Work Text:

"Why Ahsoka? WHY?!"
"Because I can. Because you fell for it." she laughed with glee.
"Why kill your own men?!"
"I just told you. Because you're inferior."

Rex let out a growl at his commander. His head was in a daze, conflicting thoughts fighting for control of his body as the perpetual darkness of Umbara consumed his mind.

"What about us? Were you really my best friend, or was it all a lie?"
"This?" she said, dropping her clothes in front of all of them, much to everyone's surprise. "You're not good enough for me. Never have been."

Rex couldn't hold it in much longer, so he walked out of the room to cool down. Just as the door closed, he heard his men letting out grunts and choking sounds. He ran back in, only to be impaled on Ahsoka's red blade.

"NOOO!!!" he shouted as he jerked up from his sleep. "Ahsoka!"

His commander walked in the room a minute later, woken up from his screaming.

"Rex? Are you okay? What happened?" she asked, voice soothing his destroyed mind and placed her hands on his shoulders.

All he could do was look at her, hand reaching for where his pistol should have been.

"Rex, what happened? You're safe. I'm right here. I won't let anything hurt you." she said again, looking into his eyes and rubbing her hand down the side of his face to calm him.

He stared blankly at her face for what felt like an eternity.

"You... You tried to... You did... You killed me... Umbara..." he finally managed to choke out as the tears fell down his face.
"Rex, you're my best friend. You know I would never hurt you. I would die to keep you safe." she softly said, pulling him into a hug.
"I know. I know. I'm sorry."
"Don't be sorry. Just rest. The nightmares are finally over." she whispered before going to lay on the couch in his room. "I won't leave you Rex. They'll have to kill me first."
"Some things never change." he chuckled.

Even after all these years, now here on the Ghost, nothing had changed between them. He would always be her Captain, and she'd always be his Commander.
