This is not what Jack thought his first proper kiss with Samantha Carter would be like. He didn’t know what he thought, but what he definitely didn’t think was that she would be laughing. Well, giggling really. And damn was it adorable.
“I’m sorry,” she said through a breathy giggle, her forehead leaning against his.
“I thought we agreed, no giggling?” he asked, memories of Antarctica popping into his head, but couldn’t help the smile that tugged at his lips. Her smile was damn infectious.
Her smile widened, if that was even possible. “I know, I know.”
They were standing in the middle of his room at the cabin, the rug wrinkling beneath their socked feet. One of Jack’s hands was on her waist, and the other was wrapped around her hand, their arms hanging down to their sides. And for some reason, Sam could not stop giggling.
“I don’t know what it is,” she looked up at his eyes through her eyelashes, her blue eyes bubbling with laughter that she was so desperately trying to keep in.
“Want to try again?” He asked, threading their fingers together.
“Yes.” Sam confirmed with a firm voice.
She did, she really did. But she was having such problems with keeping in her laugh. She had no idea what it was, but kissing Jack O’Neill was turning into one of the hardest things she’s ever had to do.
Maybe it's because of all those years they couldn’t be together, and kept their feelings to themselves, most of the time anyway. And now, they were standing face to face, forehead to forehead, actually trying to do something—anything about it. In reality it was actually quite funny. It seemed too good to be true. But she’d checked already, this wasn’t some kind of mind manipulation by alien technology, she wasn’t dreaming, she wasn’t hallucinating, no, this was real.
But every time she tried to kiss him, she giggled instead.
She was determined to get at least one kiss in before she burst out in laughter. Though she couldn't contain her smile, she wouldn’t, she was very much too happy to be here, in the moment.
Leaning in again, she gave him the smallest kiss on the lips ever before her smile got so big and the giggles started again. When this girl giggled, she giggled.
“Why is this so funny to you?” Jack asked, his voice filled with her infectious laughter.
She reached her free hand up to cup his face, with a slight shake from her laughter, “I have no idea. Just, all this time we haven’t been able to do anything, and now that we finally can it doesn’t seem real.”
“Sam,” he started, looking her straight in the eyes.
“Yeah?”
“I love you.”
Well, that wasn’t helping the smile.
“I love you too.”
He gave her a smile that she’d never seen before, and managed to get a proper kiss in.
As he pulled back her eyes widened. “Hey! We did it!”
He smiled at her, “Do you think we could do it again? Or are you just going to start giggling uncontrollably?”
“The giggling, I’m afraid.” She demonstrated accidentally with another breathy giggle, that to control, she bit her lip.
“It's a good job that making you laugh is one of my life goals.” He pulled his hand free of hers, moved his head so his lips were level with her forehead, gave her a kiss, then pulled her into a hug.
Her hands wrapped around his waist, and her chin rested on his shoulder. She felt him bury his face in the crook of her neck and she sighed out a happy, contented sigh. With a slight shakiness to it from her uncontrollable giggles.
“I guess we’ll just have to try again tomorrow.” She felt his breath hit her neck as he spoke into it.
“What a shame,” she countered, and wrapped her arms tighter around him.
They’d get there, really, they would. Just maybe not now. But hey, they’ve waited this long, what’s another day?
Though the night hadn’t been a complete fail, as a little while later they pondered into the living room to find Teal’c making a fire, and Daniel grabbing beers from the fridge.
They’d joined them, snuggled under a blanket with beers while talking. And it was the happiest Sam had felt in a long time.
If she had known fishing trips would be like this, she would have taken Jack up on the offer years ago. But she had no regrets, except for her uncontrollable giggling, she kind of wished she hadn't gotten the giggles. Makes for a great story someday though, and makes a hell of a good memory.
She was where she needed to be. And it just so happened that that was snuggled into Jack’s side with her arm around his torso, while he kept her close with an arm around her shoulder. Yeah, she wouldn’t be moving for a while.
