wrap nods and so Ukulele takes her hand and gets her in the car. It was a sleek black SUV that had no middle or back seats, and in place of where the seats would be was a small bed with a yellow blanket. The entire SUV's interior was covered in soft pink fur too. Ukulele had the SUV custom done by an ex of hers over a year ago, Slipper, who she dated before she went back to dating Bubble Wrap, and Bubble Wrap had forgiven Ukulele, and so they had been back together for six months. Ukulele was always reminded of Slipper because of the SUV, but Ukulele started to forget about Slipper since she got back with Bubble Wrap.
Bubble Wrap sat down in the passenger seat while Ukulele sat in the driver’s seat. Bubble Wrap smiled and blushed a little as she fixed her dress skirt, her dimples appearing, and her girlfriend giggles and kisses her cheeks.
“You’re still as cute as ever with those dimples,” Ukulele giggles as she starts the car up. The engine starts up with a satisfying growl, and Ukulele steps on the gas, and then they are off.

As she drove, she turned on the music, playing some rap songs that she had found with the help of her ex a year before, though she still liked those songs and kept them in her favorite playlist. The vehicle trembled a little bit sometimes because of the bassy parts that were playing. Bubble Wrap closed her ears, which caused Ukulele to stop her music.
“Sorry, Bubble Wrap. I guess I got a little carried away...” Ukulele said in a guilty tone.
“No, no, you’re fine! It’s okay. It’s just too loud. That’s all.”
And it seems that Bubble Wrap wasn’t that mad at all, which made Ukulele release a few tears of embarrassment, and she wipes her face with the back of her hand when they get to a red light.
“Awh, dang it! The light turned red, I just got here!” Ukulele complained, but Bubble Wrap giggled and ruffled her girl’s hair. And seconds later, the light turned green and Ukulele drove off again.
Ukulele must have been getting closer, because Bubble Wrap noticed her turn to a parking lot of a fancy restaurant. Ukulele smiled at the love of her life who was sitting next to her, and then she parked the car. She got out first, and then she took out Bubble Wrap as well, and then Bubble Wrap looked around.
“So, we’re here...?” she asked, and Ukulele nodded.
“We’re here.”
And a gush of wind overcomes them, blowing a bit of Bubble Wrap’s hair into her face. She had always loved the gushing winds that occasionally came. Then, she and her girlfriend both walk inside the glass doors of the restaurant.

When they both walked in, Ukulele went up to the front desk, Bubble Wrap following along.
“Hello, ladies!” A woman, by the name of Flashlight, spoke to them. “Would y’all like to take a seat?”
“Yes, ma’am, I’m here with my girlfriend today, because I wanted to make this day a special one for her,” Ukulele responded to the question, and so Flashlight let the two sit down somewhere.
Ukulele looked for a blank table, and soon, she found one, and gently grabbed Bubble Wrap’s hand and took her to the table. They both sat down on the mahogany chairs and got comfortable. Bubble Wrap blushed again, and she put her face in her hands.
“Are you alright there, Bubble Wrap?” Ukulele asked her, and the other nodded.
“Yeah... I never really went to somewhere this fancy before... Thank you for taking me here.”
Ukulele stroked her girlfriend’s soft hand, and the shorter one took her hands off her face, and… oh, how Ukulele struggled to not go over and kiss her lips right now. She was so cute with her red all over her cheeks, and-
“Uh, Ukulele? The waiter’s here.”
“Oh, shoot. Ah, can I-”
Ukulele then looks into the eyes of a former opponent of hers, Caramel Cube. Though she wasn’t mad. She didn’t really expect to see another one from one of the reality shows that she was in all those years back.
Caramel Cube spoke in a soft voice, “I’ll give you your menus, if you ladies don’t mind. I’ll come back after a few minutes to take your orders, but first, what would you both like to drink?”
They both said, at the same time, “Water.” And then they looked at each other for a second and giggled.
“Alrighty. So, that’s water for both of y’all. I’ll come back with your waters soon.” She smiles and then leaves. Bubble Wrap picks up her menu, and soon, Ukulele follows suit. They both sat there and looked over their menus, until Bubble Wrap piped up in happiness.
“Ohhh my goodness they got roast chicken! This is gonna be so great!” Bubble Wrap spoke, and then she started rambling about how chicken tasted so good, while Ukulele thought over the choices and opted for a salad while listening to her girl. Ukulele was on a diet, trying to limit how much meat she takes in, which would be two meat entrees a day, and she had already had her two, one during her breakfast, and one during her lunch.
And as she watched her girlfriend talk about chicken in such a happy way, her body movements mimicking the joy she felt, she couldn’t help but fall for her again, like she had the first time she saw her after a couple of years since the game ended, after she had broken up with Slipper. Ukulele loved whenever she saw Bubble Wrap get happy, she was her light, and she never wanted the shorter to get sad, and then, her stomach started to tingle a little bit, and she was feeling questions trickle in, like What if I can’t protect her from whatever she’s dealing with? What if she’s using me for her enjoyment? What if she-
The waiter was tapping Ukulele’s shoulder.
“Hey, ma’am. You... zoning out or something?”
Ukulele’s eyes widened.
“I’m sorry! I didn’t mean to-”
“You’re fine, it’s okay. Now, what did you want to order again?”
“Salad. Yeah! Salad, ahah. That’s what I... want.”
Ukulele was embarrassed again. Caramel Cube nods and then takes the menus from both, just as there was yelling across the restaurant.
“Thank you both for ordering, we will get your food. Very soon.” Her voice dripped with venom at the end, and then as she was walking, she went to the person who was yelling. She conversed with a man who had a spiky mohawk dyed in gray and a blue ripped t-shirt. Bubble Wrap was curious and looked over, but then as she saw the man, panic feared inside of her. Ukulele put her hand on top of her girlfriend’s.
“Are you okay?”
Bubble Wrap nodded slowly and took a breath.
"I... it was Chainsaw ...”
“You mean, that same guy who...?”
“Yeah... the same one who called me a baby.”
Ukulele had to keep her cool so she wouldn’t burst out yelling. And then she noticed that the waiter had given them their water, and she started drinking from hers.
Eventually, another waiter, Glass Shard, came with their food, and he sat the plates in front of each of the girls, Bubble Wrap with her roast chicken, and Ukulele with her salad.
“Would y’all like anything else? Like, any condiments or anything?”
They both shook their heads, and then, Glass Shard thanked them both and left. Bubble Wrap started to eat her chicken, and so did Ukulele, eating some of her salad. She smiled, and so did the one on the other side, and they both chuckled.
In the distance, where the event was unraveling, the manager, who Ukulele recognized as Plasma Ball, had come out, and she walked over to the customer and the waiter. Yelling could be heard from over there, and it was loud enough to reach where the two girls were.
“What the hell is your problem, Chainsaw!”
“Well, I don’t like that the baby over there is sitting with her taller companion!”
Another voice chimed in, which belonged to Slipper.
“Yeah!”
The straw that broke the camel’s back.
Ukulele stood up, halfway done with her salad, and walked over to the incident.
“You will NOT call my girl a baby!”
“Oh. I didn’t even know you went back with the baby in the first place,” Slipper said, and Chainsaw and the other person, Basketball, snickered, soon breaking out into laughter.
One second, it was laughter. The next second, Slipper was on the floor, holding her cheek, as blood trickled out of her nose. Chainsaw and Basketball both stopped laughing and they looked at Ukulele, who stood right over Slipper, just as Plasma Ball said, “GET THE HELL OUT OF MY RESTAURANT!” And it was mainly directed at the three Bracket Alliance members. Chainsaw and Basketball both had to carry Slipper out of the place, holding her robotic arms over their backs, while Plasma Ball looked at Ukulele.
“I’m going to be so real right now. I suggest you don’t do that again, but that was funny to see. I’m still gonna ban you for a month because you were a little too violent.”
Ukulele looked a bit ashamed, but at the same time, she wasn’t. She walked slowly, and then, when she felt a familiar lump form in her throat, she ran out of the doors, covering her eyes, just as tears started to fall.
Bubble Wrap was watching the entire thing, proud of her girlfriend for showing that she wasn’t playing around, but also worried about her since she ran out of the doors. Luckily, Caramel Cube came over to her, and she immediately asked that the food both be placed in takeout boxes and paid the bill for the food. As she stood up and took the takeout boxes with her, she passed by Flashlight, who said a quiet “Thank you for enjoying our food. We hope you... come again."

Bubble Wrap searched for the SUV, and there it was. But the built-in curtains were closed, and she was concerned. She went over to the vehicle and knocked on the door, and she heard a weak, trembling voice.
“G-go away.”
It was Ukulele, and it sounded like she was crying.
“It’s just me, Bubble Wrap.”
A sniffle could be heard, and then the door opened automatically. And on the bed was indeed a crying Ukulele, and Bubble Wrap’s concerns got a bit higher.
Ukulele’s face was all red and wet, and there were black lines of some of the eyeliner she put on earlier that were streaming down her face.
Bubble Wrap got into the SUV, closing the door behind her, and she sat beside her girlfriend.
“What’s the matter...?”
“I-I... I feel like... I feel l-l-like... like I r-ruined the whole th-thing...”
“But you didn’t... You didn’t ruin anything at all...”
Bubble Wrap gently wrapped her arms around Ukulele, which made her sob loudly as she clung to the shorter one who sat there and comforted her. She whispered some sweet words to her as the other one continued to cry. And her cries only got worse when her girl started rocking her.
“I... I’m s-sorry... I’m so sorry... pleaseimsosorry...”
Bubble Wrap puts a finger over Ukulele’s lips, gently shushing her.
“You didn’t do anything... it’s okay...”
Bubble Wrap then gently kissed Ukulele’s cheeks and then her forehead and eventually her lips. They both share that kiss for a little bit, and then they pull away for a second, only to press their lips against each other again. They keep kissing each other for a while, and Bubble Wrap decided to do something she normally wouldn’t do: she started kissing her girl's neck, which got a soft giggle out of the taller. Bubble Wrap then felt a warmth in her chest, and that's when she noticed what she was doing and blushed once more, pulling away from Ukulele's neck. They both look into each other’s eyes, and they smile stupidly, leaning in and kissing again.
"I love you..." Ukulele whispered.
"I love you, too..."
Bubble Wrap then pulls out the remainders of their dinner in takeout boxes, handing Ukulele hers.
“Wait, you got my food..?”
“Yeah, why wouldn’t I, Ukulele?”
They both opened their boxes and noticed that they got the wrong food, and they both laughed as they switched boxes. Bubble Wrap noticed that Ukulele was feeling a bit better.
“Can I tell you something…?”
“Sure, what is it, Bubble Wrap? Did you enjoy the date here...? Like, was it bad or anything-”
“It was good! As a matter of fact, this was the best date ever!” Bubble Wrap hugs Ukulele, with the latter returning the embrace. Ukulele had finished the rest of her food, and so did her girl before they both were serene and enjoying the embrace. Ukulele put the boxes in the little trash can, and she went back to hugging her shorter girlfriend. They stayed like that for a while, and Ukulele started stroking Bubble Wrap’s hair, her fingers sliding through her dark waves, and she also started kissing her forehead. Bubble Wrap giggled softly as she felt Ukulele kiss her cheeks again, and then the tip of her nose, which made her laugh a little bit. And then she kissed her lips, the other returning the favor, and they stayed like that for a bit, their arms wrapped around each other and their lips slowly moving, before they pulled away.
“Are you ready to go back home…?” Ukulele asked, and Bubble Wrap nodded.

When Bubble Wrap was back home, Ukulele asked her if she could spend the night with her, to which the shorter one nodded.
They both got into the house after some time in the car and got comfy, with Bubble Wrap in her favorite white pajamas with blue spots all over them, and Ukulele wearing a pair of yellow pajama pants and a white tank top. Both of their makeup was washed off them, though they were still as cute as ever. They were both in Bubble Wrap’s room, and they were laying on her bed, cuddling and embracing each other and exchanging the occasional kiss on the lips. Ukulele gently squishes and strokes Bubble Wrap’s chubby sides, which made her smile and giggle a little bit, which warmed Ukulele’s heart up, falling for her girl again, and she gets hugged by Bubble Wrap once more as Ukulele starts to rub the shorter’s back.
“I love you, Ukulele. So much…”
“I love you more.”
“Nuh-uh, I love you more.”
“No, I love you more…”
They both giggled and kissed again, clinging to each other and keeping their lips pressed and after a few, they pulled away. Eventually, tiredness started to overcome them, and they both closed their eyes, with Bubble Wrap pulling the covers over them, and they dozed off.
